Off Grid Cabin Tour - Caravan to Cabin Renovation UK

This is the full cabin tour since it's been 'completed'. When I say completed, it will always be an ongoing project and never really finished. I talk about every part of the cabin and reasons for doing certain things. You can see the floor plan and shots of every part of the cabin.
For those who are watching for the first time, this was originally a static caravan in a state of disrepair. We took it on with no experience whatsoever with the idea of turning it into a 'faux log cabin'. We made so many mistakes but ultimately really happy with the way it turned out. It's rough and ready but functional.
There are lots of other videos on the channel that show the build/renovation process. Thanks for watching!

Watched the entire renovation vid. Top work !! Also have started the 'land loopholes' vid ..... How on earth does UK Govt get away with making it SOOOoo difficult (and expensive) to build on OWN LAND !!! Completely unacceptable. Thanks for all the info. Please say whereabouts in UK you are located ..... ie which county. Appreciate. 🎉

The small area that is for the clothes horse that you don't use would be a great place for a spice rack/pantry space. A front that looks like a cabinet door that actually pulls out with several small shelves that hold spices and a couple of bigger shelves for other ingredients. You just need some heavy duty drawer slides and some more math!

Yes someone just said use a curtain to cover up some of your areas like you see in French kitchen or there cottages with nice gingham or check type and it looks really nice rather than doors and it’s easy to do plus you can always change with another material to give it another look but I really like the way you have changed it big thumbs up so stay safe and peace and love from us up here in Scotland 👍🥃❤️

HI, you can build a static 22 feet wide by 65 feet long, this is the outside measurements, internal ceiling height is 10ft 3inches, outside roof height the Goverment forgot to put in a restriction. Biggest problem is getting lawful use/ council tax . I did this a few years ago in Sussex totally off grid now. good luck for the future

I have a 19 by 8 shepard hut, at moment lining out with insulation, and tounge and Grove panels, the ceiling is done with the curve roof and clear varnished as will be the finish on the walls, I have a wood burner ready but not done the cut through wall. Like your self it's learning curve every thing with the jobs and when you watch good videos gives inspiration to forget the huge prices it cost in building since the covid, for you do you think it be a heat in summer months in your build as to any problems. Itesten temperatures regular last summer one reaching 89f with windows open, curved metal roof dispite insulation is my factor, solar fans helps a little, be interested your views with your selves.

  • @offgridpath

That sounds great and a lovely project! With regards to temperatures I've never had an issue with the cabin/caravan. The summer does get hot in there but I just have the windows open for airflow. Similarly in the depths of winter, when the wood stove is on I have to have the windows open otherwise it gets too hot. That is more down to the fact that the burner is really big for the space it is heating and not so much down to the insulation. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment

Have you thought about in the kitchen, adding glides and making a slide out area so it will be easier to get to this things in the back instead of having mostly wasted space. I do know you can purchase storage racks with there on glides that go in your cabinets. I have them in my kitchen and I really love them. We added them when we had to replace our kitchen cabinets on a very tight budget and I really hated the cabinets before hand because any big pots or anything in the very back you pull out couple times a year and clean them up cause they’re just too deep to reach it But adding the pull out drawers made a big difference. Just a thought!

Looks great mate. Is it a law that it has to have wheels on it. Could you just build something that size out of timber with concrete pads if you own the land it’s on. ?

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The UK is a nightmare for planning so you have to jump through some hoops and even then there's no guarantee of legally being able to live on the land legally.

Great work! Mind sharing what and how much insulation you have for floor/walls/ceiling? I saw rockwool, but would love to know how much is there🤔 And what’s the lowest temperature you’ve had while living there?

Thanks a lot! That's a great question and unfortunately i'm not going to be able to answer it effectively. I can tell you that I bought about 15 rolls on insulation but i couldn't tell you how much was in a roll. It was eco rock wool from B&Q - we did have probably a couple of rolls left over. There were only two sections of the floor that we replaced but other than that left the original insulation in there which is very thin. We put insulation everywhere else in the cabin, in the roof, walls and even in the internal walls which wasn't necessary but we had it so just used it up in those internal walls. The lowest temperature was probably about -2 or -5C maximum in the night in the winter. The burner is our only source of heat and even in the winter we have to have the windows open because it gets so hot in there so it holds up really well in the winter.

lovely job! were curious to know how you got round planning and fire regs because we looked into retro fitting a caravan quite recently and things like changing doors, taking down walls , removing fire doors, and increasing ceiling height and taking out the ugly fireproof ceiling panels, were not permitted under fire safety regs .. Did we miss something ?

dont think firedoors and fireproof ceiling panels were a thing in this static in the first place.

In the first full conversion video they removed the suspended ceiling , internal walls and doors , which presumable were fire doors and ceiling. The issue we found was that permission was granted , providing that it could still be moved ( ie was temporary structure ) and that we didn’t make modifications that breached fire regs - which meant certain modifications weren’t allowed( like opening up the kitchen) So would be great to hear from them how they got around this stuff in order that we can try the same methods.

That's a very good point. Truth be told we have just done it and it probably wouldn't pass (probably shouldn't be saying that!) It's a risk but so far so good! Really glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!

Temporary buildings don't require building or fire regs. Something on wheels, skids or cabins don't come under that regulation umbrella. They are part of the caravan act, and that attracts completely different rules. They wouldn't have been fire doors in the original static building.

Very good question. I purposely put the oven right in front of the window so it could draw out as much as possible without and extractor fan.

No curtain/blinds to keep the heat in during the winter months?

  • @offgridpath

That's a good question. To be honest we had planned to put some up but because of the size of the burner compared to the size of the cabin it gets unbelievably hot so we actually have windows open if there burner is on in the winter. Curtains would be good but I guess we've just got used to not having any for some reason!

it cost about £9k but that was during covid and managed to get in there before the wood prices went crazy. I imagine it would cost a fair bit more now
