OFF GRID and EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS REFRIGERATION How We Handle The Task

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this episode, I'm showing various food storage techniques and how mother nature offers us free refrigeration for 5 to 6 months of the year. We also use a propane powered refrigerator in the summer months as well as a Unique Brand gas freezer for making ice and long term food storage. I'm making this video by request of those who are interested in living off the grid but this information can come in handy during major power outages and SHTF emergency situations.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:
Video of Gas Refrigerator:
Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

With solar, a lot of ppl make the mistake of installing panels on the roof and they have died from falling while clearing snow in the winter! My panels are over 6 feet long and 4 feet off the ground & keep the snow cleared under them. Winter configuration is facing South and completely vertical so snow does not collect on them & they always charge with a minimum of maintenance. Just food for though for a future electric freezer! Thx for sharing JC!

Boss, I have to admit I was so impressed with your ice box idea in your upstate NY cabin that I went and built one in my workshop, just for power outages and/or SHTF emergencies. I remember back in the 70's at my Dad's NH cabin, we used an antique ice box whenever we were staying there. Beautiful piece of craftsmanship but like you said, not really great at keeping groceries chilled in the summer months. Dad always kept the beer in a separate metal Coleman cooler. Priorities!

    AMEN = my grandmother lived in a tiny 'railroad' apartment (means one room width all the way through) raising 8 children in the 1920s and 30s, using an 'ice box' = which was kept propped outside of the kitchen window, three floors above ground level !!! Boy, are we spoiled! She had one tiny bathroom with only one toilet in it, sink was in the kitchen, as was a large tub for washing laundry and humans! she never owned a car and delivered all her eight babies at home in the tenement building that was heated by coal in an old cast iron cook stove !!! AND to make matters worse this was in the middle of NYC !!! She NEVER complained / that I ever heard! SO = enjoy your 'conveniences' and quit complaining ! =}

They was far less power loss then from using regular refrigerators! Great video Boss . I remember that outdoor cooler when you built it at the New York Cabin . The problem with a propane fridge and freezer is that you have to vent it . Unique do sell a 12 volt fridge . MBF have one and they love it . No need for an outside vent . Doesn't take much power to run it and you don't need a gigantic solar power set up to run it . It's also good for people who have a cabin and visit it on the weekends . Fridge is always cold and it's free power . Another good reason not to build so close to the ground . A higher building allows you to store items underneath . If you wanted to keep a cooler stay colder longer than people should do what you did and line the inside with bubble foil . That was in another of your videos . Many homes in my area have a cold room built in under the front porch . Problem is if that porch is facing South it doesn't get that cold . Mine faces North and I put all kinds of things in there .Take care .

Hey Boss, look at "tech ingredients" here on you-tube he has a diy solid state fridge that may work well in your quest for as close to free as you can get! He also has an solar air conditioning system that absolutely blew my mind! simplicity yes, maintenance for sure but as you know, everything has some cost or another! We are still looking to be in it at some point and just gathering all we can to help us when we do take the plunge. Larry, from Lynn and Larry pardey sailing built a cooler for their SV Seraffyn and he sandwiched a foil in between the layers and supposedly worked extraordinarily well. Sandwiching the insulation that you've used plus Styrofoam will probably work really well! Years back I worked a wood working shop in Rensselaer county NY and the boss never wanted to pay to have sawdust collected, so we piled it out back of the shop (yes it was a wooded area) very much to my surprise the middle of August hot as hell you could go out back to dump saw dust and be crunching on last winters snow under the saw dust! the oldest snow I found was 2 years old. I know you cut and work plenty of wood up there and with all the saw dust you maybe be able to utilize some of it. As Always, Our Best and stay warm! Paul & Lisa

My great grandparents had the best life according to them they had two nannies for milk cheese butter keeping it cool? They kept their stuff in the river till they got a steel insulated icebox where they got dry ice every time they went to town where grandma sold her cheese butter and eggs in winter that icebox stayed cold without dry ice during the Great Depression great grandpa and my granddad raised chicken rabbits goats they always had meat and a garden which great grandma canned everything they had harsh times but those times weren’t as harsh as other had it more because those who didn’t grow and raise a meat source suffered. I love what your showing people it’s good to have options

Sorry, when you showed the door to the outdoors inside your icebox all I could imagine was a bear or racoon raiding it. Has a critter ever gotten into your icebox? God forbid a rat. Not meaning to be negative, it just popped into my mind. I do appreciate this video. I'm a nomad travelling in a truck camper. One summer my fridge failed and I used ice very effectively inside the fridge to keep the food from spoiling until the fridge was replaced. Had to replenish it about every 3 to 4 days and focused on not opening the door unless absolutely necessary. Great video. Thanks again and hope I didn't insult you about the critters. Just subbed. Nice channel. We'll be binging. We quickly tired of the excess LP gas usage in winter. Our place is so small that our wood stove caused the frig to run constantly. Especially when we were cooking. And so I cut a hole in an outside wall of our kitchen. I then mounted a small (broken down) apartment sized frig outside the hole. Using a hole saw, I cut a 2" hole in the outside rear of the unit and another on the door front. I put a tiny 12v fan over each hole and connected them to separate thermostatic switches. The door fan turns on drawing air through the outside hole when the frig gets too warm. The back fan kicks on to pull air through the front hole when the temp gets too cold. There are a couple of things that I'd do differently (like flappers on each hole and full sized frig) but for the most part, its pretty darn sweet.

Spring room I had a lady that had a spring room in the milk house they tapped into an artesian well and they keep the water running to the house and the water dishes for the cows and ran it out to an outdoor trough. They had it circulating around an Old bulk tank that they could store milk or produce in. It kept the whole milkhouse cool. Kept it above freezing in the winter as well.

Good ol' Yankee ingenuity! Love it : D The last storm we had with high winds had me thinking I may need to get a few chunks of ice outside because we lost the power. It came back on before too long, so I didn't have to improvise. I never panic over lost electricity because I always have alternatives (YI ;) Thinking spring lately & watching some great tips on vertical gardening (little space to work with). Nice to see Tildy... puppies at some point? Enjoy that swivel & God bless.
