True story. First time I heard this song I was working at a goodwill store. I wrote down "we're torn torn torn apart" quickly so I could look up this song after work. I got the meaning the first time I heard it (my moms a widow, the vibes are obvious and sad) and had to hear it again. Here I am several years later still loving this song.

I remember I was 17 once this song was released and for me it used to represent an inner conflict within everybody’s head and the questions we ask ourselves to understand life. After I lost my brother this song represents a conversation between me and him. “Just let me go we’ll meet again soon” Rest in peace Hadi

For those who like to sing along: “I don't like walking around this old and empty house So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear The stairs creak as you sleep It's keeping me awake It's the house telling you to close your eyes And some days I can't even dress myself It's killing me to see you this way 'Cause though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore There's an old voice in my head That's holding me back Well, tell her that I miss our little talks Soon it will be over and buried with our past We used to play outside when we were young And full of life and full of love Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear 'Cause though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore Don't listen to a word I say (Hey) The screams all sound the same (Hey) And though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore You're gone, gone, gone away I watched you disappear All that's left is a ghost of you Now we're torn, torn, torn apart There's nothing we can do Just let me go, we'll meet again soon Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around I'll see you when I fall asleep Don't listen to a word I say (Hey) The screams all sound the same (Hey) Though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore Don't listen to a word I say (Hey) The screams all sound the same (Hey) Though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore Though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore Though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore”

This song was pretty popular back then... at my night job, they played the radio, and this song came on twice in a row -- which is actually pretty annoying when they play the radio at work (you're so tired of hearing every song 5+ times per day). Twice in a row is ridiculous. At my current job, somebody keeps playing a Modest Mouse song on a bluetooth speaker. Even if I unplug it, they come and turn it back on again. It's like they want to be really sure that I hear their music every day, even though they have their own speaker in their own office, to listen to it. And they play the same playlist EVERY DAMN DAY. It's driving me nuts. I don't even like this kind of music... I listen to old jazz. It's like they're trying to torture me with Shitmusic.

It's only now that I realized how meaningful is this song. If I didn't misunderstand, this song is about an old widow complaining to her husband's soul and wanna suicide so that she can meet her husband. She said she hates the empty house which made her felt lonely. She felt sad that she can't even dress and didn't know whether she was correct or wrong. However, her husband consoled her, said that it was her brain playing tricks on her. Her husband asked her not to listen to his sound, which was telling her not to suicide. He said they would meet in her dream. So just wait for him, and live happily. Edit: Thank you so much for the likes and replies! Stay safe💖

My dad used to say that this song was written from the perspectives of pilgrims on the Mayflower. Idk where he heard that or if he came up with it himself but it's probably based on them talking about being in a ship.

coming back to this song. Used to hear it on the radio as a kid and occasionally here and there but i never really sat down, listened and read the lyrics and understood the song. Its wonderful what kind of emotions you can feel from the same song throughout your life understanding new parts and new definitions of each part every time you come back. You're Doing great i promise
