My late wife was Korean. I have been to Korea 51 times, from the 1950s to the 1970s. She passed in 1974. It was a surprise at first but you get in a taxi and he asks your age. When you don't know someone and you don't want an awkward silenced, in the West we talk about the weather. In Korea they talk about age. Not that unusual. It was always funny with my wife and me. When we met, I told her my age as the Koreans count it. She told me her age as Americans count it. For a while, we both thought I was older. She was my elder by a year.

I start thinking about the worst, don't know why 🤣 May be it happens instinctively, because on the forehead of a person it is not written whether he is good or he has a bomb with him. Honestly, I don't blame Koreans for being a little surprised every time they hear a foreigner speak their language. Korean isn't commonly spoken around the world. In a reverse situation, from my own experience as a Vietnamese, the first thing some Americans told me after learning that I'd just recently moved to America was, "Wow your English is very good!" They were surprised because English isn't still commonly spoken in Vietnam. Even though there's already a huge Vietnamese-American community in USA, I still don't find that kind of reaction bothersome at all. I'm also guilty of it myself whenever I encounter a foreigner who can speak Vietnamese fluently, which is factually a rare phenomenon.

I'm Korean and I lived my whole life in other countries outside of Korea and anywhere I go I am a foreigner too. But it's very embarrassing to see how Koreans are so racist. Korea has developed in many aspects but the minds and cultures are very close-minded. You can't really say Koreans are very well mannered or they have etiquettes either. And sometimes they think being polite it's okay to even cross that personal/privacy line.

I work at a casino/sport bar and if someone you don't know sits on a slot machine you have to go ask themselves do they need help which makes people mad because they probably know more about the thing then you who just got the job and they have been sitting on the fucking thing for years. It's because companies want to raise the quality of customer service but sometimes depending on the policy they introduce they make people mad.

That's just the thing that I don't understand. I am Korean too. Why do you need to use the sentence structures which you'd use at younger people, while you don't even know them? Why can't we use the polite form of sentences to everyone we do not know well, regardless of their age? So what I mean; please do not ask the age when you meet people, just use the polite form to everyone. That will be really fine.

And also going from one country to another in Europe makes you a foreigner by default. Looks don’t mean shit. Europeans don’t like each other, especially not Eastern Europeans.

Patting someone on the shoulder is the maximum amount of physical contact I can bare with. I don't get how people can act otherwise. Here, people will even restrain themselves from speaking to strangers without a valid reason, like no one will talk to you just because they feel like it, and sometimes people will even remain silent and look the opposite way when someone does something inappropriate. The general thought is that everyone minds their own business, so no one bothers eachother. I don't think the Russian woman said anything weird at all, if so correct me please

There'll always be some kind of racism or discrimination. Both sides have people visiting the other country and meeting the wrong people. What I mean by that is: Of course there are kind Black people in America and kind Koreans in Korea but again, those foreigners meet the wrong people and then judge them and generalize. I'm Korean-American, and I extremely don't like how Koreans discriminate by color. However, I've also experienced being generalized by all sorts of races in America. The typical, "do you eat dogs?" (Fuck no) or "Asians are horrible drivers" (They have never been in a vehicle with me / I never got a ticket and I want to keep it that way like any other sane person). Honestly, I'm just thankful I didn't hear these when I were younger, otherwise I would have been really insecure about myself. I also get complaints from my non-Korean friend about how a Korean did this or that to them or what they saw some Korean do. How am I supposed to know why they did something? They are strangers yet they connect them to me because I happen to be Korean.

    A. Since TV was invented, most of the Asian women have been influenced by western movies and cultures in which a lot of white men or women are playing the handsome character whereas, other races such as Asians or Black people play the funny character. Therefore, the perception that whiter or lighter skin makes them better looking has manifested itself in their minds which is ridiculous in my opinion. However, that's what has been happening. Hence, certain stereotypes are associated with skin color. B. Korean people are closed-minded due to the geographical difficulties to access other countries such as the US or Canada where so many people of different skin color are living together. In other words, they simply haven't had enough chances to get used to foreigners. In addition, they are not able to speak English fluently which makes them hesitate to have international experiences because they care a lot about what other people think and always want to be perfectionists. This trend has changed in the young generation and many people have already interacted with people from all over the world. However, in my opinion, to change their perception of the standard of beauty takes years. Therefore, I regret that you might have been heard ridiculous comments from Koreans and I think you should ignore that because they are not fully aware of what they are saying due to the reasons that I mentioned above. Don't cope with that, it's not simply worth it. They were not able to widen their horizon, and maybe you can try to understand their point of view.

I apologized and we got into a silent car ride. And then she asked, how old are you, what do you study etc etc. I was 17, i majored in architecture at the time. And wow, that personality change. I had the same experience as the first guy with the bag situation. It was my first day in Korea. I was waiting at the subway station with my huge luggage and a small carry on. People were crowding around me and waiting for the subway too. There was an ahjussi with his wife was behind me. The minute the doors opened, people started rushing in while squishing me in the process. Without saying a word, the ahjussi behind me quickly went in front and took the carry on from my hand.. it happened so fast, I just said "Oh!" and quickly squeezed my way behind him. Once inside, he quickly turned around, returned the carry on, bowed his head slightly and disappeared to another cart with his wife. I'll be honest, at first I thought he was going to steal my bag lol... but he was just trying to be helpful because I was stuck....or maybe he was annoyed that I was holding him up behind me lol. Hello, I'm a Korean-American expat growing up in West Africa, so I know what it's like to be the outsider, the foreigner, the black sheep. Thus, I’m not speaking from a place of ignorance in this comment. I appreciate these folks sharing their honest opinions and experiences, which are essential to progress. But I do have some problems with what they said. I sincerely understand their frustration and grievances. But complaining about people being too nice seemed like a bit much to me. About the language exchange thing. Yeah, I reckon that must be annoying. But y'all gotta know that Korea has only recently started getting foreigners. Right up until now, Korea was always extremely, extremely isolated: It didn't interact with the West until the late 1800s (and even then, contact was minimal). We had trade going on with China and sometimes Japan, but that was about it. No one cared about us and no one wanted to visit us … These things take time. I found this complaint outrageous: "how old are you?" I was surprised that the interviewees did not seem to know how essential age is to us. Korean culture is based on confucianism, in which respect must be given to our elders. In order to establish a relationship and in order to know how to address someone, age is crucial. That's why it's not rude to ask someone's age in Korea. It’s normal, I assure you. My own younger siblings don't call me by my name because that would be disrespectful. I don't know about the "keeping their age a secret" sorta thing. That's just weird. Sorry about that, interviewees. Yes, Korean culture can seem nosy to foreigners. I gotta tell y'all, it's just the way we roll and show affection. If strangers do it to you, well, it might be because you're a foreigner, so sorry in advance. In these sort of matters, we're quite blunt and straightforward and I honestly like it like this. If it really bothers you, living in Korea might not be for you. As for the "wowing" every time a foreigner even speaks one word of Korean ... I shake my head. I’m pretty sure foreigners would not prefer it if Koreans pretended they couldn't understand them or even looked down on them snootily because the French are like that (I know because I lived in France for a year). I'm telling you, when I was growing up in the States, everyone assumed I was Chinese, or at least Japanese. Korea is the most underrated East Asian country. Speaking Korean ain't like speaking Chinese or Japanese. So you can’t really blame the people that have for thousands and thousands of years lived in a homogenous society to be shocked when foreigners speak Korean. As I said before, these things take time. Please try to be more understanding. Everyone, America is the melting pot of the world: America doesn't have the same concept of "foreigner" like other countries do. Consequently, of course Koreans are going to ask you where you're from. Of course they're going to ask you how long you've been in Korea. YOU ARE A FOREIGNER. Trust me, here I am, growing up in West Africa, I've been here for 7 years, nearly half my life, and people always stare at me, want to touch my skin and my hair, express surprise if I can speak their language, etc. etc. But I can’t complain BECAUSE I AM A FOREIGNER. What else can I expect? Practically no tourists come to visit this country ... I'm one of the only "white" people in my city. So, yes, no matter how much you know, no matter what, you will ALWAYS be a foreigner. Again, Korea is a homogenous society, populated by Koreans. I'm sincerely sorry if y'all receive discrimination cuz that still ain't right. And of course there are lots of things that should be changed. I'm not denying that. As for, the club thing not allowing that black woman in. Again, my sincerest apologies. Please don’t think badly of the rest of Korea just because of a few bad experiences. There are some crazy discrimination cases in America, but that doesn’t mean America isn’t a great country! There have been some other club cases like that, but that's not just related to being black, I'll have you know. I've heard of this before and it applies to all foreigners. The reasoning was largely either because clubs wanted to regulate their customers to Koreans (sorry to say, but foreigners do have body odor) or because of foreigners causing trouble before. The latter is more common, I believe at least, and it has happened before: foreigners starting things (the higher crime rate in Itaewon is largely due to foreigners). If the club doesn’t want foreigners, many just make excuses, not saying anything outright. Yes, there is going to be discrimination everywhere. When I was in Italy, all these white people kept staring at us which was weird cuz I thought Italy would be more used to foreigners. Apparently not, I guess. But please listen: Korea is a tiny, underrated country in East Asia that has been there for thousands and thousands of years, through invasions, wars, and worse, but we’re still there. No outsiders really came (beside the missionaries) because Korea was simply unknown. So please, don’t expect anything grand like the States. We’re still getting used to foreigners. Korea ain’t America, y’all gotta know that. So please, please, please don’t complain about people being shocked to see foreigners. I wanted to write this because some elements of this interview angered me and I wanted to explain the other side. I fully understand theses interviewees, having grown up as the minority in West Africa, but some parts of this just weren’t right. Anyway, my sincerest apologies for the bad experiences these interviewees have had.

It really takes time to Korean people that world is getting more globalized and it includes South Korea so we should respect diversity and try to embrace foreigners. But as you said, it is not a common event for us to encounter foreigners in normal days so they shouldn't expect us to be all cool and okay. Especially, for the elderly. I sincerely feel sorry for you guys who have experienced unpleasant events though.

Personally I'm not impressed. I've been learning Russian, Chinese, German, and English. I don't want or expect to be congratulated for my personal effort. Why should I be impressed that someone who LIVES IN KOREA can speak some basic Korean? Makes absolutely no sense to me.

chelsea chang where are you from is a perfectly fine question to ask really. The problem is when you're born in America (for example) but your ethnicity is different than the norm and they pry you for your ethnicity once your initial answer didn't give them the answer they wanted. In some cases the follow up can be off putting depending on how they word the question. But I honestly don't see why these foreigners have problems with Koreans asking them that question. Caucasian is not the norm in Korea, much less Korean born Caucasian.

It's more than that, Korea remains a caste based society. Koreans ask all those questions in order to determine your position, relative to their own, in that caste system. Once they have determined that relationship, then they will behave toward you "appropriately" meaning they will treat you as superior, inferior, or a peer from a societal perspective, not a humanity perspective. The questions are to "size you up" so they know the proper way to behave toward you, what is acceptable, what isn't, within their cultural norms.

I'm a Vietnamese Asian American and it's sad to hear from the one asian lady that koreans aren't always accepting of people from other asian countries. Even though I'm asian it's like I'm not even accepted by my own race. It's like if you were from France but weren't accepted in Spain, or if you were from Nigeria but weren't accepted in Kenya. I have always wanted to travel to Japan or Korea in the future but my parents have always said that people there may still not be very nice to you, and I was and still am always afraid to find out if that's true. (btw i've never been to those places yet, and probably won't for a while)

If you're a foreigner in Korea, the problem is, you're a foreigner... Korea's attitude is, 'you are not one of us' (even if you speak Korean and know more about its history than they do)

As a Muslim too, wearing a hijab, I can feel the discrimination when I travelled to Korea back in 2015. I "touched" a shirt an old ahjumma was selling in Myeongdong but she shooed me away annoyedly. At that, I realised Muslims are still not accepted in Korea.
