We have had very good luck with our Odyssey Extreme batteries in our drag cars. We pull some pretty good amps with, elec.fans, water pump, fuel pump, ignition. Odyssey has never not started our cars or caused any electrical issues. Top quality, American made product!

Optima was owned by Bertil Gylling and he retired in 99. A year later Johnson Controls and Gylling sat down for some dealings and the company was sold. Optima is fully owned by Johnson Controls the largest battery manufacturer in the world. They practically make every battery seating on a shelf rn, no matter the brand. Quality control is not there biggest concern, I’d say profit margins are a slightly more imperative.

Too bad Optima moved manufacturing to Mexico and has subsequently seen a huge decline in their quality. They used to be an awesome battery. Looks like Odyssey has them beat hands down and as a plus, they’re made in the USA.

When Optima first came out they were groundbreaking and amazing in the car audio world. Then at some point (after they built up their name to an industry standard) they sold out to some other company and that's when their quality took a nose dive. I don't remember exactly when that happened, but i think in the late 90's to early 2000's

Yeah now made in Mexico. That says it all. I been running the same Yellow top Optima in my 2000 Z/24 supercharged Cavalier. Battery was built in December 2005 and I bought it in January 2006. Here it is September 2021 and still in my car. Many years later I bought another yellow top for my 2011 Civic. 2 years to the month. Also my 1982 DeLorean red top dead 1 year after I put it in. I now run Odyssey in my Civic and DeLorean with ZERO issues

All true. Not virgin lead anymore, the whole manufacturing process changed (for the worse) when it moved to Mexico. I still have a yellow top in my DeLorean that is almost 3 years old, no problems yet, but when I do I will replace with an Odyssey battery.

Alternators only charge a car battery to about 80%. To properly maintain an AGM battery you must periodically give them a sympathetic FULL charge every one to two months. Then they will last many years. Otherwise they will step down and degrade.

I know Clarios is supposed tl be Johnson Controls. But I've sold many many Optima's in the 5 years Ive been dealing parts. The Optima's that were labeled Johnson Controls held up much much better then the ones we now sell with the Clarios lable. Im not sure why. I do think the quality control has gone down a lot. They just charge a lot for the brand recognition. I love how Odyssey has a lot more true OEM group sizes. Im going with an Odyssey for my Mustang. They are the only company i know that makes a 94r AGM.

I am not sure what failed. We purchased one from Auto Zone, when we noticed an issue with charging we took it in to be diagnosed and the result was the battery needed to be replaced. Charge would be lost quickly at the end of live. Alternator was checked as well, no issues. If you are passed two years you might just have it checked out to be sure, those checks are free at Auto Zone and Advanced Auto if you have either one of those locations. Thanks for your question.

I have a Napa Legend acid lead battery that came with my Lexus es300. Im running Alpine 600 watt amp. Doesn't dim headlights or anything. Would it really help save on how long it takes battery to charge? Im planning on buying one but don't want to throw away money as the battery is only 2 years old. I was thinking when the battery gets atleast 3 years old I'll make the upgrade. I don't really drive much maybe 3000 miles per year but it gets driven atleast 5 days per week

Had a a similar issue with a YellowTop. The ones back before they moved shop to Mexico were seller batteries. The Johnson Controls bought them up and moved shop, and now the Yellow Tops won't last 2 years. I bought 2 more Yellow tops just to give it the benefit of the doubt, and the second one had me almost screwed me. Imagine being off road (over 1 hour away from anything), and your battery start no longer holding a charge, with the alternator acting as life support, then trying to limp back into town hoping you don't hit idle speeds. Yeah screw Optima these days. I got myself an Odyssey (34/78 PC1500) and that thing is considering all the electronics I have in my truck. Doesn't even flinch.

I went through several Optima Yellow Tops in recent years - they lose charge fast and have to replace them every 1 or 2 years. I am reading their manufacturing sucks after they moved to Mexico. I used to have great results with the original Yellow Top of the early 2000s. I’ll try Odessey Extreme.

Just to add my experience so far with the Yellow Top Optima. My LS swap Miata has been through 3 replacements in the almost 3 years I bought it. So that makes it the 4th battery now. It would go dead just sitting in the garage a few days for no reason. The most recent one is giving me fits. I would check for parasitic draw on all interior circuits since I have a small 400w Alpine amp (55wx4) and Pioneer stereo. It would be rock solid for two days but the third day it would start dropping my battery tender (NOCO Genius 10) that can handle AGM batteries. So two days of maintenance green light trickle top off but third day out of the blue it would drop to 50% charge for no reason. I would disconnect a terminal (didnt matter which one). Then charge it direct and in 30 seconds it would just suddenly go from 50% to full charge. I would check all circuits again to make sure nothing was pulling current and it would be silent. The prior replacements were due to a bad cell that developed. Planning on going the Odyssey route but need to research battery box sizes as I have to replace a D51R size battery so options are tight unless I pull out plastic panels in the trunk.

Bought a Optima in 2014 it just went out today 2022. However, I bought 2 for my duramax, 1 for my tahoe and 2 for camping. All 5 went bad in under 2 years. Even my camping ones that were left with a battery tender on them. I will NEVER buy an Optima again they are absolute trash after Johnson Control bought them out. Not only do they die quick I lost count how many times I had to jump start my vehicles in the cold weather. I honestly feel like I got scammed.

As I was researching info on the differences between the Optima ('Six Pack') AGM batteries and the Odyssey Performance and Extreme AGM batteries (as well as the WMart 'Everstart' I currently am looking to replace). I found that Scotty Kilmer had made a video about the Optima batteries and their history and why he will not be buying them anymore and why he 'recommends' (warns) others not to either. Here's the link: 'Never Buy This Battery' [ kzread.info/dash/bejne/mn-jl8uDYtWuZ9I.html ]

I went with Odyessy, they are FAR superior. More ah, tougher, actually rugged under heavy abuse, fast recharge and same price or cheaper even. Pretty obvious the choice, but marketing is deceitful and tactful, and people continue to buy them. You're wasting your $ folks, look at the high power car audio world. We put batteries to the ultimate test. We pull wayyyy more current then any application in any industry. The most abusive situations thought of, and we all use Northstar, Odyessy and lithium. Only way to keep voltage up under extreme loads, along with longevity.

I just ordered an Odyssey to replace my yellow top in my Mazda 3. Bought the 3 in 2008, and put the yellow top in it either then, or early 2009, and its been there ever since, no issues. Been completely discharged numerous times as I haven't driven it much the last seven years as I have a company vehicle for my job, and I think it's finally given up the ghost. Prior to that, I put a yellow top in my 1994 Miata after getting sick of the horrible stock battery after a few years. My first yellow top turned out bad, and was replaced under warranty, and the new one was just fine, probably lasted me 13-15 years, and was also discharged numerous times, as the Miata was stored winters, and sometimes, it just sat a bit too long. Both yellow tops bought after the sale to Johnson Controls, and also after production moved to Mexico, I think, so I guess it's just hit or miss with them now. The reason I decided to try the Odyssey. That, and it was a few bucks cheaper than a new yellow top.
