Odin Suite | God of War: Ragnarök (Original Soundtrack) by Bear McCreary

Музыка

The mastermind behind the scenes, Odin's presence and power brings with it a threat more terrifying and cataclysmic than Ragnorök itself. I haven't played the game yet, but I was spoiled on the first boss of the game and the cutscene preceding it. I'm unsure about who to designate the suite too, but for now I'll classify this as the Odin and Thor suite. It could easily change to just being Odin however, since Thor does seem to act as an extension of his might and power. Anyways, Odin's theme had a tough precedent to outdo, with the magnificent theme for Baldur, but McCreary delivered a fantastic theme for the All-Father. A menacing four note pattern underlies and precedes the Æsir's theme, low and guttural. Rushing, monotonous strings burrow and fester, adding to the calculative and plotting nature of the character. His motif itself is threatening and foreboding, performed with a male choir or on brass. But with it lies a sense of not only regality and status, but also yearning and tragedy. Perhaps his fate is sealed with Ragnorök, or maybe he yearns for things beyond his reach; an escape from the fated end, or knowledge itself. But even still, his theme festers and becomes rife with his malicious intent, blowing into grand thematic statements on full brass. Thor's variations differ slightly, with more of a focus on guttural, male vocalizations of not only the four note backing pattern, but also the motif, which differs from Odin's variations by having a less extravagant ending phrase and instead a more consistent and simple ending to the melody. I'd argue Bear outdid himself, for he outdid Baldur's theme by not trying to outpace its energy and relentless nature, but showcasing what makes Odin the threat he is; by focusing on his might, power, and grandeur as the king of the Æsir, and creating a theme deserving of the All-Father.

As despicable as Odin's treatment of others and his duplicitous nature may be, I love how they portrayed his thirst for knowledge. It is almost as if he is a slave to knowledge, to the point of betraying and hurting everything and everyone around him, including himself, just to dig deeper down the well of knowledge. He couldn't stop digging even if he tried, unable to overcome his nature.

The 'villains' aren't just some moustache-twirling evil-for-evil's-sake assholes, they have complexity. Baldur had mommy issues, Thor had daddy issues and the way they portrayed him like a recovering alcoholic with a toxic relationship with his dad pleasantly surprised me. Everyone felt like a genuine person, unlike the original GoW where both the heroes and the villains were comic book characters. The cool thing about how Odin enters the house, I think, is how, partly, he's already playing up the kindly old grandfather routine ("Little chilly out here, isn't it, sonny? Y'wouldn't mind letting a tired, travel-worn old man, warm his aching bones, would you? (...) Oh! A chair for me? And I see you've set out a couple of pitchers of mead! You shouldn't have!"), while simultaneously, like you said, obnoxiously crashing into Kratos and Atreus' house, like he owns the place (which, in his opinion, he does, or he will, in time, anyway). LOL, speaking of grandfathers, thought, I always thought Richard Schiff/Odin had quite a notable resemblance to my great-grandad Lennie (we're both from West Yorkshire, but he was actually at least half Norwegian (or some other type of Scandinavian), half German). Apart from the eyes being a little different, he was also thinning. It got me thinking though, imagine being able to say that your grandad was actually Odin. That'd be ace... Well, until, based off how much of a tosspot he is in GOW (and, to some degree, the myths), you realise how awful a person he actually is.

"You know who I am?" Having played gow 2018 like 6-7 times and having heard of all the Terrors he has inflicted across the nine realms that line really makes your heart drop to the ground. *That's him.* The Man that killed the being to birth all beings. The Man that slaughtered an entire race just because they were *said* to be the ones to kill him. The Man that hung himself from the branches of the universe itself just to gain knowledge. The Man that is described as wanting to "control every Land, in every realm, in every World if he could". The Man that enslaved an entire World and turned their realm into a factory. The Man that tricked a young woman into killing her own father just because she wouldn't become his wife. The Man that imprisoned 2 puppys in the depths of his palace to stop them from starting day and night. The Man that has any living being of any realm that *might* ever pose a threat to him murdered. The Man that sends men to hell for dying of old age. The Man that forces warriors who died in battle to fight for him for eternity, erasing their memories of their loved ones and everything they lived for. The Man that besieges an entire World because his former wife, queen of said World, wouldn't take part in genocide. The man that gave said wife a pet-name just to not give a "lesser being" any credit. The Man that betrayed said wife just to be able to study her magic and bewitch her with it to never be able to defend herself or others, imprisoning her so she may never see or help her people again. The Man that invited beings he saw as below him to his palace just to laugh at them and have them slaughtered by his son in the end. The Man that had the stone mason who built the great walls of his kingdom crushed just because he lost a bet against him. The Man that corrupted hundreds of innocent ravens to be his trackers, taking their souls and bodies from them. The Man that chained an innocent creature for the rest of it's life, for lamp-oil. The Man that sent his only grandsons to a fight they were destined to lose, not caring about their deaths and calling them "useless". The Man that sets up his only granddaughter and only grandchild left to suffer the same fate as her brothers. The Man that forced his son to beat his own youngest, only son left to death, trying to make him and his daughter-in-law forget by drowning them in alcohol. The Man that turned his firstborn into a personal mindless killing machine. The Man that degraded his secondborn into his personal lapdog by giving him hopes of a normal life. The Man that had mankind live outside the walls of his kingdom, aware that they will be killed doing so. The Man that ensured a war to last for over 200 winters, turning the whole realm into an infinite meatgrinder. The Man that fused his personal advisor with a tree, torturing him day by day. The man that forced an entire race to leave their bodies just so they wouldn't be wiped off the universe. The Man that killed his own son. The Man who's death is said to start a new age of peace. The God that stole the light of Alfheim. The God that stole the fire of Muspelheim. The God that stole the ice of Niflheim. The God that stole the magic of Vanaheim. The God that stole the prophecies of Jotunheim. The God that stole the resources of Svartalfheim. The God that stole the life of Helheim. The God that stole the humans of Midgard. In a way you can find another parallel between them. Tyr wasn't the only god of war, technically Odin and Thor were, too. Instead of making him a textbook big strong bad guy like they did with Zeus they instead made him a master manipulator who rarely has to use physical force to get what he wants. Except it's not at all. It's the culmination of 2 games, being 2018 and this one. The original god of war trilogy was effectively it's own build up to endgame except with much more murder and much less cooperation. Starting 3 on Gaia then ending with taking out the king of Olympus, it was very climactic in and of itself. With odin, it's only 1 game of buildup (where it was all just stories of him) then a game of escalating action building to the big daddy all fucker himself. Don't get me wrong, i loved it all but to imply the events of the greek saga has any ties to facing odin at ragnarok, well that's a bit of a stretch

He uses his deceits, tricks and even put his family in dangers to confront Kratos and convince Atreus to find the pieces of the Mask. A cunning coward which will sacrifice everything for his obsession of the truth of creation, life, death and everything which lies beyond His Kingdom(Nine Realms). Odin, the All-Father, King of the Aesir and the Wiseman of Lies.

just finished the main story and I love how Odin is portrayed in this game. while I never got a chance to play the Greek saga, I like how Odin is not physically intimidating as Zeus but What makes him scary is his thirst for knowledge and how he manipulates others to do his bidding. It's like a brain vs brawn type of thing that I like. either way I LOVED this game!

Also how Odin actually CRAVES something. He is obsessed. Zeus was obsessed too, but he craved nothing. He was at the peak, literally, peak of Olympus, all he wanted was for things to stay this way and so he treated Kratos as a rabid dog, too mad to be tolerated in his perfect world order. Odin on the other hand? He seems to actually "level" with Kratos. He sees Kratos as a genuine threat and also hates him low key... So that makes Odin that much more "engaged" enemy for Kratos than Zeus. Zeus was reacting (even if massively, with cataclysmic blows) but Odin is acting against Kratos in both subtle and unsubtle ways.

I love that transition at around 3:27. It sounds so beautifully (and forebodingly - if that's even a word) cold, which from a meta/mythological standpoint, suits Odin: He's descended from Primordial Frost Giants (with his grandfather, Buri, being the first fully fledged Æsir), and the place he was born in, Ginnungagap, in terms of real life locale, is supposed to encompass parts of what the Vikings called Vinland/Vindoland (so, at least some remote parts of Canada), and or, somewhere in Siberia. And, in one of the sagas involving Skjöldr (who is actually a bastard son of the All-Father in the classic myths. Imagine if they actually included that relation somehow, later in the series, like if he did some sort of Zeus/Poseidon style bed trick, then organised a situation, where he was pretty much orphaned, but, blah, blah, blah, headcanon...), Odin is supposed to be from Scythia, which is the ancient world term for several areas in the Black Sea: specifically, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania etc.). Yeah, I'm a history and mythology nerd, as you can guess from this comment. That reminds me, speaking of half God illegitimate offspring, according to legend, Heimdall is supposed to be indirectly (but not too indirectly responsible) for the creation of Ancient Norse social classes (I can't remember the specific terms/names). Going by the name Rig, Heimdall travelled through Midgard, probably on a sort of lad's weekend, and one night, he ended up knocking up three women (he needed his downtime, you know), who gave birth to his sons. These three half-brothers became a peasant farmer/slave (a peasant, anyway, I'm certain of that), a warrior, and some type of earl/count.

Yes and no. I upped the tracks' volume by a tiny bit because I feel they're usually mixed super quietly. However, Bear's stuff is mixed in a way to where it's VERY bass heavy, so sometimes the bass can sound super defeaning and drown out the instruments, which sucks because I usually up the volume to make sure that's not the case lmao. But it's a fickle battle, it was especially hard to get it right for the Rings of Power suites and I feel I kind of succeeded with those

Odin's theme, it plays the first five notes, then five different notes come next, and the theme ends with the same five notes at the beginning of the theme combined with more different notes. I've heard it several times; specifically in Ninjago, from the Overture theme, to Master Chen's theme, to Kalmaar's theme, and even the Vermillion's theme. I know there's a name for it; I've been looking for it for a while, but I never seem to find it.
