ODE TO NEWFOUNDLAND

I MADE THIS TWO YEARS AGO AND SENT IT TO FRIENDS AND IT ENDED UP ON KZread ON ANOTHER SITE. I AM DELIGHTED THAT IT DID BECAUSE THIS WAS WHAT INTRODUCED ME TO KZread.

Wow! I just saw the beautiful pictures of the rugged coastline and crashing waves, heard the folk song with harmonious voices, and thought how evocatively beautiful it all was. I guess it's all in what we choose to give our attention to. This video to me depicts pride of place and family connections that run deep. How beautiful.

The history of this wonderful anthem is so interesting: written by the Governor of Newfoundland, Sir Cavendish Boyle, and set to music by Boyle's friend Sir Hubert Parry, the composer for example of the celebrated setting of William Blake's poem "Jerusalem". -- In the 1940s when I was a boy my father had a large map of Canada in his office, showing a huge white gap which, I was told, were Newfoundland and Labrador,-- not then part of Canada. I found this very disturbing and was exhilarated on 31st March 1949, when Newfoundland became a Province of Canada. The Ode to Newfoundland should be played on the Peace Tower carillon on every anniversary of this event.

Sara B. She is an American 99% sure of that, click on her name and look at her KZread videos. "The men from the country are some of the most heartless, ignorant, blood thirsty that has ever been born." is what she said in her post below. Well I am a Newfoundland man, my father, right to my great, great, great Grandfather are all Newfoundland men who have killed seals for one reason or another. In the past seals where killed for food, and skins, and yes they were killed with a club as they could not afford to waste valuable powder and shot on them, they were living in a very harse environment barely scratching out a living. In the last 20 years or more seals can only be killed with a rifle. Now Kathy Sexton more then likely does not know what it is like to live in place like that where you had to live off the land or starve. My father told me stories when he was a kid of having to kill seagulls to eat, this in the 1930's! So I take great offence to people who have no idea what in the hell they are talking about and are hypocrite's to highest degree, because if they pick a flower that's killing a living thing period. And a great percentage of these people are Americans who are very ignorant to the facts and have big mouths to boot. If she came to Newfoundland and started shooting off her big mouth like she did below, I would push her off a wharf in second.....

You are quite correct I recall my grandmother telling me stories of survival in a rural community, and how everybody for survival basically had to come together as a community or basically die. So everyone in community no matter what they had came together in a community donation type of thing and then it was distributed as best could be. I love to see that happen today, if something tragic happened, I think there be a lot more death in the community then what happened in 30s.

I’m from Ontario, but whenever I complained about the cold when I was little my mom would sing this to remind me that no matter how bad it gets at least we don’t live in Newfoundland. I don’t know anything about Newfoundlanders but if they’re this proud of the fact that their weather is garbage I have nothing but respect for them. Keep it up you complete maniacs.

  • @picturenut

Newfoundland weather is indeed challenging especially in some places. You belong to Ontario and the weather you have in Toronto it’s not the weather you have in northern Ontario. The weather we have in St. John is not the weather they have in places like Grand Falls and Corner Brook which is very similar to your Toronto weather. That’s it… We live here, we love it here and we are most of us anyway, and quite thankful we don’t live in Toronto. I’ve spent some time in Toronto and it’s a beautiful city but your weather is extreme in heat and cold and I’ve been there in some god-awful weather where I slid from one end of the place to the other but that’s life. E erywhere is different.I’m sure you love Toronto and I would love it if I were there too.

Right! Maybe, Lab City has extremely cold winters, but not the Avalon Penninsula. I knew a guy who was an American Navy Air Force pilot and he said he's been stationed at Argentia to test American military planes in cold weather. I laughed at him and said Eastern Ontario has colder weather than Argentia. I asked him if he got up to Labrador with his test flights and he answered, "No!" Probably some big wig from the southern states had decided to test American planes in Argentia where the weather was supposedly cold. LOLOL!

I hate to see this comment and the discussion following. I did ask her where she was from but as far as I can see, she did not answer. Every country has a dark history. If she were American....you only have to look at Slavery. From what I can see the attitude towards blacks has changed very little. Perhaps she was not there at all. In Canada we have the Native people and our own problem with slaves in the last century. I find killing anything horrible so I can not see a deer, bear, caribou, moose hunt. It sickens me as much as seals . I couldn't hunt seals. Neither could my grandfather who went once...and no more. But I respect your rights to do these things...within laws that are established for the protection of the animals. We don't want a near extinction like the Buffulo. To quote Jesus as accurately as I can; "Let you who are without sin, cast the first stone."

There is no difference between the killing of seals compared to any other animal. It is part of life. It is unfortunate that the likes of Paul Watson et al have gotten rich on the backs of Newfoundlanders who went to sea and risked their lives to feed their families. My father was on the Viking sealing ship as a very young man when the ship blew up, the results of some American film producer who wanted to make a movie. My father barely escaped with his life but others were not as lucky. People are so quick to judge but could never deal with a tiny fraction of the hardship and peril that the sealers faced just to make a living. God bless them and thank God for his mercy in saving my father.

Why aren't they showing the bludgeoning and mutilation of baby harp seals, That is a big part of the New Foundland history. A country that appears beautiful on the outside but has a very dark and bloody side to it. The men from the country are some of the most heartless, ignorant, blood thirsty that has ever been born. And if you don't shiver ever time you picture a baby seal being beaten half to death and then dragged by a hook while it whines then you are only partially human. Ode to Newfoundland my ass.
