That Magnavox recorder NEEDS the remote to do anything. I had the same model.

Actually, that Laurel and Hardy DVD set is an Australian PAL printing; that much can be deciphered by the green boxes with the G-in-a-triangle-symbol rating and the text "General" on the back.

Yeah, and it's Region 4. I used to buy a lot of Australian import DVDs; they were easy to get in Finland and worked on most TVs, unlike region 1 discs.

Literal LOL at the boomerang. In my early youth, our neighbors had that Moody Blue blue vinyl... I'd never seen anything like that, never forgot it. And I didn't know Fibber McGee and Molly made the jump to TV.

2:37 The members of 10cc also worked on the soundtrack for the cult film Animalympics. And speaking of vinyl, Michael Fremer worked on the film and voiced half the characters. 3:14 I've seen quite a few "accidentally-bought" PAL releases at a local library's book and DVD sale. And I once accidentally ended up with PAL copies of Watership Down and 101 Dalmatians.

That recorder is made by Funai and they’re decent when they work, the stuff I’ve uploaded here has all been captured from their machines. I had one with a hard drive that went bad but someone here said to try replacing the caps.

3:20 That Laurel and Hardy DVD is the Australian PAL version. We don't have a G rating in the UK, that would be "U" here.

At the beginning seeing Santa on his back on the bookshelf most likely means that Santa drank a little too much Christmas cheer during the holidays. Then again, that is how a good number of us deal with the holidays. Happy New Year Ben and all followers of OddityArchive.

I got a Toshiba DVD recorder with remote at my goodwill for $8 all working and in like new shape. A common problem on all funai built players is the SMD caps. They like to go bad causing it to not burn correctly and if they get bad enough not play a DVD at all.

  • @TheMediaHoarder

I have one of those that went bad, thought it was the drive but will try replacing the caps and see if I can bring it back to life. The hard drive was neat but I really never had any use for it, in hindsight I should’ve filled it up with infomercials from a standard-def sub channel that showed them continuously.

I see you try out these electronics and wonder about what happens at US thrift stores before they go out on sale. I really hope someone safety tests them so they're not a risk of blowing up if someone plugs them in. I'm a charity shop volunteer here in the UK, and I function test a lot of the AV gear we get - a lot fails, sadly. Cheap DVD players that won't eject the disc; cassette decks that either play wobbly or won't record anymore; turntables that only play at either 33 or 45 but not both. It all ends up as e-waste. Though, actually, LCD TVs are the worst for not working. One thing fails on them and they're unusable.

I'm confused. Did that Goodwill have a theft problem of someone stealing one shoe out of each pair? I'm sure it wasn't, but imagine if that was the case. Some crazy guy going around sneaking half a pair of shoes out of a store. Actually, doesn't feel that out of the realm of possibility. I was at a Marshalls, one in a very good suburban area, where someone returned their old, worn out, covered in grass stains and dirt (at best dirt) and it got restocked. Either that or someone stole the new pair and left their filthy ones behind.

Okay, not even done with the video and I gotta say Ben, second tier Laurel and Hardy? Past their prime? I beg to differ. I quite enjoy the Fox period and especially dig films like THE DANCING MASTERS, THE BIG NOISE and GREAT GUNS. Sure, Stan Laurel had almost no say when it came to the creative aspects of the films, but they're still enjoyable in their own right. Please read my reviews of them and pick up the two Fox sets, they are not nearly as bad as their reputation implies. The less said of the two MGM films and ATOLL K, the better though.
