Oddity Archive: Episode 130.5 - Ben’s Junk: DBX Cassettes (DBX Addendum)

When researching the DBX episode, as best as I could gather, there were no (legit) pre-recorded DBX-encoded audiocassettes. Turns out there was a line of Classical tapes.

Thank you!! I like the fact you keep your audiophile equipment separate (not all the gizmos in one box). I myself have an ADS Atelier 3 head cassette deck with azimuth tracking and while I am overall pleased with it, I find too many parts just adds to the distortion of the actual music. I am impressed with your evaluation of the Dbx tech in general, and am going to upgrade to a deck with Dbx (Denon or NAD). Can't afford a Nakamichi or a Revox, those and Tandberg we're the best cassette decks available!! Keep up the good work Ben!!!!

HOLY SHIT You have such high-quality recordings of some of my favourite music ever!!! Too bad that even if I had these I still can't find a decent and affordable cassette player, never mind DBX! I'm not sure if you even like this music, but if you do, ENJOY. I do have most of this on vinyl, but cassettes are so much more convenient.

DBX released pre-recorded tapes around 1983. Recorded using high bias 70eq tape, very similar to Mobile Fidelity quality cassettes --perhaps competition. Authentic tapes have the DBX banner on the front bottom cover, and its the same style on the spine of the J card throughout the catalog. As well as an artists rendition of the band, not an actual photo. Made in the USA. Extremely rare (more than MFSL), however unlike Dolby NR, you need a DBX decoder or its unlistenable.

I have that same Holst performance on CD - not DBX, obviously. It definitely gets around. It's probably about the only classical suite I still refer to after performing classical music in public school for 8 years. That experience was more useful for informing me how to listen, not what to listen to.

That sound quality was amazing! I read that one reason why DBX didn't really take off was the fact that if you played a DBX encoded tape on a non DBX player it sounded absolutely terrible, and Dolby noise reduction didn't have that problem to anywhere near the same extent.

The DBX tapes without the processing sound just like the LP's without the processing (minus the surface noise). There's an example of the LP minus processing in the original DBX episode.

didn't sound that good either, but that's the trade off what the majority of people are often willing to go with

Cool! Tapes pre encoded with dbx! I wonder where to buy them. Lamentably my 1995 GMC doesn’t have dbx decoding only National Semiconductor’s DNR.

Was this dbx noise reduction mechanism like dolby b/c?

DBX was a competitor to Dolby Laboratories. The noise reduction itself was pretty strenuous like Dolby C, but had its own quirks. It did find a place with those 4 or 8 track cassette portastudios.

That's even more interesting, so this dbx was used mainly by professional music artists (and in their 4 or 8 track tascam portastudios?)

It did also appear on a couple of domestic cassette decks in the late 80's. The Technics RS-B605 had Dolby B and C, and also DBX. Why it had both I do not know. As for Portastudios, I had a Tascam and a Yamaha model, and both came with DBX. I guess this was where it really ended up, having failed to make it in the home audio market.

Much as I dislike classical music, given a choice I would much rather hear classical over the same re-used "boom boom boom boom" of today's electronic music.

Not me. EDM is 100x better than opera shit. What's the point of listening to music when you fall asleep and feel bored? You want music to give you energy and make you alive!

I agree that classical is boring, but EDM just makes me want to either throw up, kill someone up or smash my head against the wall! I've suffered too many late night parties from noisy neighbors to permanently dislike EDM & Rap. Rock, Metal, Jazz, Blues Disco, Funk and Soul is real music.

Taste is highly subjective of course. The only thing that makes me retch is, if I can sum it up in a commercial radio format, hot country (can't get away from the crap, I live in Oklahoma). Most other stuff I'm OK with. Of course, I drive my immediate neighbour nuts with everything from opera to ska to marching band music. He told me most recently he decided he liked the 'Hamilton' cast album that I had innundated him with for months on end.

Replying to Anaussie: Classical music meets my love of detective shows through shows like 'Endeavour' and 'Inspector Morse.' The former has made great use of classical music -- including a whole episode where a serial killer staged murders and/or planted clues based on famous operas (among those referenced: Otello, The Mikado, and La Tosca). Helps to explain that 'Endeavour' is a prequel series that depicts the young version of Morse. As of this posting, the current series of 'Endeavour' is running on PBS Masterpiece.
