Odd “autumn ritual” fixes ugly lawn in 1 week

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Fall is here! And that means it’s peak season for our lawns!
If you're looking for that one magic move to make your lawn look fantastic, here it is: go all-in on fall nitrogen blitz. Why, you ask? Well, when the weather starts cooling down, it's like a green light for your cool-season grass to flourish. Plus, the soil temps are just right for those roots to do some serious growing.
So, what's the deal with this fall nitrogen blitz, you wonder? It's all about giving your lawn a nitrogen boost. This helps your grass recover from any summer damage and stock up on nitrogen goodies to see them through the winter. This extra stash of nitrogen not only toughens up your grass for the cold months but also jumpstarts the green-up process come springtime.
When doing the fall nitrogen blitz, its important to use fast release nitrogen. This helps avoid any delays in the nitrogen's nutrient delivery. In this video, we specifically use DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) (15-0-0) and ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) fertilizer at the following rates:
10oz DEF per 1k sqft mixed in 1 gallon of water: 2 X Per Month
2lbs Ammonium Sulfate per 1k sqft: 2 X Per Month

  • @PrincessCutLawnCare

    @PrincessCutLawnCare

    8 ай бұрын

Good morning! im not sure what setting it would be but i would advise you to set it to the lowest possible setting and keep walking over your lawn multiple times until its emptied. This is a common best practice that will ensure you get even coverage, it may take long to spread since you have to go over it multiple times due to the slow distribution but you can be rest assured it will be spread even. Have a great day!

And would like to get seed started to avoid erosion over the winter. What seed would start this late? Also, video idea: I found out that a lot of "contractor mix" is 80% annual seed. Maybe explain about the USDA tag showing what is really in the bag.

I've noticed this as well. I live in Germany and it seems that residential lawn care is not popular here and my local "experts" recommend waiting until Spring before applying any fertilizer and stop cutting the grass in late October. I thumb my nose at them and continue taking care of my lawn until it is covered with snow...although one time last year I did mow after a very light dusting of snow.

The one thing you'll want to be aware of is that if you overdo it, the grass will grow like crazy and you'll have to mow a lot. Here in the Pacific Northwest (Washington State) where you get quite a lot of rain, this can be problematic as you won't be able to mow effectively due to wet grass and it can become quite a hassle. Also, note that you're effectively "charging" the grass for next spring, your lawn will be storing a lot energy for winter and it will go into "turbo" mode come next spring. So keep your lawn mower blades or reel sharpened and be ready for a sudden flush of growth.

Eastern WA here, and even though we can have dry summers on this side, you ain't kidding when you say too much wet grass growth can be a problem. The blade is so fast and easy to swap out on my push mower that I just keep a second blade sharpened and ready to swap in when the current blade shows signs of dulling. Easy to tell when that is because they don't mulch nearly as well when they're dull.

Blitz definitely works! I'm just using Scott's Lawnfood weekly on my new 1000 sq ft side yard- and it's well on its way to quickly spreading into the harder to establish washout areas along with maturing. My main front is now a year old, and I'm hitting it with bi weekly apps. Both are lawns need mowed every three days, and are pretty much the darkest green lawn in the entire neighborhood. Definitely will do an ammonium sulfate + feature liquid app maybe 2-3 weeks before Oct 31, and then call it a wrap.

It’s early October here in the North and I’m considering putting down compost. Followed by killex due to a slight weed problem. Should I use nitrogen after or before this?

  • @PrincessCutLawnCare

before, it will increase the weed killing effects of the killex and will also feed the compost to help break it down further

Hey George, I'm in Knoxville, TN and a lawn company just aerated and over seeded yesterday. This is my first time doing this so I let the pros do it so I can get an idea on how to do it myself next time in the spring. I found out from the lawn care company that aerated my lawn said it's a combo of Fescue with Bermuda near the curb (uggh). The Bermuda is starting to thin out. Costco has the Blue Def for $13.99. Can I apply only the Blue Def over my lawn or is it better to combine it with the ammonium sulfate?

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Right on, thanks George. I was planning to mow it tomorrow as I have to mow it every week since the fescue grows much quicker now that's it's cooler. The chelated iron + baby shampoo did wonders to my lawn. It's still deep green.

And using on new lawn, planted Sept 1 mowed twice. Planted tall fescue and perennial rye, some died out due to 85+temps last week in Tenn. Opinion. How long to wait on new grass and surfactant needed or not, how long to wait to apply if hosed in to new lawn,
