Octopus Escapes - Boxed In - Episode 3
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
In the third episode of the Octopus Escapes series, our octopus-Houdini is confined within a square box with only one way to get out.
The only exit is blocked by two heavy blocks, each weighing about 1 pound. The blocks are dressed in the same color with the box’s interior walls so that the octopus is better able to spot them by feeling rather than by seeing.
The octopus must understand by touch that the blocks can be moved, and then lift them to remove them.
This challenge was very stimulating for the octopus as it had to use both brains and muscles to achieve its escape.
We hope that you enjoy this fascinating display of skill and cunning as much as we did, and as always, please share your ideas for future challenges in the comments’ section.

That’s funny how he’s trapped in a confined space, gets out and immediately goes into his hideout.

It's interesting because of the openings in the cages versus other experiments w/ bags, etc and different animals too.

Those are more akin to arms than tentacles.
Octolab: Well, he escaped that one. He’s learning. Time to go home. Octopus: I thought they’d never leave. First I’ll make some popcorn shrimp in the kitchen, grab some firewater from the boss’s desk, then head to the breakroom to watch some TV... hmmmmmmm... McGyver or Amazing Animals?
Reminds me of my last job: "No more will I be intellectually constrained by your devilish prison of the mind! I WILL BE FREE!" Quit job, go back to my apartment and watch TV...

Diane Clarke Oh so glad you saw it too! Yes, I cried at the end but yet rejoiced at what that man learned from that magnificent animal. And the really exciting thing is we have so much more to study in our oceans. ♥️

Acquibajo Wrinkle thank you 😊 I blubbed like a baby to... when he sat with it and was stroking it... it was like the octopus was saying goodbye... I’ll probably watch it again though, I really do love them 🐙🐙🐙
I hope he had a little crab treat in his little den after all that drama 🦀🤗

Octopussy cats.
Sometimes these videos have me concerned about the octopus. I hope they never feel too panicked, stressed or traumatized by these experiments. I feel like the ones inside cages or clear boxes can at least get a feeling about where they are but the closed one like this one seems like it could be too frightening

They really take good care of their octopuses. You can read more on their website under about us section but I copied this for you. "As we have mentioned, our octopuses are official members of the team. At no time would we place them in any sort of situation that would put them at risk or that would bring them discomfort - much less pain. At Octolab we adore the octopus."
I laughed out loud when I saw the thin tip of a tentacle wiggle its way out of one inadequately-sealed corner of the box.
So, another KZread unboxing video.

8-legger... you got this!
I would be interested in having an octopus being given an escape challenge and then have it repeat the test 5 minutes later, 5 hours later, and finally 5 days later to see how the octopus deals with it.
I would like to know, if octopus would be able to 'read' an exit sign if it was always posted where the exit is. I would expect that using it several times where they know where the 'exit' is then make it less and less noteable such as a wall that looks and acts like all other walls but by pressing the 'exit' sign gets the octopus out.

That seems like a quite good idea, is it possible to train an octopus to recognize which sign means "out" or "food". (Setup a box with say ten pipes with hinged doors at the end but only one unlocked. This is marked with green triangle the rest have red circles. After how many tries (days) does the octopus start going for the green triangle first? Alternative more variation in signs.)
You earned that epic victory dance, bro. 🐙

haha c: i love octopuses. i bought a mini sculpture ocotopus that i hang from my car's rearview mirror. i get compliments on how cool it is all the time ! it looks similar except all the tentacles are raised gloriously like that c:
So beautiful thank you
Yay, thanks!!
Such an amazing example of evolutionary biology.
You cannot hold me!!! I am strong and amazing!!!
You guys need merch! 🐙🐙🐙🥰🥰🥰
Weird question, how do you guys get your octopus into the confined box. Are they cool with their handlers moving them into confined spaces?

Octopus Power Save The Day Again!
"Freude! Freude!" Freude, schöne Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium."
Octolab, what would it look like if the octopus couldn't get out? Would it panic? Or just keep trying? What would a panic-attack look like in an octopus? How can you tell?
Wow, the octopus figured out the way out.
I think he crawls into his ball as a stress response.
This music sounds like something out of Morrowind.
OK, I have only one question ... when is the Octolab Soundtrack going to be released?????
The poor little guy didn't like the door being closed!
Superb!
I thought he was about to roll up his arms into those curlicues like he was flexing 💪🏻 after he broke out.
Octopuses have been compared to domestic cats for their intelligence and predatory qualities...
After the octopus escaped he hugged the wall like "Sweet sweet wall" then sniffed a coral.
I am curious, has attempts at teaching them communication been attempted?
I've never clicked faster
I love these escape videos. Those are incredibly smart creature's. Do you know why they change colors right after they beat your challenge? Is that some kind of victory dance?
wow.. such beautiful creatures. it appeared to me that her eye flashed a venomous look of frustration toward the camera before entering her den. does anybody know what that piece of flesh on her tentacle that appears to be missing? that white square looking 'wound' or is that something else? interesting c:
Octopus you are under arrest for the nursed of 16 crabs at once

I’d love to know how to identify the sex of your octopus so I would be able to think about the differences in their sizes and behavior. Thank you.

A male octopus has a special adaptation on one of the arms, called a hectocotylus. It's the third arm, if I recall correctly. It just looks clearly different than the other arms, and it is used to deposit the spermatophores into the mantle of the female.

hi mr octopus how r u
Poor creature must have felt some kind of fear, hence going straight to it's idea of safety and comfort. I didn't like this one. Do these octies ever get to be with others of their species and have something normal with others of their kind? Humans don't handle not having normal time with our own, but at least we can understand why. Very sad for these wee creatures.

Ha! I escape and reject your square & boring environment Sir! My yellow eye is most comfortable. I thank you to leave me ALONE!
Why are the octopus stuck in there seems cruel. No rocks or anything to shelter in. You are cruel
Why do you folks keep tormenting this intelligent creature? Every time I get a notification it's about you trapping him into some box, or lantern, or some other device. He must be so scared! Please stop it! I'm so close to just unsubscribing!
