I love styles of light and I decide depending on the subject, clothing, background and mostly what I trying to do. Sal I really like how you get to the point and whys without a lot of fillers. Great short videos that contain a lot of content.

All are beautiful and like you said it’s worth having both options to choose from for sure. As is the Westcott long throw reflector dish with the grids.

Love the shots. I love beauty dishes when i'm capturing headshots as my key. As for the octa I use with just about anything else or my large umbrellas. Double diffusion is always nice. Boils down to personal preferences in a way and client preference (what will speak more to them).

I absolutely love the images! You make both look so stunning. I love the feel of the beauty dish and the tenderness of the softbox.... I am definitely going to do a similar comparison....but I'm leaning to the beauty dish!

I'm not married to one quality of light. I like all qualities of light almost equally. Different qualities of light for different types of shoots is how I roll.

I've heard to use a beauty dish for a young beauty and a softbox for a mature one. There is a middle ground. A deep beaded silver umbrella.

yep. agreed. softer light is good for older skin. :)

I used to use both for various shoots but now I am using more a portable beauty dish, just because last month when I was working in Dubai, I was using an IPhone 15 proMax, and the soft light, worked a treat, (to my surprise) and what you are seeing a lot of nowadays is the iPhone soft light look, whereby the algorithm, reduces the contrast. I hate it, bring back some class. Go for the beauty dish, every time.. Let's not go down the iPhone Route!!! just because its easier!!!

What is the light quality like if the beauty dish has its diffusion panel in place? Closer to the Octa? Also ever shot with the beauty dish without the internal reflector and with the diffusion panel in place. That modifier has some interesting options.

if you remove the internal reflector and put the diffusion panel on... it behaves very much like an octabox or softbox... that reflector is what makes it a beauty dish. as for putting the diffusion panel on the beauty dish... it softens the light for sure but still slightly different since the reflector inside is adjusting the light source.

Since getting my Manny Ortiz Westcott Beauty Dish. I rarely use my Octo M's any more.

What are the differences between a hard beauty dish and the fabric dish?

So manufacturers make beauty dishes made out of metal. I find them a little bit more difficult to travel with and work with but they’re also much shallower which is a trait of the beauty dish. The fabric ones are a little bit deeper but they travel a lot easier.

Probably beauty dish with white diffuser will give both world.

i think so. remember... each modifier is going to have its own unique look... so the more shallow... or white or silver... are going to give a bit of a different look, but i have personally found this one to be overall much easier to use... and of course... much more portable.

You didn’t use a real beauty dish though. Yes there are light differences.

cant agree with you on that. definition would say - "creates more of a contrasty, harsh light, compared to umbrellas and diffused modifiers."... did we use a traditional beauty dish... no. i can agree with you on that. but the results are just that... contrasty... harsh, etc.
