Oceanic Whitetip Shark - Close Encounter with Divers - Elphinstone Red Sea Egypt

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

On our safety stop, an adult oceanic whitetip shark came out of the blue and started circling us. I've dived with these sharks a number of times in the past, and have never seen one so interested in a diver before. The dive leader (Farag) dived at Elphinstone over 200 times and said one had never been so close, he was gently trying to fin the nose of the shark to get it to go away, but it kept on pursuing him.
Eventually the shark swam off and we made a sharp exit to the Zodiac! Luckily no-one was bitten...
A dive site (brothers) in egypt has recently been closed as there have been four attacks in three months by these oceanic whitetip sharks.
Respect the sea and it's creatures - especially sharks!

Splashing at the surface like that and making yourself horizontal is a good way to get an overly investigative shark even more interested in you, Divemaster should have remained vertical and swum to the group rather than panicking and ascending to the surface.

I'm no expert at all but. It gave me anxiety how dispersed the divers were. I think you all need to group up tightly if a shark appears.

It was looking for weakness and an opportunity to sneak a bite, luckily no one was bitten, these guys act all docile, then when you least expect it double back on themselves and chomp. Easily removing a large chunk or a limb. Food is scarce in the open ocean.

That is why I always like to carry something in my hand, prefer a spear but a rod nothing less. One of the disadvantage of a dive charter. 40 years diving and 15 commercial experience so I have seen a bit.

Wow. I have a shark story, a little different but very sharky. We went out on a shark spotting trip. Quint was the boat operator and a shark lover, myself and Hooper tagged along to see some shark action. Needless to say it did not got well for our fun trip out or Quint.

Bold, persistent, pressing, and hungry, big mistake to wait for several to gang up, especially if a shipwreck or something else loud happens in the deep sea, the sharks would hear boilers imploding as they get crushed by pressure then they come from miles @ fast! Jeremy Wade had a low frequency water speaker and within 10 minutes he had 6 + Oceanic whitetip circling and bumping his inflatable boat enough he asked the big boat to come get him, they purposely moved him away from a big boat for the experiment, because the sound of the big boat could be what attracted them, so he was a ways from the boat with a 12 inch underwater woofer and he had instant deadly company Imagine someone in a small airplane crash at sea, you would be just missing and maybe they find the plane if the waters not too deep!

USS Indianapolis. Torpedoed and sunk in WWII Pacific Theatre. 1195 crew. Approximately 900 successfully abandoned ship in the about 14 minutes they had from first explosion to underwater. 316 survived the grueling 4 days until they were miraculously found and rescued. Many sailors died of their wounds, exposure, lack of water and food. Oceanic white tips took out hundreds.

Think the issue simply is that you're diving for sharks. Therefore, when you see one, you don't let it know you're not to be messed with, instead you move away, makes sounds, and let it choose who to get near to. Sharks, especially ones such as this, need to know you're serious, i.e. carry a stick, and prod it quite hard if it gets too close, nothing with teeth like that should be getting in your personal zone, or it can simply decide what part to remove, and there's nothing you can do about it, and you may die.

Yes, it came " out of the blue" because that is where they live. The shark believes it saw humans " right out of the blue" too, only they were just visitors

Hey Armchair hero here🤣…Initially staying calm seemed to work but if these things start becoming over inquisitive as this one did, do you think swimming at it and becoming the aggressor may intimidate it and move it away? Really just an honest question to some experienced people. I have and do dive on rare occasions. Just asking.

Wouldn't it make sense for the other divers to get close to the dive leader when the shark was acting hinky towards him ? To give a united front ?

Ok the Diveleader is a moron splashing like that. With 120 dives most in the UK I was in a very similar situation and got some great footage and amazing close ups of an 8 foot white tip that was just curious. Stay calm around sharks. Do not panic ever and if one gets too close blow some bubbles which scares them. It was not looking for weakness and you are FAR more likely to be killed by a cow. All diving is staying calm and controlling you breathing you see a Shark like this let it have a look around as you do your safety stop and enjoy the experience that so few do. I will look for and upload my experience and show you the difference. Keep Calm dive on

More likely to be killed by a cow? What a load of nonsense. These sharks kill at a moments notice without any warning or expression. Watch the other vids on whitetips attacking in Egypt.

@@2012mufc Actually, cows do kill more people every year than sharks. They are big animals and if they charge and trample you, you can get fatal injuries. It's very rare as they are mostly docile but actually it's very rare for sharks to attack humans as well. Image out of millions swimming in the oceans every year, that only a few dozen die from shark attack. Most sharks will just swim on.
