Rodela dc You can stop if you don’t give into the anxious thoughts that tell you that you need to go wash again “or else..” I work in retail and touch many things all day long..money, that many other people have touched first, counters, products, etc..and I don’t have the anxiety to go wash my hands or I’ll get sick and die. I’m still here after 35 years and I only get a regular cold once in awhile. Our bodies and most, everyday objects, have normal communal germs on them that our immune systems are used to. I am evidence that by touching many things all day long, that your fears of germs are not logical...your brain had somehow been scared in your past by some bad experience with germs. But, don’t believe it, just try it out, and don’t give into the compulsions to go wash your hands and eventually your anxiety will lessen! Good luck and God-bless!

I used to wash my hands for at least 5 minutes or longer. My mom reminded me of something recently from medical research. To wash your hands thoroughly all you need to do is sing Happy Birthday 2 times. Because my OCD is very stressful and anxiety provoking, I am now able to wash my hands by singing Happy Birthday 3 times and then I shut off the water in dry my hands. I feel this is a good improvement to take some control of my OCD. Obviously, I still have to fight my OCD more!

When you turn on the faucet with dirty hands, the handle becomes contaminated. After washing your hands, for ocd sufferers, touching that dirty handle again will contaminate one's hands again, thus repeating the process. It's a vicious cycle. It's a hell I wouldn't wish on anyone I care about.

@@gtyrone83 I too have small cuts in my hand due to constant use of soap and water and paper towels of course,, I can totally empathise with you. However I would suggest, if it will be Ok for you, then at least try putting some oil onto your hands and palms, (I do use hand creams/ edible coconut oil). This really helps. In this way, your hands get some good rest & recoveey time.. When I look at therapist solutions like the one shown in this video, exposure & response treatment, it gives me more of an anxiety as to how I will be ever able to cure this as I know I don't want try ERP as it is not making sense to me for the very reason you pointed out (that the tap is still contaminated). Also, if you can, try if you can get your tap fixed to get tap with sensor. We have this in our office, it really gives some relief as the hands are completely untouched from tap and even soap dispenser. So try for automatic / sensor detected liquid soap dispenser and tap sensor as well if possible

To see how he washes his hands makes me shiver cause i would want to scream at him NOT to keep the soap under running water and keep his hands under running water cause that's not how you wash your hands. You should leather your hands with the soap away from the running water and THEN rinse them. Otherwise you are just wasting all the soap down the drain and never creating the friction necessary to remove the dirt for which you are using the soap. The soap used under constant running water only is like not using soap at all. And I believe this regardless of my OCD which makes me repeat the process 10 times or more or less according to the level of dirtiness i believe i have in my mind.

OCD is a manifestation of a form of anxiety. It is caused by neurotransmitter imbalances in the brain caused by hyperactivity in the frontal lobe. Amino acids such as GABA can be tremendously helpful. Also NAC, Tyrosine & L Theanine (Green Tea) etc. are very helpful. Once the brain activity is down regulated over a matter of few weeks, most of the recurring / broken record thoughts and rituals go away. I know this because I lived it for 40+ years and have finally been helped by the above without the dangers and side effects of prescriptions. No one deserves to suffer from this in this day and age. God bless!

I cried watching this video because I related to everything you said, especially about the nozzles. I’m convinced there are germs on the nozzles so while washing my hands I get some antibacterial soap and wash the nozzles with it. The type of soap I use comes from a pump and it has to be antibacterial. After washing the nozzles I then proceed to wash the pump itself with soap. Lastly, after I’ve convinced myself that both nozzles and pump are clean, I proceed to actually washing my hands. I have to wash my hands at the least 5 times, most of the times more. There’s been several occasions where I’ve washed my hands so much, that they get super dry and start bleeding... I didn’t think I actually had a “problem” because I didn’t want to downplay the symptoms from those who truly suffer from ocd. But watching this video and seeing how I related so much to it makes me think maybe I do suffer from some form of ocd.

I always have to wash my hands three or more times or else I won't feel relaxed. If I end up accidentally touching the handles or the inside of the sink, I have to wash my hands one more time, or two, or even three if the dread is bad enough. I even stomped my feet on the ground when it happened today because I was so close to freedom, then with one small mistake, I got sucked back into my habit. I just want to get over this already. I want my normal life back

I have been jumping to this video, your channel and other videos daily after my Mom showed me this video and the 'Don't follow that thought' video. Tourettes and OCD has proven to be a big problem with me. My memory has faded about this over time but apparently 2020 or so, around Christmas, I kept on saying 'I don't want to be here.' As the OCD had spiked that much. It did calm down of course, as it always does but it has gotten to the point where now I'm trying to avoid going to use the toilet. so step by step it's, I go to the loo takes about a minute maybe two, so now lets move to the hand washing, I turn on the tap and I put soap on my hands and all the way up to my elbows on my arms, I dig my nails into the soap and scrape them over the tops of my nails and I wash off the soap and push the soap out from under my nails, I wash my hands again, do my nails again, and then I do that one more time, I set the soap down, dig my nails in and scrape the tops again on the set down soap and I rinse them, I wash the rim on the bottom of my shirt, I grab my soap, wash my hands and dig my nails, I have been trying to cut down, at the moment its about two or three times, then I drop water onto my feet. Thanks to your videos I've been able to reduce washing my hands again by repeating the 'I saw it, I heard it." Line. I do the tops of my feet, maybe the lower parts of my legs depending if there up or not. then I do the bottoms of them. I continue with my hand washing about one to three times again, I do my arms again in that process so likely three. I scrape the soap off my arms with my hands and continue to wash with the nail digging again. (the reason in my OCD mind is that soap does not go under the nails, therefore it must not be clean and given it doesn't really feel like it goes over your nails I have to do the tops as well.) Again thanks to the shower video with 'One is all you need.' I've been able to cut down on how much I wash over the tap handle to just once, I finish washing my hands about once or twice after washing the tap and I set the soap down, Dig my nails in, do the tops of my nails, push the soap out, wash the soap off, and turn off the tap. It is not the most ideal I am aware, but progress is being made. I have set out some goals and what is very annoying about my OCD at least is that it adds logic into its thoughts. Due to holding off for so long I end up missing some times when I go the loo and it lands on my feet. Hence why I do my feet and it also will tell me that theirs bacteria and germs from where I'm standing due to previous misses hence why I do the underside of my feet. so the feet I don't think I will be able to calm down unless I can avoid missing as much in which case I'll need to calm down these first (my goals.) Goal 1: Stop doing my arms. Goal 2: Stop doing the rim of my shirt. And Goal 3: Turn the tap off normally. Progress on these goals are already being done. I'm planning to get kitchen roll inside my room so I can try my hands after turning off the tap and the bonus being I can scrape away the bacteria and germs that (while there aren't) are on the tap. (Please don't tell me if this isn't the case as I have found with OCD it is sometimes better to lie to it or be in the unknown so you can bend it into your way.) For my arms I have to see what I can do but perhaps saying due to not touching anywhere that could set it off I'm fine? then same goes with my shirt. I may have to still do it occasionally as I have to hold it up when going. (I can not tuck it under my trousers otherwise when I do go to the loo I'd have to get in the shower.) It will occasionally get caught by my trousers in which case I just need to do that part and move on. This is definitely an early work in progress but these videos have proven to be vital to me standing up to my tourettes and OCD of which I originally took in as a second mind or person inside me. (Yes I do sometimes end up having conversations with it.) However the four year old bully analogy has been a much better comparison and much better into helping my recover. And for the OCD and tourette readers know that things will get better, OCD will calm down after a spike, if you are new to Jim's channel then I highly suggest going through more of his videos, these are my suggested ones, This one, How to take a shower, How to turn off a stove, Don't follow that thought, How ERP works, Your Senses vs OCD, and for the very long one, Facebook Live with James Callner. (That one is on KZread btw.) There are many others but these are the main ones I suggest and the ones that have helped me the most. The, How to calm anxiety by breathing, one has also been a help but not as big as those ones. You can do it and you will get on top of OCD, maybe not fully but once you do you will take control. Know that you are not alone in this fight and you are loved. Good night. ❤❤❤❤❤

I mean, obviously I don't feel like doing it, but I want to be able to do things that way. The time and stress I'd save are incredible. I want that. I'm gonna ask my friend to help me with it. Being under running water is very grounding. I find if I do other grounding practices like connecting to the earth through bare grass or hugging a tree or an animal I am more grounded and less anxious and don't feel the need to wash my hands quite as much! Also, Garnier Hand Repair - intensive restoring hand cream with maple sap and glycerine. This is a lifesaver for me whenever I wash my hands so much they crack and bleed.. heals them up almost overnight.

Obsessive hand washing is a manifestation of my emetophobia. I hate how dry and cracked my hands get in the winter. It hurts so bad sometimes and it’s also annoying when people comment on how bloody and cracked they are. In the summer they heal up. They used to be pink every summer but this year they’re back to they’re normal color. My hands are healing more, the skin is still thin though. I’m definitely better than I was 4 years ago.

I wash my hands once, than splash my face with water, then I have to wash my hands again and again and again. I can’t open doors, I can’t touch the metal or I have to wash my hands again. I can’t touch the sink or even my hair brush in the morning after washing, I don’t know what I have but I’m tired. It hurts my hands.

I wash mine no less than 3 minutes but most often atleast 5 minutes. I have people look at me in public even had a lady in a theme park say "you must be a nurse!" To which I commented close...massage therapist lol except that was just to awkwardly place my OCD on my job as a massage therapist vs admitting that I feel crazy and can't wash my hands a normal amount of time. 🤦‍♀️ I feel most frustrated that I'm still fighting with the thoughts in my head even once I stop and then it hits me how much time I waste everyday washing my hands for 5 or so minutes at a time.

This video is very helpful and inspiring for me...I have OCD, have gone to therapy, take medication, but I still do have OCD on a daily basis. I usually have contamination issues so I will wash my hands several times during the day, and in a thorough manner to get under the fingernails, and I totally understand about the washing of the knobs. I often feel like I get the sink itself (knobs, spout, etc.) dirty and I end up spraying them with bathroom cleaner after using the sink sometimes. And sometimes I'll worry that the soap container itself is dirty and I'll have to wash that. I've had dry skin for a few years now on my hands, and the color on my hands is darker than the rest of my arm. Seeing that my skin looks unhealthy is reminding me that I need to confront my OCD. Thank you for this calming and inspiring video as I learn to manage my OCD.

+James Callner can you email me at bmchoszen@yahoo.com I want to talk to you privately and maybe give you a call. I'm 27 years old and I'm struggling deeply with OCD contamination and It's hard to do ERP now because I have Health Anxiety that prevents me from starting ERP and certain beliefs why I can''t do the ERP for the OCD. The OCD contamination comes from the fact that I get recurrent sinusitus and rhintis. But I've done Immunoglobulin tests came back normal. I also did WBC test and normal is 4-11 I would always get like 4.3 4.4 the Dr says its normal but recently It's been around 6.0 which is still normal. I said 4.3 is on lower end but they said It's your normal because It's been that way for years. I OBSESS about catching infections that will cause Sinus Infections that linger for months. Usually this is the case but usually its allergies that cause it. I told the Drs theres something wrong with me and my immune system but they said immunoglobulins are normal and that my blood count is fine several times. They just said you have allergic rhintis and thats what gets you sinus infections not because your deficient or have HIV or something. I take allergy shots for 2 years now and I also see a ENT soon to see if I need sinus surgery. I cant do ERP because I need to protect myself I tell them

I just want a rule of whats normal washing, then I'll follow that rule. I don't know what's normal anymore. I don't want to use ERPT to the point of beeing excessively dirty, I just want to stop at the normal point. And I wish I had germ fobia, that would be much easier to overcome. My fear is of the ickyness that comes from my own body, especially vaginal fluids, I'm not scared of them for myself, but I feel responsible for not spreading them onto others, especially my family. I do understand that if I spread a few microparticles, that's normal and inevitable and also OK, but I don't know were the limit is drawn. if my pair of dirty underwear touches the floor and I drop a book on the same spot on the floor, can I touch my book and then the table were we are going to eat? I had to do the laundry in my new home today, and the washing machines are in another building, the struggle was too much. I must find a better system. I just need to agree with myself of what is dirty and what is clean enough so it aligns with my ethics, and then I can change my habits in an instant with little anxiety

One time I got sick after touching a doorknob on my way to my study spot and then scratching my nose. And now my hands look like they have lupus because I wash my hands after touching anything I know other people frequently touch. Or if I feel like they're "dirty," which is quite random. I like to use scalding water, because it soothes the itchiness from the cracks in my dry skin.

That's like how I wash my hands, and I tried hard to not touch the sink or anywhere else. After I washed my hands, sometimes I have the thought "It feels like a specific part of my hands still have soap that didn't get rinsed off, I should wash my hands again." It's not like there is visible soap on my hands, it's just me fearing that if there will be too much ingredients of the soap left on my hands that could harm my skin. What should I do? HELP. I am tried of spending a lot of time washing my hands and having a lot of anxiety which affect my life and studying.

The thing is soap takes at least 20 seconds to disinfect. He didn’t even wash his hands correctly. Soap has to foam up.

I start washing my hands too long now as well , its like when one thing gets better the ocd picks another way to make your life a nightmare … The worst thing is that I am a mechanical engineer and I have got an OCD. And it is a contamination OCD. It is very difficult when people dont know what it takes.

Omg that woman made hand washing look so easy lol... while for me, my brain was like “no no no, she’s doing it wrong, I can’t do that, you can’t do that. You have to wash them 4 times, and you cannot touch anything after washing them”

I just wish I knew how to do things the normal way.. I wear gloves or have to wash my hands several times after I take trash outside to the garbage can or when I move the van to and from the road. Or after touching other things that make me feel like my hands are dirty afterwards.

Thank you for this...I have reached a point where if I don't do at least 3-4 rounds of pumping soap and washing hands, I just don't feel okay. The thin top layer of my skin is almost totally peeled off. I will start doing this from today.

It is so tough to get someone started. My wife has this and she has to wash 3 times after going to the washroom and 6 times after a shower. I don't even know where to start.
