Occipital neuralgia treatment with Prolotherapy and Nerve Release Injection Treatment

Ross Hauser, MD explains our approach to resolving the structural cause of occipital neuralgia with Prolotherapy for the upper cervical instability and Nerve Release Injection Treatment to help release the occipital nerve from the fascial plane.

Extremely interesting! Our son had a broken dens between C2 and C1. I think it was OS dens endotedeium, or something like that.He had surgery for this in Hamilton Ontario Canada a few years ago by an experienced surgeon. Your diagrams and explanation of this area is helping me understand things.

This is the very best explanation of Occipital Neuralgia that I've EVER seen! I'm a part time Florist. When my Occipital muscles get inflammation I have to massage my neck with Oxy Rub. I was able to stop the Headache this morning. The back of my neck is still very tender and sore to the touch, but The Headache is gone, for now in any case. My brother recommended some kind of Lazar surgery? My Chiropractor who diagnosed this problem used Acupuncture, which almost always seemed to stop the pain for a while. Sometimes I'd have to go back for more Acupuncture. I'd go see him on a Tuesday and Thursday. Or Once a Week. I was lucky enough that he accepted my Caresource Health insurance. I live in Cincinnati Ohio, but I plan on Moving to South Florida in the next year or two. Most Likely Palm Beach County

I have straight neck and haven't considered some things I've been dealing with, such as swelling under the occipital bone, vertigo and vibration etc., were connected to my cervical issues. I've had one cortisone shot in my neck, but it only helped a little for a short time. I think I need to do some therapy on myself to help the curve. So glad I found this channel. 😊

I have been to 8 months of doctors, specialists, surgeons, massage therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, Lyme disease tests, bloodwork, MRI, Xrays, injections in my hands... After getting a second nerve conduction test today, on my way out the door, I mentioned how a muscle pinch in the base of my skull, makes me nauseas and feels tight all the time, and he told me it was probably this. I am seeing a chiropractor regularly to have my cervical curve corrected. I have had 2 consucussions with severe whiplash. I absolutely have cervical instability. Your videos and literature describe my life. After seeing many doctors I am shocked how none of them could help me. My pain is definitely occipital and trigeminal nerve pain which causes severe eye and neck pain. I am better with the chiropractor visits and receiving prolotherapy from a PA that attended some of the schooling that Dr Hauser is associated with. I received a ocipital nerve block and the pain is pretty much gone and I am shocked at how much it helped. I no longer take the emgality or any of the migraine medications i took for many years. I have heard mention of occipital or trigeminal nerve oblations. My question is what does your clinic think of the oblations? I know I will continue with the prolotherapy but are the oblations a good idea in conjunction with the continued prolotherapy?

36 yo pharmacist here. have had a headache for approx 15 months. all day, ever day. it started one day at work, has never really went away. always same spot, right side of head/face. sometimes feels behind the eye, sometimes right sight of skull, sometimes right eyebrow, like the nerve itself almost *in* my brow. extremely frustrating and depressing. also have neck pain on right side. back of neck and in the muscle in front right neck, when i move neck side to side or back. i used to hold phone clamped on shoulder, also stared down at computer screen. maybe that caused it (as i said i was at work when all of a sudden the headache came on - i remember it quite clearly.) just stumbled across this page and will certainly look more into it. things like travel and cost go thru my mind tho, as i have my 3rd child under 3 years old due in a couple months.

Swelled tonsil on the right , right ear fullness , deviated tonsil on the The right , tonsil stones , Rice Krispie sounds in my neck , lordosis , stenosis , spots In my vision , inner ears popping , blurred vision , heavy head , I could be here all day Your office would have it all figured out easily . I also have severe c 567 compression . Now I know I need that certain digital motion X-ray , a sitting MRI flexion extension All of this that these docs should already know . I tried anti-inflammatory diet and plenty of lukewarm water on empty stomach and that helped immensely. This by recommendation of my rheumatologist. She told me if it helps people with severe Lupus or RA, it will help you. Anything that irritates your stomach will affect your immune system and your nervous system and that includes any inflamated nerve or muscle or vertebrate. Calming down your nervous system also important (sun baths, saunas, walking in grass, deep/relaxing breathing ). Good mattress, good sketchers shoes, eating and sleeping on time, good ergonomic sofa chair to seat on. Also in car.

Me & my family doctor have & still trying to find a doctor to burn my nerves not just numb them my symptoms are so bad my mouth burns, I've been & still have to have toradol injections every month. It makes you feel like your nerves are going out of control it makes me nauseous, can't handle the way my head & neck feels makes my anxiety go through the roof, this pain is unbearable & people like us deserve treated right it's not in our heads the physicians don't know how we feel inside. There has to be a solution if they cut these nerves & burn them it's a known fact it's helping people why can't i get help suffering every day is not fun to live like this if anyone knows where & who does surgeries for nerve cutting & burning please notify me please I'm depressed & desperate for a cure or stop this pain it's too much!

I still havent gone to a doctor because i couldnt find time yet i will probably on tuesday but since i am already a med student and i have no patience on diagnosing myself i have diagnosed myself with occipital neuralgia after reading all the comments here and there of people having it i just wish i have made a mistake and i have something else.. yall made it look like hell and incured.. i feel like someone who just knew they have cancer now.. i am just 24 and always was scared of diseases i am so bad at accepting that this could stick with me for the rest of my life 😢 i hope a god miracle happens to cure me.. so it all started last night when i had this pain it’s like an electric shock pain radiates from under the ear/low jaws to my scalp sometimes it’s tooo intene sometimes less intense but happens every few seconds the whole time… since last night till right now.. i tried the heating pads they are a relief but once i take em off the pain is back so this is no solution… i cant focus in class like before or in anything pretty much this is a pure distraction.. i feel so bad … and yea i think it happened because i had an acne in that area and i tried to squeeze it which ofc didnt work but the area there is very sensitive and i probably damaged the nerve somehow.. still not sure if that was the cause because it hurt and tge pain started two hours almost after that.. how can such a very stupid act lead me to this hell.. all my faith is now in god! And best luck everyone i hope you all get better ❤

Is this likely to be occipital neuralgia or another type of migraine? A tight aching neck and kind of prickly/fizzy/sunburn feeling at the base of the skull, like you’ve brushed your hair too hard or have brain freeze. This can creep up the back of the head, over the top & into the temples but mainly stays at the base of the skull. It gets steadily worse and starts to throb at the occipital bone & turn into a squeezing pressure headache. Sumatriptan makes it worse. After a few days of this, I get the most severe nausea that can last up to 2 weeks. I’m also fatigued, weak, loose bowels and can’t stomach food. I don’t have the electric shooting pains or eye pain often described with occipital neuralgia. The extreme nausea is the worst part of it for me because no anti-emetics touch it.

Accidently came by this video and im not sure if this is one of the things im dealing with.. I had a concussion where i got hit in the back of my head but to the top of it. I tend to stretch my neck forward like having a computer-neck posture I have had like both neck pain and tightness while also a feel og tightness to my skull and a fell like electronic or shock suddenly releasing.. like a tightness in the back of my head (can have buzzing sounds and stuff) that tightness can like build up and then i feel like a pressure while the noise stops and the feel of an electric wave or something releases while im hearing a high tone and i get kinda Dizzy.. Then im not sure if its the electric wave or my anxiety that makes my chest muscles tighten up.. Im not sure if it could be Occipital neuralgia.. I have seen several doctors none of them could come up with a possible reason.. only things ive heard is "it dosnt sound serious.. im not concerned about that" And "maybe some neck/shoulder tightness or something from your concussion still affecting you" ??

Anti inflammatory diet (no sugar, grains nor dairy, no junk or fried food or food with preserves or hot peppers, chocolate). Neither cabbage or other inflammatory veggies. Little or not citrus fruits. Basically veg bassed diet with protein, healthy carbs, water no black tea or coffee. No caffeinated drinks nor carbonated drinks. No artificial sweeteners. Not even stevia or agave honey it is highly pricessed. Only some raw brown or sugar or real honey. Control your weight. Sleep and eat in time. Stress management. Eat healthy, nutritious. Vitamins. Plenty of water, neither very hor nor cold water. Lukewarm water 30 minutes before any med or breakfast. Grounding, breathing exercises, prayer, sun baths, sauna, relaxing/spiritual music. Sketchers shoes, good matress, good sofa chair. Proper stretching and posture. Anything that irritates you or your stomach irritates your nerves your immune and nervous system and your whole body. So good food starts in your mind, heart, soul.

We cannot make referrals to other providers - especially if we have not yet seen the patient and have conducted our own testing. We can recommend that you do some research and find a Prolotherapy provider who specializes in your area of concern. If you find that you are able to travel to FL, we would love to get you in for a consult. Wishing all the best in your healing!

I have military service related injuries to my neck and spine, and for the past several years have experienced this. Not knowing what it was i just blew it off as a strange headache, but recently this has become more severe. Im currently on hour 72-ish of non-stop stabbing pain behind the ear, every 30 seconds. Cant sleep, and my work is suffering. VA doctor doesnt seem to know anything about this and kind of blew it off. I need to see a specialist who understands this intimately and can speak to it. Can I make an appointment to see you for diagnosis?

Hi there! Could ON cause pressure to build up in the ears? Along with ON symptoms, I feel a constant build up of pressure in my ears that stays for some time and only relieves itself after awhile. It’s stopping me in my tracks, a weird sensation when I’m out at the store like dizziness, faintness, headache, nausea and ear pressure! It makes me nervous I’ll faint or something

hi, a lot of physicians say hydrodisections are useless because the body just reabsorbs the solution that was injected around the nerve causing the compression to return. This makes sense to me as any solution injected would not stay around a nerve indefinitely separating the tight muscle fascia forever. are you able to share some thoughts on this ?

We have an article on this topic if you'd like to learn more - hydrodissection has the potential to regenerate the nerves. caringmedical.com/prolotherapy-news/hydrodissection-cervical-plexus-auricular-temporal-nerve/

@@CaringmedicalProlotherapy I did read this article before but it doesn’t awnser the question I previously asked. I understand hydrodisection has the ability to heal the nerve but how can it indefinitely keep off the compression that’s causing the neuralgia ?

@@CaringmedicalProlotherapy as suspected…… radio silence to a very simple question I asked. All providers I asked this question to who offer hydrodisection can never awnser this question which makes me skeptical. Let that be a testament to anyone who reads this that’s going to spend thousands of dollars on such treatments. I can’t see any good evidence that this will work long term for occipital neuralgia as the evidence is little to none.

My eldest son has lived with this for over two years now. Recently, he's been having a numbness down his right arm and leg, when his pain gets bad, but it also seems to coincide with gut issues. 🤦‍♀️ According to one of the charts Dr. H showed, this could be an issue with more than just c1 and c2? 🤔
