Damn, you should have gone up to ten to get the perfect Ten Commandments of Photography. Every word you said should be put down in stone for all the gear obssessed, pixel peepers, shadow opening, sharpness fanatcis out there. Getting these simple rules in our heads is way better than a hundred technical tutorial on the net! Thanks, Craig, you are a True Master. Cheers
Guru...that's what you are. A Photography Guru. Loved it. So So true. Thank you for the laughs too. Brillant
I have friends who make nature photography, especially birds, and I have always accompanied them. They have 400/600 mm teles, I have an economic zoom up to 250 mm apsc (400 equiv.). Well, I have a photo of a heron, slightly out of focus, part of the body moved and about to hide among shrubs in the marsh ... And I love it !!!, more than the photos that I could hit to nail the focus and freeze in the air . I also have to say that my friends nail them all the pictures, but many of them leave me cold. Freeze a bird in the air, sometimes it has its attraction, when it is going to land or catch a fish, but without taking the flight. .... does envy speak for me? I´m happy with mines, without focus ,softs,....
Thanks for calling me an obsessive idiot. Yes, I love to nearly poke my nose into photographs in museums. I learn so much from it -- and it is a bit like peeking into the photographer's workshop, I find. And of course I am obsessed with photography. You have to be to take good pictures. At least all of the pictures I put on my walls took that bit of obsessive extra effort. [Yes, ok. I know what you meant in your video. And I agree.]
Wonderful! Great images, great advice! I can't agree more with you, especially regarding bokeh and gear obsession. Bokeh, to me is just a fad like flared jeans (for those old enough to remember them in the 60's) and invented by social media such as KZread. If you speak to advanced amateurs and professionals, they don't obsess over it. There are many more ways to separate the main subject from the background than blur and how round and "beautiful" is the blurred pin-prick! Gear obsession is something that retailers love as it sells more cameras and lenses. But, like you said, it is futile. ALL modern cameras can produce outstanding images, in the right hands. It's very brave of you to produce this vlog as you are opening yourself up to sad people who obsessed over all the very things you talk about. Well done and I salute you!
ha craig, memorys of the 70,s, 400 film walking the city at night, heaven, heaven.
8 minutes of pure common sense that every photographer, no matter what level, should be made to sit down and watch! Absolutely spot on with everything, Craig. I’m guilty of some of these, and it really brought it home. Thank you!
Dang ! Ya about made me spill my coffee at 4:53 !

Guilty on You tube.... what a wake up call that is for me :)
You saying "damn" really just made my day.
It's all so true, but what really stood out to me was the city scene at 3:44 - simply amazing!
Get up and get out! Except it's minus 9 Fahrenheit. I'd rather watch your delightful video and see your beautiful images, thank you very much! Wonderful!!!
I'm glad you posted Craig. The withdrawal symptoms caused by your infrequent videos were getting so bad I had to start watching the clickbait couple from the USA. (You know, the people who opined Micro Four Thirds is dead)

I think I know whom you're pointing to... these 2 are just ... stupid (sorry). They talk about really non-sensical topics (like changing terms of photography coz they make no sense). Typical (let's be stupid so we get famous)-attitude.

It'll be even worse if you resort to watching the American Chipmunk (The Fro) :)
'Bourgeoisie' sharpness! Craig, great video, great advise, thank you.
After all, this is the only themes youtubers talk about, over and over again. Thanks for a nice video with content.
Well said. This should be the rolled up newspaper smacked over the noses of many forumtographers.
Great advice l only watch you and Mike Browne. Funny that you're both from the UK. Best advice Mike gives it's you that take the picture not the camera.
Thought about what you said while walking the dog today. There was a photographic exhibition in town, rare occurrence, and I was blown away by the subject matter. It was a collection of images from RPS members I think. Not once did I pixel peep, look at grain, chromatic whatsit, sharpness or anything else. Totally fixed on what the photographer was trying to convey. Blown away by the images. I know that I'm improving bit by bit but I need to obsess less on what others think about my images. They say something about me and how I try to capture whatever the subject matter is. You're a star Craig. Love the vlogs.
Craig I'm loving the humour 😂 Right people, you've heard uncle Craig, stop obsessing!Get out with your camera and take some pictures.
The world would be a better place, if every master could talk about his vocation like you do. Gorgeous! Sadly I have to stop watching your Vlogs - every time I have this damn demand, to go out and trap some light through one or two glases. Drives me crazy, I tell you.
Much respect!
So true.!! Thank for these video.!
If only we were all so well adjusted. :-) One thing that bears mentioning is that IQ is a moving target, whether we're talking noise or focusing precision. Talking about the film days (I too shot film) ignores the fact that many images that were considered great back in the day wouldn't cut it now. Obviously, this depends on the individual image. Some moments are not repeatable. But that amazing wildlife shot you got in the late 80s is probably not saleable now, even as stock, unless it's a lion eating an alien.
I love your videos, great sense of humour in delivering issues, good tips and advice
I just enjoy being out and about taking photographs
1 camera and 1 lens.....it's the way forward and also check out ‘paralysis by analysis’!!!!!
brilliant video straight to the point
You are so right!!!

Such a great video... " Kick em out"! 😂
Very helpful thank you!
Great video thanks.......love your style and yet another inspiration to get out .....cheers
Wise words indeed. One of the best videos on photography that I have seen. Thank you so much.
Good advice, enjoyed!
Great advice! Thanks for sharing this short but very essential and meaningful video. Cheers
You hit them all Craig! xD Great video!
Great as always. I am guilty to be obsessed by the youtube-videos of e6 Vlogs😊
Well done! Funny and on point.
OMG - This is so me . Someone who talks sense at last. Thank you very much food for thought.
Guilty as charged m'Lud! Great video Craig and relevant to so many of us ... me especially ... many thanks.
Excellent advice. Thanks
I learn so much from you, this time not to worry always about ISO. The humor is a welcome bonus !
Refreshing, thank you very much.
Great advice ✔🌟
Another refreshing video. Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed by all the chit chat about gear, sharpness, lenses, editing, etc., I also turn to this channel.
Yet another excellent video and everything you talked about is 100% spot-on - Love your videos :-)
Best Photography Advice... period.
Great video, lots of sensible ideas and suggestions, off to give some a try and make a vlog about it👍
great video!
Awesome advice, just have fun!
Brillant!!
Great video. Completely agree. Y
The proof of your advice is borne out in your excellent images - you also made me laugh - fantastic.
nicely put
Very well said, Craig !!!👍🏼✅ You’re Spot on the money with this one 🙏😎
Spot on :) Thanx!
Excellent, I’m in the KZread obsessed category. Now heading out doors to take some pics. Cheers Craig 🍻
Well said, great video. keep shooting
Yes you got me on No.9!!!!!!!
Simple. Sensible. Nice work.
Thanks for that; I feel better for having listened to your sound advice. Mike in Oz
Great video Craig, all points I live by, mostly out of situational circumstances, but also due to the fact that I typically shoot for myself first, unless of course I'm on a job (I'm still going to shoot for myself, just a little more mindful of what the client wants of course.). I use the idea that if I like it, chances are someone else will like it. Keep up the good fight. Cheers -Shane
😂 Thumbs up, Craig!!!
Bonjour. I'm going to watch this video every morning and try to remember all of it, and then go out and take some images. Thank you.
Thank you for talking me out of buying a full-frame (Nikon D750) camera! You're absolutely right! Most, if not all, "better" photographic equipment is splitting hairs when it comes to a better image. Whew! What a huge weight you took off my shoulders. A crop sensor is just fine, damn it! I subscribe to about three or four youtube photographer channels. Yours is the best. It's informative. It's insightful. It's enlightening. And, most importantly, it's inspiring. AND it doesn't try to sell me something. When are you going to do a video on your post process!?
Thank you for the reality of this video, up to your usual quality. I WILL become less photographically obsessive than I am now and hopefully get more personal enjoyment from my shutter clicks.
Great advice for all photographers, period.
Great tongue in cheek video loved it! Funny thing about gear - some of our best images seem to be always taken with last year's camera! I am old enough to remember film and today's cameras mine being a Fuji X100F are far better than what passed as "professional" years ago. Great work as always
Thank you. Think of you the next days (maybe even weeks)
Talking about not being good enough...I say upload photos to Instagram, Twitter, etc. However, do not even think about joining a photo forum or photography group in Facebook, they are full of photo snobs that judge on gear you use and get a kick out of tearing people and their photos apart without giving any helpful advice, especially towards beginners. It was something I experienced and put me off photography for a while. Now, though, I do it for fun. I know my photos are terrible but I keep trying.
Great balanced view , creativity first the only obsession
Great advice, Craig. In the last few months, it's been this channel and Flickr that have put me on the right path with my photography. Prior to that, I used to spend an inordinate about of time wondering if my gear was good enough and thus, not going out to shoot because of that doubt. My gear isn't brand new or the latest models but it's perfectly fine to make pro grade images. It's me that has to get better and the only way to do that is to go out and take pictures. Many thanks!
The man talks sense!
Just one item short of being a great decalogue of how to enjoy and improve in photography! We never had it easier with digital photography yet we have so much to learn from Ye Good Ole Film Days, huh? ;-) It's actually refreshing and mentally sanitizing to listen to someone saying these things in such a cabal and relaxed way... BTW, love the humour, hehe... Keep it up and thank you for the wisdom pearls!
Great video!
Excellent well said Craig....love your approach..I was out today shooting so I feel like treating myself to your vlog..must shoot for 8.08 minutes more next time...hahaha
Your point #9 - KZread obsession - is a good one. I usually watch a photography video while I'm having my breakfast and often they do inspire me to get out and shoot and try something I haven't thought of before. Especially a channel run by a Pom who manages to inject a lot of humour into his urban and landscape jaunts. Thanks for a thought-provoking video. PS - Love the lighthouse 2:35 and negative space 5:55 shots. PPS - Best wishes in advance for your 30th.
He Craig, nice video and content I agree with your sentiments. I'm not obsessed with KZread, Being an ExPat living in the tropics of Asia, Seeing content like yours does inspire people, I share your content with a few of my Asian friends and they enjoy, unfortunately we dont have the likes of Snowdonia or my home of 40 years the Lake district. We do have a lot of Tropical rain forests, rivers and very thick jungle, but with you, and your fellow You tuber's inspiration we get out and 'try' to take nice images So thanks again for your many videos that 'Do' inspire us non Obsessed Asian dwellers :)
Refreshing advice Craig. Your comments re shadow detail was the first time I have heard or read such. I was always impressed with National Geographic photographs, many of which used blocked up shadows as an integral part of their composition. And therefore I could never understand why sensor reviews put so much stress on the importance of shadow detail.
If you're only 29 mate, then you've had a harder life than I've had! LOL Great video btw, and it's put my mind at rest about a few things.. a)I'm not the only one to obsess over these things, and b) It's ok to use (and enjoy using) the gear you've got, instead of hankering after top end stuff! Oh and c) It's ok for your photos to be a bit..er..soft..or as they used to say back in the days of film cameras, 'blurry'! :)
Best advise,.. less watching more doing . But i do enjoy tagging along on your photo adventures. You make it look all so simple.
Thanks Craig, just unsubscribed to all my KZread channels ........except yours lol. Lots of truths in this video. I always enjoy waking up on a Saturday having a coffee and catching your latest video.
