As a Gameboy and a Pico 8 fan, I have this, and it is perfect.

I agree. It’s damn near perfect for GB / GBC.

I have the RGB30 with the same square screen. Of course it's great for GB games etc. With 4:3 games, I set the ratio to approximately 8:7. It's a nice compromise. There's more game screen area and it actually still looks quite reasonable.

I need to get one

My guess as to why this device lacks more powerful internals is that it is not intended to play newer games. The big telling point is the display. A very square display like the one on this handheld is excellent for playing older games created before widescreen aspect ratios became popular. As the PSP games show, anything made for a wide aspect ratio will not display well on this device, and there are plenty of powerful wide aspect handhelds made for newer games.

They for sure wanted to keep this guy in the budget price range. PSP seems like it was added just for bells and whistles. There are handhelds that handle PSP much better. But this thing was a savage with GB, GBC, GBA and the minimal DS games it had on it. I’m sure that was the intended demographic.

4:3 retro games are not to be displayed on a square screen.

ho do you get the Hombrew Launch ap on the 3ds/

This is not a 4:3 screen and makes games look squashed would not buy.

Exactly, they could’ve made it 960x720 or maybe a cheaper version with 720x540

All the games you played were 4:3 and had a squashed/stretched aspect ratio and didn't look good. You 'wished the PSP emulator had support for this screen', so you want 16:9 widescreen PSP games to be super squashed to this aspect 3:4 (or whatever it is) aspect ratio? The DS games looked good and I think that's what this was mainly designed for, but overall seems like a very useless device.

Yeah, the comment about the PSP games not utilising the screen really got me. What was he expecting? They look to be using the full width of the display, so the only option beyond that would be to either stretch the image vertically (for huge distortion), or scale the whole image up until it fills the screen (which would cut heaps off the sides). It's a bit hard to take his opinion that the "games look great" seriously, when most of them are being display horribly distorted in the wrong aspect ratios. It reminds me of a friend of mine who put all the speakers for his 5.1 system on the desk around his monitor. When I asked him why he did that, he said he liked all the sound to be right in front of him. Thankfully he changed his mind once I explained the concept of "surround sound" and "positional audio".

I wouldn’t recommend buying this thing for PSP emulation at all. But if you were going to play PSP on it, I’d rather play the game in a stretched out full display than the scrunched up letter box it currently plays it in.
