Observation Fail, Intuition Win

Intuwintion?

Lally Luck Farm is a small scale permaculture/regenerative source nursery in Southern Maine. We're transitioning much of our lawn to row gardening and food forests, and converting the degraded woodlot on our property into a healthy and functional food forest in the forest. Come along as we document the steps to grow a source nursery from seed and our journey from overcrowded pine forest and lawn to edible perennials. We'll cover a broad range of topics from design considerations and processes to planting theory to plant management, so get ready to get into the weeds with us. We hope you'll join us in learning from our successes and failures.

I have had the same sort of experience with intuition on several occasions. First, growing out some beaked hazelnuts from seed collected a few miles from here, planting them out in what I thought to be the perfect spot, and then turning around to face a beaked hazelnut! Walked past it a zillion times, lol. Happened again when I purchased a Chelone glabra, found the perfect spot, looked up and spotted two a few yards away. I consider it confirmation!

I wonder if, on some level, we ARE actually logging these details in the background processes of our minds and then drawing out those cues unconsciously in our designs and plans?

That "ash" looks like it has an alternate rather than opposite growth pattern. Also convincingly serrated blades--although this is variable in ash, I think blades are more often entire. Possibly a hickory sapling. Sometimes takes a few years to achieve that classic hickory leaf shape and size.

Confirmation bias warning: I had keyed it out to *Carya* as well and am glad to see this mentioned! I try to figure identities on my own for practice before logging them in iNaturalist but there's a big red notification for species of concern and, acknowledging my fallibility, I paused. As always, I appreciate your observations and feedback!

@@lallyluckfarm TBH I've never seen a Carya spp irl but looks a lot like it, based on all of the USA content I watch... Ping me if you ever find out what is it!
