I may have needed a walkthrough to do this, but my attempts to do it on my own were far from humorless. My first thought was deface his wife's grave, so I shot at it with a bow. Well, I had arrows of savage frost. So instead of my totally genius idea working, the arrow richochets off the headstone and kills the guy instantly, failing the quest.
