I love this animations about OTA's getting severely damaged and essentially becoming human again I would love to see this in a future half life game there's so many possibilities and so many stories that could be told

Really interesting short film. With a lot that could be interpreted. From what I could gather, it seems that the head wound sustained by the soldier managed to undo the memory block placed by the Combine. Perhaps the crossbow bolt destroyed some sort of implant in his brain. This resulted in the soldier being able to recall his past human life. The vision he sees upon looking at his reflection are probably flashbacks. This is why he seemingly develops a conscious afterwards. It does not seem to have completely severed his connection to the Combine though, as we can hear the Overwatch as a voice in his head, still passing orders, ordering him to "respond", repeating the Combine's "sacrifice code" and telling him that he is in 'violation of civic trust". You can also hear Breen's voice in the background, referring to him as a "failure". I'm guessing Overwatch has detected that something is wrong with the soldier, and is ordering him to commit suicide, and it seems it would have worked, if it weren't for the fact his gun was out of ammo. Perhaps he would have tried to find another way to end his life, but the voice of the woman in distress seems to have snapped him out of his trance. Upon finding the woman, it seems Overwatch makes one last attempt to get him back under there control. This time, he overcomes their influence, and choses to help the woman. From this point on, his connection to the Combine seems to have been severed.

I always find it interesting that almost all of the Combine forces we fight are humans, modified or not. Those that aren't are Striders, Hunters, Gunships, and Dropships, and those things we see in the Citadel, but even these are heavily implied to just be other species the Combine conquered at some point in the past. Even the Advisors are suggested to simply be another race the Combine conquered as well, according to Breen Grub that is. But the takeaway is that we have not seen the Founding Species so to say. We do not know anything about the race that actually founded the Combine, aka the Universal Union, save that they can open fixed portals to other universes, conquer these universes, and forcefully integrate these races into their empire. We don't know what the Founding Species looks like, their motivations, how powerful they are, nothing. We know that they know about the Gman, and even have the technology to trap him, though it is implied that this was entirely Gmans plan to be captured. But this all makes the Founding Species so terrifying. We know nothing about them.

We lack knowledge about their appearance, their motivations, and the extent of their power. All we know is that they possess the ability to establish fixed portals across universes, conquer them, and forcibly integrate conquered races into their empire. They seem to be aware of the enigmatic Gman, having technology capable of trapping him, although it appears that his capture might have been part of his own plan. Nonetheless we can guess that their intentions are the conquest of the galaxies so they can harvest their resources and use them for their own gain. Their tech is light years ahead and they've also managed to harvest the energies of stars. What do they want from Earth? Everything, until it is lifeless and dead like Mars.

I like to believe there is no 'founding species' of the combine. At least, not anymore. Probably not since a very long time ago. In my headcanon I imagine the combine to be this clusterfuck of god knows how many species all morphed and assimilated into the one singular entity known as the combine.

the idea and execution are both very good, it has no fancy animation, but everything else is just so on point.

The moment you guy randomly upload an animation is a short moment of bliss in this nightmarish world

This is one of the best HL2 animations I’ve seen in a while! Hope to see more content like this in the future.

In story yes but the animations wonky for this day and age

I might be wrong, but so far i can see that making good looking HL2 animation is a hard job. But it is very interesting to watch them. Even if they are not perfect, they have a vibe of unanswered questions and mistery. I love it.

Yep, good visuals don't inherently make good games or stories. You can have PS1 graphics and still make something incredible :)

I like your idea, the fact that OTA soldiers can be unbrainwashed by recieving extreme damage to their visor/vital organs can make some interesting views on the HL2 Universe. Would love to see how it turns out

The journey of self-discovery can be quite captivating, for such a basic human quality having been lost, as the ability to remember and challenge existing beliefs. In his shoes, it was a moment of horror and dread.

it's actually kinda realistic since it hit the side of the helmet and not his head, and it destroyed the combine tech on the back of his head and gave him memory

the dream can be interpreted as that Combine Elite’s last moments of consciousness from their link to Overwatch being broken as they realize the horrors they’ve been subject to become an Elite and making amends for it almost. it’s incredibly sad honestly

The question would be in regards how much brain is left and how much of the computing and thinking is done through the digitalization of the soldier? In a way the Elites might just be copies of cloned consciousness, using apex bodies of proven warriors.

I made a video not too long ago, which was just a edit of imagine dragons demons. Where it was just the pre-chorus and chorus. I did not know who to add, so I did a wall graffiti artwork of Unit 36 from Entropy Zero 2. Its surprising how people are beginning to love the combine elites more now.
