alex laverick I understand that it is live, so how do you proceed with removing the terminal during the new battery installation? I mean you can still remove like you do normally but you need make sure that the positive terminal does not come into contact with any metal right? Can you cover it with a rag and then hook it up first on the new battery and there after connect negative? Please correct me if I am wrong.

It’s interesting that jumper pack manufacturers don’t make and sell these cables that plug directly into their power packs. They could make a few bucks just for the convenience. Thanks for the excellent demonstration.

Great video!! Found out the hard way this weekend that disconnecting your cars negative battery cable to do vehicle maintenance for a few hours will cause this pain that I had on my 2011 N1$$^N. Not only will it erase your codes and radio preset settings, it may also affect your vehicles immobilization/security features. After a spark plug and ignition coil change, I tidied up my work, reconnected my negative cable and NO crank and NO start. Turns out my battery was disconnected long enough for the BCM or Body Control Module to go "Dumb". You may attempt a reset of the security system but that's another full day. In closing, I'll be getting myself the OBD2 9v variant before maintenance of this kind is performed again. Now I'm smarter. Be safe all....thanks!

So what did you do for the bcm to go dumb? Did you just let the car sit longer for the battery to re-energize everything? Or had to get it reset somehow

Thanks for the video, it was informative. That 12 V battery does not have enough voltage and thats why LED on the cable does not turn on when you connect it. That being said, cars are usually OK with a little less voltage.

You don't need this ... I simply connect my battery charger set at the lowest setting 2 amp in my case and connected to both the cars battery terminal leads. Simply disconnect the battery while the charger is still connected to the battery leads , install the new battery connect the leads to it and disconnect the battery charger from the battery leads. All done ...works every time.

When diagnosing a problem, sometimes you don't want to lose the stored codes/data. Also if you want to pass an OBD2 smog test shortly after disconnecting the battery the computer has to show that it is ready.

So what exactly need to be done while changing the battery when hooked to an external 12v source AKA memory saver during new battery installation? I still go about removing the negative terminal first and then positive and make sure the positive terminal is covered with some kind of a rag so that it does not come into contact with any metal, I would then remove the old battery and install the new one and make sure to take out the rag and hook the positive first and then the negative. There would be no harm if you touch the positive terminal though (inadvertently) right? I would make sure to wear a glove though. Please let me know if I missed anything.

I've seen comments on other videos that SOME very new cars will retain settings for about 30 minutes long enough to change the battery. Seeing that desktop computers have had CMOS batteries for decades it seems incredible that cars do not. In computers the CMOS battery is usually a CR2032 battery about the size of a small coin & they retain the computer settings when it's turned off. These batteries cost about $3.00 on Amazon!

Did anyone check how much amperage the vcc pin for OBD can handle? If someone has a greater drain, as dome lights maybe, any other drain that someone doesn't know about, maybe you could damage obd wiring. I think the old-fashioned way of connecting a battery in parallel at the battery terminals is the way to go.

I'm not sure that the value in this is. Most of the work I do involves quick service crap, and we also do inspections. I simply wait until I've done the inspection, and then disconnect the battery if need be. This might be useful for people who do their own stuff before they bring their cars into the shop, to keep from failing and having to run the drive cycle.

Watching this is painful and the process so convoluted due to automakers cheap out on a replaceable battery ( couple bucks) or provide non volatile memory much like what's in your desktop, laptop computers. Never needed this, my odometer resets to zero, need to reset my clock, on one other car need access code to reset the radio, not a problem. If I have to I guess I install a pin out for the positive in the engine compartment and use the car frame as negative.

The only way I would attempt, but do not recommend, to save memory would be to hook booster pack to jumper lead location under hood, and carefully do the battery swap live. No manufacturer endorses memory saving, but rather they say just reset and relearn the system, including radio pass codes. If a person has a system that voltage has completely wiped out for whatever reason, this process many times must be performed anyway.
