You are the only guy who mentioned that the Positive terminal was hot when the memory saver was hooked up. Good job.

alex laverick I understand that it is live, so how do you proceed with removing the terminal during the new battery installation? I mean you can still remove like you do normally but you need make sure that the positive terminal does not come into contact with any metal right? Can you cover it with a rag and then hook it up first on the new battery and there after connect negative? Please correct me if I am wrong.

@@Sanhiriyan Yes, correct.
It’s interesting that jumper pack manufacturers don’t make and sell these cables that plug directly into their power packs. They could make a few bucks just for the convenience. Thanks for the excellent demonstration.
I used a old glove to store positive main battery terminal so no grounding. Thanks
Great video Rich. Especially the reminder that the pos cable will be hot!
I need to pick one of these up. Thanks for showing it Rich.
Great video!! Found out the hard way this weekend that disconnecting your cars negative battery cable to do vehicle maintenance for a few hours will cause this pain that I had on my 2011 N1$$^N. Not only will it erase your codes and radio preset settings, it may also affect your vehicles immobilization/security features. After a spark plug and ignition coil change, I tidied up my work, reconnected my negative cable and NO crank and NO start. Turns out my battery was disconnected long enough for the BCM or Body Control Module to go "Dumb". You may attempt a reset of the security system but that's another full day. In closing, I'll be getting myself the OBD2 9v variant before maintenance of this kind is performed again. Now I'm smarter. Be safe all....thanks!

So what did you do for the bcm to go dumb? Did you just let the car sit longer for the battery to re-energize everything? Or had to get it reset somehow
Thanks for the video, it was informative. That 12 V battery does not have enough voltage and thats why LED on the cable does not turn on when you connect it. That being said, cars are usually OK with a little less voltage.
You don't need this ... I simply connect my battery charger set at the lowest setting 2 amp in my case and connected to both the cars battery terminal leads. Simply disconnect the battery while the charger is still connected to the battery leads , install the new battery connect the leads to it and disconnect the battery charger from the battery leads. All done ...works every time.
I have one that has the lighter plug and alligator clips and uses a 9 volt battery. Works well as long as it's just a few hours. I like the OBDII idea.
Using one of these memory savers and changing the starter out if you touch your wrench to the positive side of the starter and then to the frame of the car will it Arc just as if you had the battery in it?
It will save your presets and the radio security codes as well.
Yes it does.
Also remember with the states and certain cities in Canada that have emissions tests --once you disconnect your battery without a memory saver, your vehicle will have to go through a relearn before it will pass an emission test
When diagnosing a problem, sometimes you don't want to lose the stored codes/data. Also if you want to pass an OBD2 smog test shortly after disconnecting the battery the computer has to show that it is ready.
So what exactly need to be done while changing the battery when hooked to an external 12v source AKA memory saver during new battery installation? I still go about removing the negative terminal first and then positive and make sure the positive terminal is covered with some kind of a rag so that it does not come into contact with any metal, I would then remove the old battery and install the new one and make sure to take out the rag and hook the positive first and then the negative. There would be no harm if you touch the positive terminal though (inadvertently) right? I would make sure to wear a glove though. Please let me know if I missed anything.
Hey Rich, They have a 9 Volt Bat., to Cig. Lighter, For under 10.00. Does the same thing, with just a 9 Volt Battery. Great Vids.

Yes the 96 lighter outlet should be live all the time
I've seen comments on other videos that SOME very new cars will retain settings for about 30 minutes long enough to change the battery. Seeing that desktop computers have had CMOS batteries for decades it seems incredible that cars do not. In computers the CMOS battery is usually a CR2032 battery about the size of a small coin & they retain the computer settings when it's turned off. These batteries cost about $3.00 on Amazon!
If you have another car battery around is it safe to hook this to it? I see 9v options and this motorcycle battery you used. Does it matter what size battery you hook to?
Can it save auto start/ stop for some car that 2020 + ? Because these car so sensitive after you replace starter, you need to reprogram auto start/stop.
Am I correct to say the Saturn SL2 (1996) has an "unswitched" cigarette lightet outlet, meaning it always delivers 12 vdc, even with the ignition key in the off position?
I'm currently making one of these but mine just has alligator clips on the end.
With this device, must you turn key to ACC or ignition before removing car battery?
An unusual way to feed power to the system. That led is good but another on the battery side would tell you when the battery is connected, a check for saver battery power, 1 led and a 1k resistor would do the trick :-)
Aww wow. Gee thanks for reminding me to make sure that the POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE doesn't touch EARTH or body of the car while disconnecting it from the Positive Battery Post. The Positive cable is alive because of the THE MEMORY SAVER. That touches ground. Ouch!! Cheers.
I have seen those with the 9 volt battery.

the 9v ones are junk. They are meant for pre- 1996 to save radio stations
It is a innova 3130.
You can also charge the small battery with this connection?
Did anyone check how much amperage the vcc pin for OBD can handle? If someone has a greater drain, as dome lights maybe, any other drain that someone doesn't know about, maybe you could damage obd wiring. I think the old-fashioned way of connecting a battery in parallel at the battery terminals is the way to go.

Before using one of these, you make sure you've switched everything in the car you possibly can off.
Can u put a link to buy that OBD memory saver ?
Unless I am due for yearly inspection I don't bother. So what if OBD codes are lost. In few days (weeks) of driving they will get repopulated. It's good to start fresh every now and then. Think of it as rebooting your car's computers.
Can we make cable from cigarette lighter to another cigarette lighter socket, then take battery off,???
Remove the old battery when the car is working Then install the new battery. This does not cause data loss But I do not know if it could cause damage to other parts

Can you just use another car's lighter socket to plug into instead of the additional battery?
@commieslayer8218
7 ай бұрын
Yes as long the cable will reach but be aware that some lighter sockets are oxidative from the red glowing plug for cigarette in case one smokes there or just by sitting and humidity makes its work in form of corrosion.
Where did you buy those alligator clips?
Did the tool keep your fuel consumption read out?
You mean the car battery we are replacing.
Why didn't you just buy a memory saver with battery clips instead of the 12V socket plug?
you must show how to protect + pole
Do I really need a memory saver to replace a car battery? I found an article on the internet saying or stating not to use such devices. What does anyone think? Thank you.

These products are a very bad idea, especially on newer cars with computer modules on a network. On later model BMW cars, you will either blow the Instrument cluster fuse, or worse, destroy the cluster. These products are not endorsed by most master technicians including me.

work fine when used correct, some run of a 9v battery. Makes it near impossible to damage anything as max current is about an amp.

@@wbfog cool story bro.
By reading the title, i thought that you will show how to do one of these.
This is a Schumacher #inc12vobd
What kind of scan tool do you have? I like it!
It's not that hard to just turn the ignition key to where the ACC or accessory mode is turned on, if needed, to energize the cigarette lighter et al. But spending ten times the cost is of course worth the effort - ?
Where did I buy
I connect long wire to the battery then remove the cable then put it down and put the new battery connect the cables and disconnect the wires, easy pizzi
I'm not sure that the value in this is. Most of the work I do involves quick service crap, and we also do inspections. I simply wait until I've done the inspection, and then disconnect the battery if need be. This might be useful for people who do their own stuff before they bring their cars into the shop, to keep from failing and having to run the drive cycle.
just taking off the neg side doesnt have any memory effect , right?
@garykolbo7228

Wrong...disconnecting the negative kills all voltage and memory lost unless you have a memory saver.
so I saw the comment below just want to be sure you said it saves the radio security code? asking bc I want to upgrade my girlfriends battery and she lost the radio code card from Honda. if this saves the code it will save us the trouble of trying to coax this out of the dealer.

+richpin06a For future reference, it does. It also keeps Toyotas from clearing their learned fuel mixture and refusing to start. If this happens, just clean the throttle body and unhook the battery again.
Watching this is painful and the process so convoluted due to automakers cheap out on a replaceable battery ( couple bucks) or provide non volatile memory much like what's in your desktop, laptop computers. Never needed this, my odometer resets to zero, need to reset my clock, on one other car need access code to reset the radio, not a problem. If I have to I guess I install a pin out for the positive in the engine compartment and use the car frame as negative.

Nothing is bothered by having two power sources hooked to the car at once?
How snug is the fit of that OBDII connector, climbing in and out of the car with all that wiring right there in the way could prove to be futile, BEWARE.
Hey Rich does this save the radio presets as well? The reason I ask is because the pcm doesnt have anything to do with the radio does it? Thanks, Tom

Once you attached the car's new battery, at what point exactly did you disconnect the motorcycle battery?
@commieslayer8218

Right after that cause new buttery already keeps the PCM memory by the supplied voltage so no need for the motorcycle battery anymore.
Why not just plug the "powerpack", or your moto battery setup, directly into the cigarette lighter ... WITH the understanding that the lighter must be live, and not switched by the ignition? My Audi lighter is live all the time, so it would seem to work for me. Good job on the warning regarding the live battery cable when connected to the battery saver.

Why bother with this when you can just connect your jump pack directly to the battery cable before the cables are disconnected from the old battery??!!!

What do you recommend for saving the memory.
@wbfog
7 жыл бұрын
The only way I would attempt, but do not recommend, to save memory would be to hook booster pack to jumper lead location under hood, and carefully do the battery swap live. No manufacturer endorses memory saving, but rather they say just reset and relearn the system, including radio pass codes. If a person has a system that voltage has completely wiped out for whatever reason, this process many times must be performed anyway.

marc wischkaemper My father in law disconnected the battery on his Lexus to clean the terminals and posts. After reconnecting the battery, the power windows wouldn't work, the traction control light illuminated, and the transmission would not go into overdrive. It was a real PITA. I don't know about BMW, but if my fil had used a memory saver, it could have saved him money and a headache.
