I went through Portal 4 many times and worked little jobs in many of the buildings. Bill Wilcox walked into the room I was working in one day and I got to talk to him! I was there when they started shutting down in 1985, and watched grown men cry because they had spent their lives keeping everything working. The proper term for that "diffusion machine" at 2:53 is "converter." We are all Cold War Patriots.
I remember as a kid in the 90s going to see K25 and the gates of X10 with my dad as we would always pass by it on our way to Scott county every weekend. Such a beautiful place and national treasure.
Excellent video! Very well done! We have since moved, but our home was just across the Clinch River from K-25. Seeing this brought back many good memories of our time living in OR. Before we moved the museum was closed due to the virus and we didn’t have a chance to see it in person. Will have to go now when we are back in town soon. Thanks for making and sharing this video!
Great video. We will add this to the family travel bucket list. Thank you.
So I pay $20 to park at a Federal park nearby, yet a concerned citizen like yourself points out a glaring preservation need and no-one cna spare a few dollars. Thank you for the video and your excellent commentary!

You couldn't pay me to go there. This entire city is still glorified radioactive cesspool. For 70 years, radiation and poisons have been spewing out of the ruins of S-50, K-25, Y-12, and possibly even X-10 (Which they re-branded to The Oakridge National Laboratory). Since X-10 is still top secret, we'll never know what lingering filth that the government has been allowing to fester there. If you think it's clean and safe, think again. Lots of people getting cancerous illnesses in that place. Anyone living there who doesn't have and frequently use their own geiger counter is a fool. The military may have won the war, but they also walked away from the mess they made.
A GREAT place to live !
Very interesting indeed, would like to visit someday. I had a great uncle that was a chief electrician at k-25.
I actually work at y12,best job I've ever had!! Pretty sure you can come take a tour of y12 too..
Nuclear planes and spaceplanes never panned out... Well if it did, it would be top secret up to this day. The known types were dirty and got very heavy from the shielding (official reason for cancellation) or eventually killed a lot of crew and pilots, but in a war do they usually give up because of friendly fire?
I’d bring a Geiger counter if I were visiting this site.
Where is the check station located? Would like to check it out!

It’s on the Oak Ridge Turnpike close to Westover road.
At the beginning of your video, I thought the towers were for bungee jumping.
The main buildings of the Manhattan Project are K-25, Y-12 and X-10. How did they come up with those names? It was the coordinates on the map. Kind of boring huh.

They were meant to seem unimportant and not draw attention. The whole idea is it was boring. Haha

Kind of boring? No. Kind of contaminated? Big time!
How did they know the war would still be going long enough to use the bomb?

Hitler in Germany AND the emperor of Japan were each trying to literally take over the world, and they weren't stopping.
All those towers yikes
how about a less flaming narrator?
