For the record, these stars ejected over 2 SOLAR MASSES of gas. This wouldn't make planets though, because of the extreme radiation emitted. Instead it would create a photoevaporative disc.

It’s all just gravity. The material was ejected because it had too much angular momentum in comparison to the newly combined star.

Binary orbits are the best! If you reverse that movement, they originated at a point of collision. A binary pair can never form in that starting state, without a third force. But most external forces destroy binary orbits. So how does the binary orbit form? Million dollar question...
