As soon as we move off the mountain I plan to build an O scale layout. I have heard so many bad things about foam roadbed, I will opt for cork as my past HO scale layout had cork and I never had any problems with it. Unless you seal foam from the atmosphere, it will deteriorate and disintegrate over time. Cheers from eastern TN

Thank you for checking out the channel. I’ve had really good luck with it, it’s like a stretchy, very flexible foam. I have some from when I was in N scale that I never used that’s like 20 years old and the pieces are still like new. I figure the foam will out last me. lol. Also being sealed in ballast the track is very difficult to pull up. I’m not sure if there was different brands or varieties of foam made over the years or not that might have had deterioration issues. I used to use cork on my HO scale stuff also. It’s a good option, this particular foam was just so nice and easy to work with. Thanks for your comment! I hope you move off the mountain soon and get to build a layout! 🚂👍

Thank you, I was having a lot of fun on an 8’x8’ my first few years, look back in my videos at my Halloween layouts if you want. 2017, 2018, 2019 when I first started with O scale, that was the table I was using. Then when I started in my train room, originally was 7.5’ by 14’ and there is a few videos of my table that size with realtrax then fastrack on it. That is plenty of room for some fun! 👍

Thank you so much! I really like varying elevations, and being a smaller layout, it adds more points of interest and areas to observe trains run. Also be walk around give a lot of different viewing perspectives, and having come from the N and HO world, I like being able to bring those characteristics into my newly found love of O scale!

Great stuff!! I am just beginning a 10x12 post war Lionel O Gauge layout (which is only my 2nd ever) and wondering how many terminal sections I should put in… My 3/4” platform is almost ready to begin the layout, and I think so far I will run about 100’ of Fastrack. Powered by an American Flyer 30B 300 watt dual control transformer

Sounds like a cool layout. I’m not super knowledgeable on post war, I usually only have a 4’x8’ or 5’x9’ layout I run postwar on for Christmas and only use one lock on for each loop. On my main layout that is 8’x22’, I have a power drop about every 10’. I haven’t run into issues on either layout, I also don’t add in many switches.

A very nice video and layout. I have plans to expand my HO scale layout, and also intend on using foam as well as the Subterrain System, though I'm pretty sure my collection is nowhere near as large as yours.

Wow! I love your layout and the ideas of a continuous loop. I am getting ideas for my layout and I love the idea of using foam and the track bed together instead of just on plywood. Did you use the track bed with the MTH realtrax? I mostly have realtrax and I curious as to the sound deading, how was that? Love the videos!

  • @Crazy4TrainsToysNHobbies

Thank you! I really like realtrax! It was the first track I had in O. I would recommend testing the woodland scenics black foam track bed under it to see if it helps with the noise. I never made it that far. You might be able to double up the HO track bed to get the width needed or even double up the O scale and trim it. It’s super easy to work with.

I don’t have any switches on the outer loop and never have had derailment so far, the only thing I really have to watch for is if something were to come uncoupled, but I don’t let them run unattended. So far, so good! I worry more about an earthquake knocking everything off the shelves. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Looking good. I too used Great Stuff Gap Filler on a small section of my layout and was very pleased with the results (so no more plaster cloth for me). Also manufactured the exact blue foam board you’re using. It would have been nice if you would have ran your trains for a few minutes before ending, oh well maybe next time. Happy Railroading. 🛤 , 04/23/22
