O Me! O Life! - Walt Whitman (Powerful Life Poetry)

Read by Shane Morris
-
Walt Whitman is America’s world poet - a latter-day successor to Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare. His self-published verse collection ‘Leaves of Grass’ is a landmark in the history of American Literature.
-
In ‘Oh Me! Oh Life!’, Whitman questions his own existence and the futility of life. He ponders the "endless trains of the faithless," and describes cities full of foolish people, criticising himself for being no better. He laments that things never turn out the way he wants them to, and observes the "sordid crowds" around him who are also fighting through the journey of life. He believes that he is intertwined with these people, spending just as many "useless years" in pursuit of a distant idea.
At the end of the poem, he answers his own question-existence is enough of a purpose for humans to exist, and having life is reason enough for living.

✨In the first stanza, the speaker talks about negative elements of life in metaphor. In the second stanza, the speaker presents good elements of life for a strong contrast. With far more negative elements discussed than positive elements, the reader is noted that, although good things in life are so rare compared to bad things, embracing them could read to a "life" worth experiencing.

Even though Sir Whitman wrote this poet watching the contemporary of America . This poet actually is still able to hold on to it's meaning and metaphors which can be seen in the present society if noticed carefully . Embracing good aspects of life through negative aspects of life is what makes life bewitching.

The other is green leaves, blue spring and blue sky. Two people were looking out one window. I have never been discouraged by the poverty of man, another thing if his souls and thoughts are poor.
