O.K. Corral Shootout 140 Anniversary with Bob Boze Bell
Ойын-сауық
Bob Boze Bell made his way back to Tombstone for the 140th anniversary of the Shootout at the OK Corral on October 26th.
“I just love it there,” says Bell. “I’ve been there every year, including the centennial of the fight, 125th, and all the years in between.”
What is it about the wild west that has fascinated him all these years? Bell’s grandmother used to talk about how his family was related to outlaws, and that peaked his interest.
He remembers watching "The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp" as a young boy at his grandmother’s house when one day she pointed her finger and said “Wyatt Earp was the biggest jerk who ever walked the west.”
That was the moment that ignited it all, the spark that led to his love for the wild west, and especially his passion for Tombstone.
“I was 9 years old and my mother would go in to get prescriptions filled and I would run to the front of the store and buy the latest of True West Magazine because it told the true stories of the wild west.”
In this impromptu talk at the OK Corral Theater, Bell recounts the time he spent as a kid that led to his fascination with the Wild West and his journey to buying True West Magazine.
Bob Boze Bell is known as America's Western Storyteller. He is an artist, author, writer and serves as executive editor of True West magazine. Bell is a popular, sought-after figure in television documentaries about the Old West, appearing as an expert in dozens of Wild West history shows. Bell won an Emmy Award as Executive Producer of the PBS special, Outrageous Arizona, a zany look at the state's centennial, that he also wrote and helped direct. As an author, Bell has brought to life Billy the Kid, Geronimo, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickok in his best-selling Illustrated Life and Times series. His books Classic Gunfights I, II and III are must-reads about the most important Old West gunfights. Bell’s Bad Men is now in its fourth printing, while his illustrated autobiography, The 66 Kid: Raised on the Mother Road, gives personal insight into the passions that have driven him on his lifelong quest to interpret the history of the American West for audiences around the world.

Hey, Bob! I'm a fellow Arizonan (even though I've lived over half my life in Ohio). Grew up in Sierra Vista, just 18 miles from Tombstone. My father was a Civil Service pharmacist on the adjacent army post Fort Huachuca but worked an occasional Saturday in Tombstone's sole drug store so the proprietor could have a day off. Tombstone definitely wasn't the tourist trap it is today. The first time he did so, around noon Dad took a break to get a bit to eat but the restaurants were ... closed for lunch! Anyway, I recognize most of the places you mentioned. Thanks for the memories.
True West my maternal grandfather had a stack of those dating back to the 1950's. I lived half the time growing up with him and my grandmother sometimes on a ranch or farm and mostly a small town in the Gyp Hills! Back then no cable and only one tv station! So I bet I read them about 10 times each especially when weather stopped me going to library or fishing! My two of three favorite hobbies with TRUE WEST the third! Thanks to Bob Boze Bell for keeping those memories alive!
“…nothing changes more than the past!” Is a brilliant observation 😄
I've really enjoyed Bob Boze Bell's work over the years on various history shows. He's one of the best!
Bob should be a legend in his own time!
I trained all the actors for the movie "Tombstone". Mr. Bell is spot on.
My wife and I and friends played music inside the OK Corral during the 100 year anniversary of the shoot-out. How time flies!
Boze is the man. Been following him for 20 plus years now. His knowledge is amazing. Hearing him speak never gets old. And all the whip outs are fantastic.
I loved this video. I only got to Tombstone once. I wish I had been more often. I loved your talk Bob. We met once or twice over the years, though I’m sure you don’t remember me. I’m Mike Beliveau. I used to be the Black Powder Field Editor at Guns of the Old West magazine.
Bob Boze Bell is a legend in is own right ! From Portugal , God bless.
I have long been a fan of western history and grew up in the heyday of the TV westerns. For many years Bob has presented lots of well-researched information about the old west. His enthusiasm and animation when telling his stories bring the western scenes back to life for me. I was in Tombstone once when I was 14. That was in 1965 well before the town became a real tourist attraction. I hope to return once again before I sign off. Thanks, Bob for all of your stories.
Thanks Bob your knowledge and enthusiasm are commendable
WOW!! My wife and I were there last year at the O.K Corral at that exact time! I had plan the trip to Tombstone so we could be there on that anniversary!! 140 years ago at 2:30 in the afternoon! Book a room at the Larian Motel weeks in advance! Love the history of Tombstone!
LMAO! I sang the theme right along with you! I watched the show in reruns but I had a huge crush on Hugh O'Brien. I was thrilled to see him in 'The Shootist'!
I was there on the 131st Anniversary for my 2nd visit. I will be there for the 150th, Bob. I’d love to meet you!
Boze Bell fan since New Times, KSLX, KXAM and on! Keep on keeping on Mr. Bell. RUGER
I've learned a lot of cool stuff from Bob Boze Bell. Thx Bob
Cool.i watch tombstone territory.bat matterson.wyatt earp.and tales of wells fargo every chance i get.love your stories bbb.
So much to learn from Bob Boze Bell. Always enjoy reading his writings and I really enjoy the videos.
That was one of the best rundown of the iconic moment in "Western" history.
I could listen to Bob Boze Bell talk for hours.
I am sitting here, now, in such a good way. I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this video. Thank you, so very much for it.
Absolutely fantastic watch thank you
The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp is still on channel 1488 on Samsung TV, I watch it just about every day. It also includes the Rifleman and the Cisco Kid. I'm 52 and they are the best shows!!
I’ve been to Tombstone once. I loved it there.
His movie and paintings of Route 66 at The Powerhouse in Kingman are awesome!
I miss Tombstone, lived there few a few years.
Bob, your grandmother was more correct than the t.v. because t.v. was sold as an entertainment devise. "True West" magazine is the best magazine for the " details" of events that happened in the west. It is my "go to" magazine for historical information on the old west.
Hey Bob !! Nice to see ya still in the mix with True West !! It's been too long. Send my best to all at TW. I miss working with them, Robert Ray, CarolAnn, and all !!!
Well done mate!😊
I loved listening to this, thank you Bob! I have always been a fan of the old west. My grandfather had a gun belt on me and on a rocking horse before I could sit up by myself. My wife and I became friends with Wyatt(great grand nephew) back in 2004 when we met him on Whiskey Row at the Palace Saloon. We’ve been friends ever since, and I enjoy reading or listening to everything about that famous gunfight. I enjoy the True West immensely, keep up the great work!
Really enjoy Bob's stories and Magazine and his videos as well. My Paternal Grandmother's Father and Wyatt Earp shared a Great Grandfather. I remember her saying that Wyatt Earp was a "Bad Man" and he was not discussed in polite company. Bob"s Grandma and my Grandma would Im sure have seen eye to eye! Thanks for your stories and videos, and your Magazine.
I grew up in Oklahoma and I’m a real cowboy in my heart and drove cattle up the real Chisholm Trail. So naturally I liked western history and Arizona is full if it just like Oklahoma, I had no idea Oklahoma had so many Outlaws.
BBB, I love this, love your enthusiasm for the OLD WEST. Jim West
This man and Robert Word carry on the western tradition.🇺🇸
Seems like a great ole cowboy. Love his books !!
I hope to visit Tombstone some day, such a historical site.
That was fantastic, great presentation. You make the stories come alive with your enthusiasm, a lot of historians miss that part.
I was there for this and learned so much in a very short period of time from the master, Bob Boze Bell. Thanks for autographing my (your) Wyatt Earp book. I live close to Tombstone and drive there quite often, in fact I just got back a little bit ago. Today I walked the route the Earps and Doc Holliday took to the street fight and tried to imagine what they were thinking at the time. If you have the opportunity to visit Tombstone, do it.

Barnacle, hi, my name is Marc. I live in NJ but have been to Tombstone 6 times as its my favorite place on Earth. I hope to be able to move there soon. Can I have your email address? I would love to talk to someone who loves the place and history as much as I do and would love to meet you there when I come into town. I could pay you to give me a real tour of the town and surrounding areas since you live close. It must be amazing living right there and feeling that history and seeing it all around you daily. I really hope to hear back from you. Happy New Year!
I love the old west and always have, and I love True West Magazine. Keep up the great work, Bob, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.
I loved your presentation lol & you really deserve the award they gave you. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Awesome show thank you
Great story teller, thank you
Loved seeing the A-1 beer sign in the 1950's Kingman street scene at 11:30.
I really appreciate True West magazine and you and your staff and fellow writers. I love your KZread stuff. Love your stories.
Enjoyed much, watching. Congratulations on your Award as well.
I just got back from Tombstone for Helldorado Days a couple weeks ago. Always an amazing time. I finally got dressed in period clothes on my third trip there
Great video. Enjoyed watching this. We just did a trip to Tombstone last week. Really enjoyed seeing it again. And it's funny about your mention of KSLX. I cannot recall the other two DJ's with you at the time. I recall when you were on there and doing give a way's in the morning. My wife and I stopped by and got one of your give a way's. Keep up the good work.

What a great Christmas Present. I really enjoyed this. Thank you Bob!!!
True testament to a lifetime passion. It's inspiring and beautiful all at the same time.
Yesterday I re-watched the Kevin Costner Wyatt Earp movie. Now this pops up.
Thank you, Merry Christmas!
Thank you Bob, I really enjoyed your video.
In 2006 I spent a week with Kevin Costner on a night shoot of Mr. Brooks. He had his beautiful dog on the set with him. The dog's name Wyatt.
i read interviews by the sister in laws, who hated Wyatt, and said they thought he was also a stage robber, etc., He rarely smiled, and was rude to a lot of people. I don't care, he still fascinates me. I wish John Ford filmed his conversations with Wyatt. He had all of the equipment, and didn't do a thing to preserve that part of history.
sir, you are a talented artist. fine work!
Been there twice at 20 years apart.
Excellent!!!
Very interesting information and story telling.
Bob "Full of Booze" Bell missed the great Tombstone event of 1881. The big event that happened in Tombstone in 1881 was not the Gunfight at the OK Corral, but it was when Fatima " Little Egypt" began dancing at the Bird Cage Saloon. Fatima's bigger than life portrait still hangs in the Bird Gage Saloon. Little Egypt created a national sensation when she danced at the great 1893 Chicago World Exposition. She went on to dance throughout Europe. Fatima's Middle Eastern style of dance was called by the US news media the " Hoochee- Coochee", but in France it was called " Danse du Ventre" ( dance of the belly).
Fabulous.
Years after the OK Corral shootout. Wyatt Earp moved north to join the Idaho Gold Rush, and became a sheriff in a northern Idaho town.
Amazing video.
As always I always learn something from you. Thank you and merry Christmas.
Love this speech you gave Bob. I love your enthusiasm in what you do. Can I ask a favour? As you can see from my picture I love to wear hats and I really like the one you are wearing. Can you please tell me the brand and model name and where I can order it? Hope this is not asking too much Bob.

Yes, I love hats and this one is from Greeley Hat Works in Greeley, Colorado. Tell them I sent you.
This was fantastic! I wish I could have been there. I love Tombstone and get that vibe you talk about when I walk down Allen Street. This was personally fun for me because you showed the pic of Kathy and you. She was my 6th grade teacher at Moon Mountain. I grew up on your New Times article. Now I am a lifetime subscriber to True West. I'm excited every month I get it. Thank you Bob! Darrell Clulow
I feel the same way about Gettysburg, I just keep getting sucked back there like I am drawn by a magnet. A beautiful countryside that met with so much violence. On a side note, my wife is related to John Wilkes Booth, I kid her about being a presidential assassin.

I had so much fun attending this! It was an awesome 40th birthday, and was a pleasure meeting you!
Always good.
What a great quote. " Courage never goes out of style".
Nice you posted this Bob. I love hearing all these stories & speculations. I’ve got my subscription to TRUE WEST, so I get to follow. I do know all the words to the Wyatt Earp TV theme song.
So cool
28:16 That kinda explains those "pimp" lines from Ike in Tombstone. I have been questioning a bunch of things about that movie and it's script. Maybe that's partially due to them firing the original director and redoing the script.
Bob, I'd like to know more about Francis Miller the first Deputy US Marshal in the Indian Territory? What made her become a lawman and what happened to her? There seems to be very little about her.
VERY cool!!👍🇺🇲
If the Earps expected trouble why were not they all carrying shotguns?
Love history I am not in Bob's league enjoy your work if you can call it that he has to much fun. Thanks
I visited the ok corral 40 years ago. Y'all know what a cathouse is, right? Well the corral had a cat-BOOTH. A phone booth sized cathouse! Have no idea if it's still there.
Bob, you and Rob Word (A Word on Westerns) should get together some time and exchange ideas. I think it would make a very interesting story.
Love these videos. Have you investigated the lives of Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving?
Bob, perhaps in a past life you were there and had to return.
This was great, Bob. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
I haven't seen all your videos but wanted to ask, Have you done any thing on "Texas Jack Vermillion", also known as "Shoot Your Eye Out Vermillion"? He was my great great uncle and was friends with the Earps and Doc Holiday. Thanks!
Great video Bob!...I heard you mention Davil l Wolper appointment with destiny showdown at ok corral...my high school history teacher played that video for the class....it appears to have been filmed at the real ok corral and in the crystal palace saloon......it looked like they took the Fremont Street concrete block wall down to film that....it would be awesome if you could do a video about the making of that documentary.
@bobbell7213

Yes, they did take the wall down for the shoot. Unfortunately, they utilized the entire space which was about six times larger than the original open space.
Much of what people think they know about the Gunfight at the OK Corral is due to the old adage, “history is written by the winners”.
My own grandmother had a low opinion of old west heroes. Quite loudly about it
Was Wyatt Earp really with Doc Holliday, I believe in Denver, at the sanitarium when Doc passed on from his tuberculosis. Of course the Tombstone movie shows he was there but left a few minutes before Doc died, if you believe Hollywood.
I knew Bob when he owned the whortly hotel in Lincoln NM
Bob bose bell loved your radio show in the 90's but what you got against steely dan?
Good Stuff 👍🇺🇸

Yep. The group known as the Cow Boys did not wear red sashes, of course. That was theatrics to help the Audience keep up.
Schofield or Colt? I’ve read both opinions as to what Wyatt carried that day.
@slypperyfox

I'm pretty sure he wore a Colt. Reliability vs function? You can shoot a .45 Schofield through a Colt but not a .45 Colt through a Schofield.
Bob my friend is selling an old printing press it works
An Appointment With Destiny: Showdown at OK Corral documentary clearly states that Kate Elder Holliday is married to "Doc" Holliday. Can anyone tell me if that is true and what documentation exists?
Is OK Cafe open ? was closed for years. lately.
Great story, told by a great storyteller! Love your stuff, Bob. I lived in Oatman back in the 90's, and would love to hear any stories you have about that little piece of Arizona history! I wonder, did you ever visit there as a kid growing up in Kingman?
The Earps and Holliday never gave the Cowboys much of a chance. It's like giving a rattlesnake a chance. These were cattle rustling cold blooded killers and you never give these kinds of people much of a chance.
What music is that playing at the end of the video?
