Just to point out Gabriel is covering Mariah Carey version, so that demands all these riffs and runs, because if he doesn't do it can't be called "Mariah Carey Cover". I pretty sure is written in his video description who is covering in. If he said " I am doing a Josh Groban cover" for example and then sing with all those riffs and runs, definitely the criticism would be valid. Btw, the original song is not even in English. So, everything singing in English will be a cover.

Embora sua voz seja extremamente excepcional, ele me lembrou com os riffs e execuções excessivas que eu preferiria ouvir a abordagem clássica. Ou isso ou como Tara Simon (minha treinadora vocal favorita de SEMPRE) postou onde havia riffs aqui e ali, em vez de em todos os lugares. Ela deixou a música chegar a algum lugar emocionalmente com uma musicalidade incrível, enquanto Gabriel apenas exibia uma flexibilidade constante (e um tanto instável) que você só se pergunta quando ele vai parar. Não odeio sua interpretação, mas odeio como ele começou.

Well, I disagree with you. I think it IS appropriate! The song is a deeply emotional statement of faith and rather than sing it in the ubiquitous, same old traditional way, I LOVE his deeply passionate, emotional take. His rendition is soaring, and as a singer myself, I love his ability to let the song take him over in such a powerful, gospel way. From my point of view, this song recalls what must’ve been a momentous, terrifying and rapturous experience to behold: when the angels announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds…there’s nothing normal, ho-hum, or ordinary about Jesus’ miraculous birth. I think this beautiful piece needs to be lifted up out of the ashes of the staid, ‘religious’ formulas we’ve all heard ad infinitum, so easily forgotten once the church service is over….Gabriel sings it in a way that will not be easily forgotten or conveniently compartmentalized in its regimented traditional form. No, when Gabriel sings it, you hear and feel his heart as he sings with the angels in the passion and joy of the true Believer. Joy should not be restrained and seat-belted in; it should soar in abandonment. And nothing is more joyous the the birth of the coming Savior. I say, Bravo, Gabriel! And thank you for lifting us up to His everlasting arms!

Ironically, I like your take on why you disagree with me. I hope you know though I only meant it wasn't appropriate at the beginning so he could make room for any embellishments he wanted later on. Regardless, I love this reason for disagreeing with me and if that was his intent with it, then I support his decision this time.

He can execute riffs and runs perfectly yes, but no matter what you think of my reaction, I do NOT like (or find appropriate for such a sacred message) how he incorporated excessive vocal flexibility from start to finish instead of holding them off until the second chorus where he could've made them more special and unique. I'm sorry, but this was a poor choice of vocal style on his part.

If you truly want to hear a rendition of this song that uses riffs and runs tastefully and respectfully, check out Tara Simon's cover. She did more riffs and runs during the verses than the chorus but she still spared the main tune of the song from as many as Gabriel did.

So you’ve not heard Mariah Carey’s version? He literally one upped her version!

This comment is only for those who hate my critiques against Gabriel's riffs and runs at the beginning of the song. Thank you to all of your loving support otherwise! 😊 I honestly don't care what ANY one of you have to say about me, especially since you're looking at someone who cares FAR more about Disney music and show tunes than about supposedly hanging on to less vocally-versatile singers (like Bieber and Jackson). You guys don't know a thing about me, first off, if you think that I at all care about popular yet weak singers compared to Gabriel's never-ending vocal capabilities. Second, I will NEVER appreciate or like it when anyone (Gabriel or Mariah, it does NOT matter) plows their way through a song with obnoxious oversinging of riffs and runs instead of tastefully waiting until a more appropriate time in that song to open the gates for it. It's one of those things that if you're gonna do it you ONLY do it to one of your original songs. Try as you might, I will never change my mind on this.

Hi I think they are mostly pointing out that he is just making no changes to the original version. That said, I also heard from a Portuguese speaking analysis that due to him not speak English he carefully sings a certain way so it can be as clear as possible. Regardless, of course that criticism is welcome. GH learned everything alone with no support, so there is no expert behind him.

I'm sorry to tell you this, you may even have good arguments about Gabriel overexploiting some elements, but you ended up ruining your own arguments when you sang, it was very uncomfortable to listen to. I know it's horrible to be criticized, but it's better to listen to criticism and use it as a springboard for growth, than dwelling on the mistakes.

See the thing is you communicated that politely and honestly which is how I respond well to problems being addressed where as other criticism is too emotional and harsh for me to understand the problem they're communicating. If it's not calm, respectful, polite, and honest like you were, I won't respond well to it. Many people don't know that's how they should communicate anything, and I was raised on communicating like that, so I get nowhere with people who don't communicate problems the way you did. I also have already decided to stop singing entirely in my reaction videos and only save my voice for covers. First off, people who watch my channel would watch my covers if they wanted to hear my voice, not my reaction videos. Second, I'm tired of the criticism and I truly will never take it well at all if they don't try to be as respectful as possible about it (and no, to anyone who is harsh and disrespectful, that isn't babying me, that's actually mature whether you like it or not). Third, I've realized it's a social-no-go to sing in reaction videos to other artists unless you have decades of experience as an adult and you're also a vocal coach. In summary, I see the problem and it's already taken care of. Thank you for being respectful and polite with your communication.

Also, I appreciate that you're trying to help me when you say my singing ruined my arguments, but I will not agree with that. I am not the best singer, CLEARLY, but I am not a bad singer and I will maintain that stance until the end of time. You don't like it? That's fine. Like I said that problems been taken care of, but I refuse to believe that my singing is bad just because you don't like it

My suggestion is that you learn that you need to listen to different artists sing this.

Perhaps that's true, I won't argue about it, but I will always stand firm on excessive riffs and runs being put everywhere instead of singing the original melody and waiting until later to let loose so that there's somewhere for the song to go instead of doing the fun stuff from the beginning.
