O'Carolan's Lament - Traditional Irish - Arr. Kim Robertson

Музыка

Happy St. Patrick's Day Everyone!
I hope you enjoy this traditional O'Carolan tune. This was one of the tunes that my teacher taught me, I love the rolled chords but am still trying to make them as clean as possible. Hope you enjoy!

Traditional thought is he composed this as an elegy for Red Hugh O'Donnell. Clannad performed a lovely version.

Oh that’s awesome background. Thanks for sharing, it’s so interesting to learn where these older pieces originate from

Carolan may have chronicled the piece, recorded his version. But Red Hugh died in 1602, 58 years before Carolan was born. An elegy to Owen Roe O'Neill (d 1642) also is attributed to Carolan. It seems most probable these were composed by their Bards, original manuscripts lost, Carolan recorded his version of the originals. It seems unlikely a man so dependent on ascendancy patronage would've widely performed these nor taken the time and effort to compose the originals, though his sentiments clearly favored the cause they died for. The audience would've been mostly Wild Geese returned from foreign wars, their families, friends. Very few had much property or money, my own included, who were exiled in Galicia. And yes, they rode in Red Hugh's cortege, though where his remains are interred remains an unsolved mystery.

My mother's family are cousins of the O'Donnells. We have our family oral traditions about it all. My dad's family are relatives of the O'Neills and O'Dochertaighs. My ancestor was dubbed a Spanish Viscount and landed in Galicia. My family are noted in ancient chronicles of Ireland as being generous patrons of poets and Harpists. It's a fond topic.
