Had planned to bring a drone to NZ during a filming and fishing trip next year. But after reading about how to apply for the DOC permit I won't due to all the hassle. It seems almost impossible to even understand what you're applying for. Even harder to know before the trip where you want to fly and apply for that area. I understand the need to limit the amount of drones in parks, but all this trouble to try to play by the rules?

So this is how the local council act. I go there asking for clearance and permission to fly in a certain area. They have no idea what I'm talking about. I explain my limited knowledge of the rules. They still have no idea and go and get others to see if they know. All of the council staff don't know what I am talking about and even say "Just fly it.." So I leave the council and fly anyway....

OMG HAHA. That is so funny. I'm getting a drone soon and I'll probably just end up flying it (I'm in the light blue area), especially if they don't know what we're talking about.

I see, Well it's not really important now anyway, because I see in that recent court case in Christchurch where someone with a Drone was supposed to be too close to a Helicopter that was landing out at Pines Beach He was using the give way rule, but the court ignored it totally and Civil Aviation Authority couldn't even honor it themselves

this was copied from the uk caa, why are we expected to ask every single person for permission if you ask me thats one of the worst rules to have apart from that they seem kinda reasonable

In New Zealand are you allowed to fly a drone in sight at a bike track? its outside near my house and pretty big. Are you even allowed to fly in a park.

Hi Clementine! We've tried to squeeze a lot of information into this short video. We've focused on some of the key rules for flying drones in NZ. Although not specifically mentioning the give way rule, the video does state that you are responsible for avoiding collisions with other aircraft. We hope the short video has been useful!

Now to educate the Agriculture and Recreational Pilots to stay above 500 feet when ferrying. Their days of skimming tree tops are coming to an end, with farmers increasingly using these on a day to day basis as a farm tool.

I woke before 5 one morning to a local top dresser buzzing my house and sheds during his runs dropping the remainder of his super on my roofs. I rung their number and actually got him in the plane. I expressed my dislike and finished with my anti air 12g has slugs....

I know of a park somewheres in Cashmere, Christchurc that I was contemplating on testing my T-Rex 500's FPV rig in. But, according to THIS video's logic, you'd still need to contact the Christchurch City Council for permission to fly there. :( Edit: There's also this, which may be of some use to you: ccc.govt.nz/parks-and-gardens/photography/drones-and-remotely-piloted-aircraft-systems

Bit of an over reaction or another way how to suck money out of our pockets. Lets flip it and do the same for airplanes and helicopters - lets make any pilot to obtain permission if they want to fly over people or property - that would be fair, no? ;)

@Croydon Cumming Don't be so sure Croydon, if you are caught flying a UAV in controlled airspace, without the required authorisation from air traffic control (via the Airshare flight notification process) the penalties are VERY harsh.

The airplanes and copters already have permission. UAV owners likely do not.
