Nystagmus

I was born with congenital nystagmus and can honestly say "It has ruined my life" I did not do well at school because of it, due to not being able to read the blackboard. It hasaffected my ability to find work, and I am not able to drive. And it can lead to socialisolation, because people are frightened by it, concluding you must be on drugs or something. Its often described as "weird eyes" I have had people sitting opposite from me get up and leave, some even burst out laughing as they do so. believe me, it is no laughing matter. I have three brothers, none of which have this condition, and all have done well in life. I suppose I should be grateful, I could have been born blind or something

I Just thought I would mention for those with Nystagmus. I have found that the group of prescribed medicines known as Benzodiazepines really do help in controlling Nystagmus, because they are a Muscle relaxing medication and really do help, at least in my case, to ease the tension on the muscles that control the eyes. Trouble is, most GP's are reluctant to prescribe this type of medication, because they say it is addictive, but then so is alcohol!

It certainly helps if you are lucky enough to get it, or any of the Benzo's such as Valium. But, if you live in the UK like I do, then your chances will be very slim. I am not condoning this use of this medication, but it certainly helped a little in my case. But, I doubt that I won't get it for much longer as my current GP is only working 1 day a week, and will probably be gone before too long.

If you can get Xanax then go for it. As it is grouped in the group of Benzo-diazepines you may not be able to get it, NOT here in the UK, unless you can find a sympathetic doctor, who cares. I did, but not for much longer, as he is now winding down, and very hard to see. It has helped me, not so, for many who could be helped by this. It isnot a "Miracle Cure" be it sure helps.

I have had nystagmus since the day I was born. I have rotary nystagmus. Without glasses, my vision is considered legally blind. With correction, my vision is 20/40 in my right eye, which is my good eye. Very interested to know what the actual underlying cause is.

My son has it and the eye doc suggested hard contacts for him between the summer of 5th and 6th grade for ideal treatment…he didn’t do well that young. He’s 16 now and we are going to do them again. Doc says that having the hard lenses allows him to feel his eyes moving and therefore he can try to train them to stop himself. I did hard contacts with him last year and they weren’t bad at all! Takes a few days to work up to wearing all day. We just didn’t keep up with them, but are going to try again at our annual appt.

I can Voluntarily Nystagmus by slightly crosseyeing one eye then intending a fixation on an object with the straight eye and then I let the brain try to correct both eyes while it notices the cross eye is off but then it breaks the fixation of the straight eye and I run the correction again. This intented glitch hacking the correction sequence is very fast but takes much will power to run while ignoring the secondary sequence which would have corrected the hack. When you stop fixating or stop ignoring the secondary correction, the glitch will stop.

This should be called: "All that you wanted to know about your nystagmus that doctors never bothered telling you about." Both eyes since birth, chronic, left to right, but i can force them to stop by crossing my left eye and keeping right eye fixed. Not a real fix when you want to show credibility to new acquaintances. People often misjudge my character, claiming i'm uninterested, nervous or worse, on drugs. Luckily it can be laughed off with friends, saying things like "is a ghost fucking your nose?" Jovial, truly.

Viha it's actually rather amusing watching parents trying to explain to kids not to stare or ask questions. In my case I happen to have one blind eye. I simply joke with the kids and tell them that I just hurt myself or something, usually a white lie that stops the questions. It makes parents more comfortable knowing you have a sense of humor about things. Even if you are insulted, kids really don't know better, and since I work in hospitality it helps that my guests feel free to ask anything. I once had a kid come and put a sticker on my eyepatch and said thank you before they left for home. I do meet others with nystagmus occasionally and my best advice is to get a sense of humor. It's not something that is going away so we need to get over some insecurity. Being socially awkward and disabled aren't a good combination for success. Anyway that's a little bit I felt like sharing. I wish you a good day or evening, night, morning? Oh you know what I mean.

@@BlindRambler You are so right. A sense of humour is the best way to tell others who may be unsure as to why someone has this problem. Don't let it define you. Your brain is 100% ok, your body is working well, your mouth speaks so what if your eyes aren't perfect. You have your vision.

As a fellow person with nystagmus can I ask in what areas you’ve struggled? Also how old are you? I want to offer some advice if I can, especially if you’re like a teen with it. But I’d like to know what areas you struggle cause we may struggle with different things

@@jbach2002 hey bro, I have nystagmus too. How old are you? I'm 27 Y/O. I have the horizontal one and a involuntary horizontal head movement too, that's make me look like I'm retarded or something, well, that's the people say at my back frequently. but I had no cognitive problems. Even I'm smarter than these people but, its uncomfortable the way in that they see me when I do my work. I wish to know if you some medical prescription or a tip for me. Thanks

@@YoshieDub I feel you, that’s the same kind I have. I don’t know what causes it though. And same, I have zero cognitive issues but I’m socially awkward paired my nystagmus. Had people ask if I’m autistic, or talk to me extremely condescendingly. Drives me crazy. Anyway, I’m 20. I had corrective surgery at the children’s hospital in Akron, Ohio when I was 2. It reduced my eye movement to where I can read and drive, granted neither is all that easy. From what I know, it’s never correctable. Even after my surgery I need glasses, and even with glasses I can only see at 20/70. Thankful knowing it could’ve been worse though. If you haven’t had surgery, it’s always worth looking into. If your American or able to go to the US, they do it at different places. It’s done in the UK too. Not sure about other countries. A muscle relaxer called Baclofen helps reduce eye movement drastically. Contacts can restrict eye movement so can work better than glasses. Tips… growing up I learned to let nystagmus be apart of me but not let it be me. I’ve come to enjoy when people ask about my eyes because I can explain why they move, it’s something unique about me. Often when people have some condition, any condition really, they make it their whole personality. It’s what defines them most. And they blame everything on it. I don’t let myself do that. I have nystagmus but I am not nystagmus. It’s just a part of me. Just learning to look at it that way has helped my confidence a lot. Other than that, blue light glasses are amazing. Give your eyes time to rest when they get tired. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you can’t read something, most people are more than understanding. I understand you’re a few years older than me so it’s quite possible you have all this figured out by now. If not, I hope something here can help.
