The director of "The Red-Headed Pigeon" episode of ABC-TV's "NYPD" series from early 1968 is actor Lawrence Dobkin, better known as "Dutch Schultz" from episodes of another classic ABC series, "THE UNTOUCHABLES" (1959-1963) Lawrence Dobkin was also the director of the classic "STAR TREK" episode, "Charlie X" in 1966.

Thanks very much for posting-commercials and all. I dig crime shows filmed on locations in NYC. This one really captured the grime of 1960s New York. I remember seeing this show when it was first on, or at least in early syndication, and even then it looked grainy, as if it was filmed in Super 8. This story, like others in the series, is a marvel of concision, with tension, some character development, and action all within a 30 minute less commercials (and less time for a next week’s episode teaser) timeframe. The centerpiece of this episode-the relationship between the reliably excellent Jack Warden and the young woman cop-nicely nuanced for the time, and charming. Even as he maintains a no-nonsense cop manner, his protectiveness goes beyond looking out for one’s fellow officer, to a fatherliness. The adorable young policewoman seems both to seek out action and prove herself as a junior cop might and to show the paternal Jack Warden her independence. Of course, this sort of story element would never fly on TV today.

CBS owns the rights to this 1967-1969 ABC series that was produced by the now-defunct Talent Associates ("HE & SHE", "EAST SIDE/WEST SIDE", and "GET SMART!") by founder, David Susskind. It was officially released in TV syndication in 1970 by what used to be ABC Films, which later became Worldvision Enterprises in 1973, which was owned by Taft Broadcasting, and Spelling Entertainment, but was sold to Viacom in 2000, making these 49 produced episodes the property of CBS Media Ventures, formerly CBS TV Distribution.
