The Strategic Response Group (SRG) is a rapid reaction force of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) tasked with immediate intervention duties during periods of civil unrest, terrorist incidents, or other citywide emergencies. It was established in 2015.

It's somewhat rare to film these vehicles responding - but very common to see them patrolling.

Note the unmarked command unit - most likely federal law enforcement.

It's very indeed a federal law enforcement vehicle, as you can see the license plate on that unit says US Government.

Ahaaaa I do like to keep people waiting for the good stuff ;) And oh boy there's LOADS more than this, way cooler stuff too! I know right, SRG was formed when Explorers became mainstream police cars, so like 99% of their vehicles are Ford Explorers. You aint seen an overdose of Ford Explorer until you seen SRG 1's base on 42nd - I think I counted 36 Explorers parked up all the way down the entire block of the street from 10th Ave to 11th Ave, on both sides! And there's several other SRG divisions in the NYPD's area too.

Those bulletproof window inserts must be new depts near me have them in most of there explorer fleet they seem like they would be not effective since a bullet can go through a windshield or even the back glass idk seems like a waste of tax dollars

Yeah the NYPD started getting them fitted in 2017 as well as bullet proof plating in the doors. A lot of these vehicles are older than 2017 and have had them fitted. But like you said there's still the windshield and rear. Maybe they're bulletproof as well, all though doesn't look it. Still it'd provide some protection from side fire.

@@CobraEmergencyNorthAmerica Perhaps the idea is to provide a bulletproof viewport and to allow the officer to use the door as cover where traditionally you would want to avoid this entirely. That way you can hide behind a door instead of having to use the entire vehicle or the engine block.

mtr71875 The bullet proof side window and door serves as a bulletproof barricade when the officer is involved in an active shooting. He or she will open the door and use it as cover and protection
