Fantastic film, loved the variety that they had running during this gala. This is a line I've been meaning to go back to for years now but have never had the opportunity. Looks like the weather was on your side throughout which made it all the more enjoyable.

Terrific video and account of a very enjoyable day for all those who were lucky enough to have attended, but the best part of this stream was listening to the wonderful sounds generated.

Interesting footage, traction combinations and glad the weather was kind to the event. One niggle.... what is with drivers these days that they cannot depart a station without massive exhausts of steam from every port! Not only does it spoil the departure for onlookers, but they obscure their own vision which is a H&S issue. There is a limited amount of moving image footage from BR steam days, but such exhibitions of wasteful use of steam would have been frowned upon by management, not to mention the poor fireman and all his hard work in steam raising.

The reason for all the steam from the front on departure is this. Those engines will have come off shed, and will still have a small amount of water in the cylinders. The draincocks are open on departure to prevent any damage occuring to the locos cylinders. While it's not great for the public as it obscures their view, it is much safer for the loco and drivers do it to prevent damage. Hope this explains the reason

Where does the steam under the passenger carriages come from, the loco? And I guess it’s for heating?

Couldn’t get there this year so thank you for sharing. Very interested to know what camera and tripod head you are using as the panning round was very smooth. Also what software do you use to compile. Hope you don’t mind me asking.

They vary a lot. Some have short platforms that can only accommodate 5 (e.g. the Great Central, Leicester to Loughborough at Ropley & Rothley), but others can handle 8 (e.g. West Somerset, Gloucester & Warwickshire).
