NYC Walk : Astoria, Queens via 30th Ave, Steinway Street, & Broadway in September 2022
Ойын-сауық
It's been awhile since I visited Astoria, Queens. My home neighborhood has seen a lot of changes. Several businesses have closed down and many have expanded into new spaces. As I expected, the fastest changing streets of Astoria now have new businesses, buildings have been torn down, and activity has picked up.

Nice to see you showcasing your hometown again, AK! It's good to know many of the businesses are still operating, but it's also sad to hear how some old businesses have closed. You were even recognized three different times on your first day back, so awesome! 😃 Thank you for sharing this walk in Astoria, AK! 🤗 BTW, I forgot to mention on your 09/09/22 livestream that you wore the flannel back to NYC! 🤣
WOW. changes galore. I had an uncle that lived at 30-91 Crescent St Many years ago. I left thd City in 1984. I live vicariously thru other New Yorkers like you that do these videos. Keep em coming

Biscotti is basically a very hard Italian cookie served with coffee. They look like a little slice of Italian bread, they are not round like a normal cookie. They are actually very common in Italian restaurants.
I left Astoria in 1991 and it's funny how different it is but still the same. I can recall what business was there in the 90s... I used to work at an electronics store called Bright Buyers on the corner of 33rd St and 30th Ave. There were some hard times and yet I wouldn't trade them for the world.
Astoria is awesome! Thanks for the walk AK!
The dress shop between 36 and 37th on Broadway was a Woolworth 5& 10 store. I remember going n there as a kid and I can still hear the wood floor boards creaking under my feet. Dave's Shoes on 35th and Broadway has been a shoe store at that location since at least the 60's- used to go there to buy my PF Flyers.
AK back in NYC

Thank you for this. I have not been back in years. It was nice for me to see things, feel nostalgic and reminisce.
Nice walkthrough, I can see the appeal of this neighborhood based on the interactions and the general vibe captured in the video, also seeing you have moments with residents of that community. Will be out that way tomorrow actually from Washington Heights.

If I remember correctly, Rudy's was not a hobby shop in the 60s but an old fashioned soda fountain shop. I went to school with his daughter. Ocean fish was there in the 60s also.
On broadway Dave’s shoes was there when I was a kid, I am 79 now good to see stores last I think the broadway silk store is still there too.

I loved this walk especially AK, it took me back to the little town I grew up in here in MI and the streets downtown in the 1950's~ The sights and sounds were wonderful and you could almost smell the aromas of the fruit and veggie markets! Thank you for sharing your homecoming insights with us~
TRIVIA- on Broadway and 37th ST where you comment about the Casa de Sabor- in that building on one of the upper floors the process of xerography was discovered by Chester Carlson. The first Xerograph he made said "10-22-38 Astoria". There was a plaque on the building in the 60's commemorating the event. There was a bar at street level for years.

EXCELLENT !!!! THIS VIDEO BRINGS BACK GREAT MEMORIES !!!! I USED TO WORK NEARBY THIS AREA A FEW YEARS AGO . I LOVE "GREEN ORGANICS" !!!! THE STEINWAY STREET AREA IS GREAT !!!! I MISS "POPEYES" , "SUBWAYS" "VITAMIN SHOP", "NOBODY BEATS THE WIZ", THE GIANT TWO LEVEL "BURGER kING" THE PHARMACY ACROSS FROM THE "CHASE" BANK, THERE WAS A GREAT CHINESE RESTARAUNT, AND "FYE" WHERE I WOULD BUY MY DVD MOVIES AND MY CD MUSIC AND CASSETTE TAPES !!!! I ALSO NOTICE THE "7/ELEVEN" IS GONE NEAR MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL !!!! I LOVE THE "HAPPY" CHINESE RESTARAUNT !!!! BUT I ALSO NOTICE THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL DELI'S AND RESTARAUNTS THAT HAVE CLOSED !!!!....BY THE WAY, COULD YOU PLEASE DO NEW VIDEOS OF THE UPCOMING "SAN GENARRO" FOOD FESTIVAL IN LITTLE ITALY AND THE SHOPPING AREA ON JAMAICA AVENUE CLOSE TO THE MOVIE THEATER ? THANK YOU !!!!
The new Mexican place on the corner along 30 Ave was a longtime jewelry store. One guy selling vintage-y jewelry for all the 40 years I've lived on 30 Ave. I've forgotten his name.
Maybe this is a good sign A.K. I'm just seeing this video and I just got an email to interview for a position in one of the District Attorney's Offices. Won't say which one, LOL. I pray I get it. I'm so ready to come back home. I've been out of NYC for 6 years now, living in the Carolinas and I've had enough. My parents passed and I couldn't get back there in 2020. Been up there last March for a another family funeral unfortunately, my 41 year old nephew, kidney failure and heart attack, smh. I'm born and raised from Queens. When I come back I will probably move to Fresh Meadows, if not back to Nassau County. Maybe I should film the move back. Love ya AK! You helped me stay sane watching your videos even when you went to Miami. But seeing NYC keeps me happy and hopeful. 💕💕💕💕

The actor Christopher Walken's dad had his bakery on Broadway just past the el next to where Parisi's bakery is now.
When you walked past 34th street and 30th AVE ( Grand Ave)- that area appeared on the documentary "The Human Family Tree" about human genealogy and shared genetics. They commented that Astoria was one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the country.
I used to live a few blocks away between 2004 and 2006. Lots of changes....
