Beautiful but needs a little warmth. Very white, just needs some warm colors to make it feel more like a home and less like a showpiece.

Agreed. Some of that is the staging. They chose all white and neutral colored rugs, sofas and chairs. But the white cabinets, white floors and while shelves everywhere are too much. But that’s all the rage right now. Watch any home renovation show and that’s what you’ll see.

Agreed! Like the commenter above said a lot of that is staging. But they’ve gone for the cool minimalist look of the 2010’s with lots of white and grey which is quickly going out of style in favour of a warmer minimalism that embraces warm neutrals and natural materials.

“Warmth”? The decor u are likely just the opposite what the “trend” is right now, hence the home is staged thusly. Also, to sell a home you’d never use “warm colors” as that is subjective & the potential is easier seen w/a neutral tone/style. A far bigger “hell no is the hall immediately past the reception room. The dining room & library (together?!?) all standing where the ‘great hall’ should be. Nothing says blue blood dinner with the home staircase bumping into you OR you bumping into a wall of books & a few fall on you. Peasant! Alva Vanderbilt would roll over in her grave. P.S. ALL the finest Homs have the kitchen on the lower/ground level. Stunning detail in that home tho. Very tony.

@@waitaminute2015 true. I knew a couple who bought a luxury flat that had just been renovated only to gut it and redo everything. They were literally ripping out marble and luxury fittings that had only been installed a few months prior!

I wonder what's under all that white paint! It had to be natural wood...which I would have liked more than all the white

I agree but I think it made the rooms look dark since the lot doesn’t seem to be really wide, so all that white paint is needed to reflect the light from the outside as much as possible.

@@basiliskos119 Get over the concept of an interior being too dark. The generic white look is nothing compared to the character of fine wood paneling.

This trio of houses on the corner across from Central Park are wonderful to look at but they are directly over the subway. During the several decades I lived nearby, the noise and vibration always seemed to result in scaffolding and constant construction/renovation. All three townhouses were often vacant for long stretches. A luxurious change-up from the apartments that line the street, but I'd do some real homework before considering any of them.

'Modernized' meaning we paint everything white and destroy the natural character of the woodwork.

many of these prewar townhouses or apartmnts dont have the huge windows so common nowadays, so they can feel quite dark and cavernous.I guess the white is intended to make them feel more airy and cheerful...and even modern.

A friend of mine installed an elevator in his $7 million house in Seattle. I was surprised the elevator was $10,000 a floor which is a good price. What if you get stuck in your private elevator? Who could help you? My friend’s elevator doesn’t come with a phone.

The bay window in the bedroom needed Windex, what a glaring oversight in showing a view.

I feel sure that the interior was originally natural wood. Painting everything white is far from "restoring" the house, more like remodeling.

Recommendation from an architecture lover: spend more camera time on the architectural features (especially the original) than on the furniture and “tour guide.” Slow down the camera movements so the viewers can actually savor the beautiful details.

I grew up with this building. From my preschool years I had always felt the place to be bloody evil. Each summer there seemed to be an incident. One year I found a motorcycle Tipped over with a puddle of gas at the base of the stairs. There was a man passed out near it. I called the police because it was a fire hazard. Late one summer night I saw one of the residents standing out front dressed in a robe. He was exposing himself to unseen men across the avenue. Next there actually was a headline making fire that had all of CPW blocked off. It gutted the building so I thought that's the end of this malign presence. Instead it rose from the dead and was renovated. Curious, I went for the first time in my life to peek in the window. It was spotless and well appointed but had all the cheer of an upscale funeral home. I saw some name plates; all long Russian names doubtless venerable for the past thousand years. House was empty but lit.I did have a laugh as my fancy ran way with me. With my luck it's an old, noble family of Russian vampires and they are all out hunting for the night, I mused. I did look up some of its history. It seems to be one of the oldest on UWS. It was built back in 1888, if I recall. The same year as Jack the Ripper and the Great Blizzard. The Ardsley nearby goes back to at least 1902 as I saw an old science book whose author used that date and address in his preface. The Dakota goes back to 1879. The Eldorado dates back to 1933. Most CPW buildings are pre war, meaning in between world wars 2 and 1, making them very prized for their antiquated features like high ceilings.

I had rented a small room on the 3rd floor back in 1986 to 1987 before the fire. Back then the house was crazy. However, there was so much character to the physical building. I'm not impress with the renovations. You can hear the C train pass by the house at night.

I agree that the location is great. For me some of that white would have to go as it is returned back to the natural wood coloring. The library would be the first thing I would change back to a natural wood finish instead of that painted white finish.

Real estate agents should be reminded that they jeopardize their real estate license if they knowingly lie, falsify or hide pertinent structural information concerning a property listing from perspective buyers!

I'm a little strange but I have always been obsessed with the year a house, condo or even apartment was built

This house was not easy to renovate, even though it is grandiose, it is still pretty much a railroad flat layout, This type of layout often lacks privacy since you may need to go through several rooms before you get where to want to go. I love that they kept it light and clean looking,

The single biggest virtue I tried to give our daughter, and now granddaughters, is confidence. I tried to do the same with our sons and grandsons but it seems to me that females might need more help in self-assurance?

Props to the owners for retaining so much of the original architectural details. It'd be refreshing, however, if these updated properties restored the original glory of their "bones" alongside incorporating some truly striking contemporary elements. (Echoes of said already being suggested by the approach to the spa.) Lazily drowning original millwork in the ubiquitous "minimalist whitewash" suffocates its figuring, warmth and glory.

@@paulaltman9751 "Modern" for these types of remodels normally means ripping out the original oak or walnut millwork and replacing it with cheap pine that's painted white (but then tacking on a 2X selling multiple).

What an absolute tragedy. Even if this house was renovated from complete gut due to a fire, all that wood they brought in painted white with a shine that looks dipped in plastic is just horrible. Some white here and there...yes...but the whole place! The only part that looked cozy and inviting was the first outdoor space. Poor house!

I liked the home itself but would had added in a bit more high end modern furniture to the mix. Not a fan of tufted furniture. Would need a maid to keep the dust/dirt out of it. I'm sure you could afford one if you could afford to live there. Did find some of the stuff on their site so some staging? Anyways, the home itself is stunning, imo.

Absolutely criminal to take that historic building and paint everything white. The woodwork is doubtless top quality, but it had to be covered up in the name of Today's Living. It will cost tens of thousands to strip that off and reveal the tiger oak. I hope some rich person with better taste does a proper historic renovation to fix this damage.

At least they didn't paint every room pale gray with white trim, as is the automatic go to color for the early 21st Century. I restored a house built in the 1920's, and everyone suggested gray with white trim for every room. Instead, my painter scraped down to find the original 1920's colors, and that is what we went with. When I showed the restoration job, everyone asked why not gray with white trim........!

@@andythompson6874 When I scraped all the layers of paneling, wallpaper and paint from the plaster walls of my turn-of-the-century house I discovered some pretty hideous colors! The living room (parlor) was pumpkin orange with a goldenrod yellow ceiling, and the dining room was fire-engine red with a pepto pink ceiling. These rooms open into each other! I love color, but this was a bit much. Wish I could have preserved the layer of wallpaper that was immediately over the paint, though. It was luscious Arts & Crafts vintage--acanthus leaves and flowers. But sadly, most had rotted away.

That house deserves the less copycat approach.. more creative design focus that is not a mid-century vibe would have looked better., there are some amazing artisan glass artists in America that would have created a timeless elegance -For that price point and the beauty of this home, it's very predictable and will not age as beautifully as the house and its bones. I'm not at all a Grinch, I am only voicing an opinion that is different from yours.

I don't think it's the lighting as much as the fact that everything is white. Also, showing a house only during the day never gives you a sense of what it will look like at night. I certainly hope everything is on dimmer switches ;o)
