@@DaveDel So freaking true, let's be honest it's usually people that don't come from that environment that tend to say these things... Me and my brother were raised in the same hood, we were raised by an extremely strict father with a 3rd grade education because he left school to work and help his mother raise his 7 siblings. When he was married to my mother he worked 2 jobs persistently and barely slept. She left us when me and my brother were toddlers he stepped up with no help from her... He was the perfect example of what a hard working man with outstanding morals and loyalty looks like... My brother still hung with the wrong crowd and got into things he shouldn't have, I on the other hand listened to my daddy because I wanted to get out of there. I wanted to travel and experience different things because I already knew everything the hood had to offer... Adults and kids fighting and getting killed over mediocre things that don't have any real value. Never going out after dark because the crack epidemic was raging back then and they would literally rob a kid, and yes I was robbed by a crack for subway 12" sandwich and the change that couldn't be more than $5.... I've seen friends die because they were just walking to the store at the wrong time. Having to hit the floor when there shooting outside because strays have no name, like my pops always said... I'm blessed that I had him to light my path all the way out of that dark hell hole.... I'm not trashing anyone, I'm just giving you a different perspective....

The city failed the teens?! No, it's the parents. It's always the parents.

This isn't Edward it's his wife Jess I came across this and I wanted to put my 2 cents in... Of course some parents are horrible, some are to young some are just not prepared, but get pregnant anyway... That's completely on them because we now have so many kinds of contraceptives that if you get knocked up it was a conscious choice... Some have no examples of what good parenting actually is... So they try to figure it out as they go along...Not the best way to parent children. Also why doesn't anyone talk about the toxic environment New York City hoods breed, literally... My brother and I had the best DAD ever... He only had a 2nd grade education because he chose to work to help his family survive... He came from Puerto Rico at 16 and by 22 he had brought most of his siblings with him... He didn't marry until he was 32 and he had 2 jobs to provide for us and my mother, and barely slept. My mother left him and us when my brother was 7 and I was 4 and my pops handled it like a soldier, like the great man he was. Before she left she emptied there safe deposit box and cleared the accounts. She didn't want my father to get anything not even us. So she claimed domestic violence and said he was crazy and even though the man didn't even have a parking ticket he was arrested and then sent to Bellvue Hosp nut house. She would leave us alone for days starving and we couldn't reach the top lock or twist it because it was 1 of those locks that when you twist it pushes a long bar across both sides of the door and the frame. When my father finally got released she fought not to let us go. My father went home to PR to see his mother and clear his head and then somebody let him know we were always alone and not being fed or bathed. He reached out to my mothers father and explained the situation and that he didn't have funds to get back home. My grandfather immediately bought him a flight, picked him up at JFK and gave him enough money to find a place and fight for custody. I swear till this day hearing my Pops call me through that front window was one of the happiest days of my life and then he got a latter and got us out. When he called the police to tell them his kids had been alone for days and hadn't eaten either, the officer told him to put us back in the home wait and then call the police and report everything. A month later we were living with Pops... I loved that man to death. He was hard working, honest, respectful, humble, loyal and extremely strict... He raised us both the same in the South Bronx and gave us great advice but my brother at some point stopped listening and preferred the street stuff so he ended up in jail... I on the other hand wanted to know what else existed outside this Dark Hell Hole because I was intrigued by books I read and by the teachers of different cultures that I've had... I was always watching everything and everybody, and knew I had to get out of here before I become a statistic, like so many others. Some people try there entire life but never make it out.... I did make it out and I'm actually really proud of where I come from.. It showed me realistic survival skills. Always be alert of your surroundings because bad things happen in a second, when you get a gut feeling listen to it because your body will feel the danger before you do. Treat everyone with respect and you'll get it back and live longer... Don't take anything from anyone because there's no true favors in the hood. Nobody, I mean nobody does anything for free without expecting something in return. That's part of growing up in the hood right after the Bronx was burning in the 70's and during the crack epidemic in the 80's and during the 90's persistent poverty, limited job opportunities and extremely high crime rates, somehow some people still persevered... This most people's lives in the city... Remember, this is where THE X MARKS THE SPOT...... THE BRONX

Thats why when i see many black and Latino young men and women that run away abd come thru times sguare i help them with listening ear food give them work at my nyc bussiness i helpnthem in anyway i can; as i have been for many year's; these are our kids too as a black man i help whenever i can all they need is guidedance and men to help put guidence in their minds and higher goals.i still do when ever they come thru times sguare where i work my bussiness thisbis the way we will keep the prisons empty and the colleges full and the grace yards empty!!!!!!!
