Una tendenza di oggi nei quadri è l horror vacui , riempire la tela senza lasciare un briciolo di spazio vuoto.

Funny. I have Cecily Brown’s book. I used to love her work. I’ve seen her paintings in museums. But the more I view her paintings, the less I see. I’ve finally reached the conclusion that the work is overrated. Weird that the more I look at Vuillard, the more I am astounded at how good he is. Many painters just do not pass the test of time.

She's very good at drawing figures and composing them, and it is a cool idea to aim for the best of both worlds, the popularity of expressive colorful abstraction and figures, maybe she thinks less messily painted figurative paintings would be boring, but I agree vuilliard proves they don't have to be, colors, composition, painterlyness, touch, taste, etc. Before I even knew about his popular cult acclaim I found myself attracted to some paintings of his I saw. Cecily Browns drawings stood out to me, nudes and erotic stuff if I recall. Does she stress about the tedium of more semi accurately painting a figurative painting, so takes delight in the freedom of color and mark placement. Many of her paintings do have a prettyness, and powerful energeticness and I'm sure could be more well read and appreciated in person. Seems like she gives the viewer some game like effort in finding the figures and reading the painting, she is like de Kooning and Jackson Pollock plus figures, maybe evolved version with the abundance of detail of lines and colors. And her figures are a kind of mystery, there is a magic eye test rorchak parradellia thing going on, where she conjures these human visions up in this blurry haze, and to magically capture them amidst all the chaotic energy maybe gives them more life and less boredom, let's your mind fill in some blanks and work for the figure, instead of given a perfect simple exactness. I had to refresh myself with some of her other works and recalled another thought I've had of her of how great, rare and special a figure painter she is. I think maybe Vuilliard is like Chopin and Cecily Brown like Beethoven maybe. A still non frenetic well defined image is claustraphobic in the fast paced energetic age, there needs to be blur and the suggestion of motion, to keep one charged and buzzing, jest or something, but I wonder what more purely purely figurative paintings would be like from her, and maybe we get the answer in her earlier drawings, and maybe if painted would feel lifeless and dull in comparison. Though I don't know, I think her powers, visions, technical abilities are strong enough to make as such worthy pictures, it may be less fun and rewarding for her, as her style is very adventure and playful. What do you think she could do differently to make some paintings that you would love?
