    Im a competitive player, and latency is the most important thing to me and most everyone I know. I understand its fairly irrelevant for most players, but it would be nice to see latency metrics in your optimizing guides, even for single player games. A lot of us like to keep settings on high for single player content, but dont want to destroy our muscle memory when we come back to compete. In that way, measurements like this for all games are incredibly important. I wish that tool was free to buy so we wouldnt have to rely on you to do these measurements

    So after watching the video I am left wondering if frame times increase when using reflex. You would need per frame render times to look at this properly though and I know this isn't something you guys do. Plus there would be a question of if there is more of a delay between a game engine getting information from a packet and when that gets displayed. That sounds really hard to test. So while I feel this is questionable with online competitive titles I bet this feels nice if you're playing a single player game that is demanding and running poorly because it would increase responsiveness.

    I think Radeon Anti-Lag is the same as Nvidia's Low Latency Mode, so a driver-level frame priority feature. Nvidia Reflex is different in that it requires full cooperation from the game engine to minimize latency even further.

    For competitive FPS, you wouldn't be playing at 4K because even with DLSS, you would want a lower resolution and higher FPS and the detail turned down as much as you can handle to minimize any rendering delays but still show what is essential to see (e.g. enabling higher details on shadows so you can see your opponents shadow better to give you a heads up on their location). And at lower resolutions, DLSS doesn't help so much and DLSS does add some minor overhead as it has to upscale the image, so it wouldn't be ideal for competitive FPS.

  • @mjc0961

    @mjc0961

    @@anotherfinesith288 Yep. So many people think DLSS is this magic "free fps" toggle. It's so annoying. DLSS is just an upscaling technique. Don't need it. You can turn the resolution down yourself. DLSS doesn't deserve any of this hype.

    How would the latency outcome change if I put in a better CPU that instead of running my gpu at 80% in a game would run it at 100%? For example, it gets from 70 fps -> 80 fps. Is the reflex induced latency then significantly lower say 100ms -> 50ms even though without reflex it would not be much of a difference?

    I think it would be really interesting to test Nvidia Reflex against Battle(non)sense's finding that going just slightly under 100% GPU usage can massively improve input latency. Nvidia Reflex arguably still gives Nvidia GPUs an edge over Radeon in that Reflex will allow you to use 100% of your GPU and still get latency improvements. But for Radeon users, it would be interesting to see if capping GPU usage to just 95-98% can yield similar latency numbers to Reflex.

    Nvidia reflex is nothing you couldn't already do yourself by allowing for 10% overhead buffer in games meaning adjust your settings ingame to allow for 90% GPU usage, if you hit 99% usage you get more delay as the render queue fills up. Reflex is slightly better since its doing it at the driver level so you get less GPU resources wasted and its good for lazy people who can't be bothered to do their own tuning.

    I just realised halfway through the video that the performance metrics regarding latency were originally implemented in doom 2016 and now in doom eternal.

    I appreciate that you took a look at both features from a practical viewpoint, not just a technical viewpoint. It makes sense that Nvidia or AMD can't really do much more in CPU bound scenarios. This does really highlight the importance of APIs like Vulkan, well written game engines like idTech and the work developers put into optimising their games; that's where you sometimes see one game stand out either positively or negatively.

    I haven't watched this video but I wanted to mention this before I forgot. I am assuming this is a frame rendering delay technique where frames try to wait for input from the user before getting started......but in an online competitive game(where I assume they're saying this is great) wouldn't it also delay the time it takes for you to actually see what's happening? Like the game engine gets info that Bob came around the corner, but it won't render that frame as quickly as it could because it's waiting for user input. So yeah, maybe from the time it takes for the human to see someone to being able to shoot them it's quicker, but if you add in the time the frame with Bob in it was delayed is it still better? Anyways going to watch the video and see what you guys talk about.

    That mustache is growing into something absolutely glorious, I'm pretty jealous of it tbh. But could it be that the ends are slightly uneven? Something feels a bit off balance. I think this mustache deserves a trip to a barber for absolute studliness.
