    At the end of the video I said $250 would make the RTX 4060 'a great buy'. I'd like to retract that. Rather $250 makes it worth considering, $200 or less would make it a great buy.

    You are right, history is cyclical and now we are seeing exactly the same repetition of the 2000 series after the mining boom. There is every reason to believe that at the end of autumn we will still be shown an updated series with the addition "super" where, by analogy with the 2000 series, everything will fall into place and the lineup will move one point while maintaining prices.

    In a nutshell, the 4060 is a notebook GPU, dressed up in a desktop cooler so they can apply a higher clock frequency. It's designed to perform somewhere between a 3060 and a 3060Ti, while costing nVidia less to produce than either of those. The product is all about optimizing nVidia's mainstream profit margins.

    I only use the nvidia brand because amd literally only runs at half the speed for ai without mainstream optimization support for features such as xformers. (Ex: 10-27 steps/second on 250-1000$ nvidia cards, vs 1000$ for 10 steps/second on a 1000$ 7900xtx card.) That said, far from buying into the amd hate, i wish i could buy the vram amounts that amd offers. Nvidia actively holds the ai market hostage with cuda software, YET 8 gb for 300-700R cards is not enough for the models you want to run while the amd cards give 12-16 gb. The problem is they don't have the software to be utilized. And we don't talk about 0.5 step/s intel. Literally in 20x slower ai driver hell even though they have 16 gb cards at very good prices. Nvidia is like a shitty shoe manufacturer who deliberately tapes bricks to their shoes, to make you buy shoes with *slightly* smaller bricks released each year. They could fucking make a 32 gb vram card for just 100$ more on direct vram costs (27$ for 8 gb vram chips at industry price).. Yet they would rather sell you a 700$ gpu with only 8 gb vram that already can't keep up with a 1000-2000$ computer for a 399$ ps5.. They deliberately handicap their models for planned obsolence. Yet because ai is expensive and focus is spent on the hardware 90% of people have, and cuda/tensor cores so important to ai, you're forced to buy nvidia for ai while they literally handicap their models just to force a higher cost 12-16 gb 1000$ card when amd has 16-24 gb vram on their 500-1000$ models.. Sure a shame all that wonderful vram only gets used at 1/3rd the speed with how expensive ai is.

    Nvidia ignores raster performance, even though that's what 99.9% of games rely on, and only focus on RT + DLSS performance. They're also treating DLSS 3 frame gen like real performance and are saying "Up to 2-3x the performance of [insert older card here]!"

  • @mapesdhs597

    @mapesdhs597

    Жыл бұрын

    It would be more accurate to say that the raster increases have been so bad because these are not gaming GPU designs anymore and haven't been since Fermi; they are compute designs for Enterprise, the gaming products are just the table scraps. RT/DLSS was just a way of doing something with silicon that was going to be on the die anyway, in a manner that allowed them to cover up for the poor raster gains, something made very clear by Turing. Worse, it isn't even a particularly good implementation of RT either. I was going to say all this tomfoolery by NVIDIA won't stop until gamers let these cards rot on shelves, but now I wonder if NVIDIA just doesn't much care either way, as their sales & margin sights refocus on AI markets, the latest rapidly growing subsection of Enterprise. In theory this should be an opporunity for competition, but AMD is riding the same Enterprise/compute/high-margin bandwagon, they're content by their own admission to just slot inbetween whatever NVIDIA is doing. Some have high hopes that Intel can shake things up; well, maybe, but if so then it's still going to take a long time for that to happen, the NVIDIA mindshare is very strong. I know someone who didn't realise AIB cards even existed, to the extent that he couldn't find his preferred "NVIDIA" card because all he could see on the boxes was MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte, etc. :D

    @@damara2268 The basic design had already become compute-heavy long before Pascal. What happened after Fermi was NVIDIA crippled FP64 to push pro users away from consumer cards, though of course many pro tasks don't need it (such as the RT3D function used in After Effects back then). Don't confuse Pascal with being in any way a gaming oriented card just because NVIDIA made it by accident more powerful than it needed to be, hence why it's still popular today. This btw is why after Pascal the NVEnc abilities in these consumer products were also scaled back, NVIDIA halved the number of chips on the die. It's also why NVIDIA wanted to kill off SLI, prevent gamers from being able to use two lesser models to achieve the performance of an upper tier SKU (the narrative now is that SLI was terrible, but that's utter nonsense, it actually worked very well for many years, long before anyone gave a fig about frame times). I personally saw from extensive testing how driver changes deliberately ruined SLI performance, especially for older titles. Pro cards do have other features not supported by consumer cards at all, such as a full speed PCIe return path, better cache designs and ECC (also differently optimised drivers such as better AA line drawing support), which is why for some tasks consumer cards cannot be used at all (such as financial transaction processing), but without a doubt Fermi was the turning point in where the tech was heading. It's not the addition of Tensor cores which makes these compute designs; they were already compute-focused long before Tensor tech came along. One can get a better idea of how all this changed over time by looking at the history and evolution of the Titan vs. x80 Ti models, from Maxwell through to Pascal, a constant dance of tempting gamers to buy something at ever inflated pricing which only a short while later gets outdated by a faster model with half the VRAM, a double whammy of marketing (the latter having less longevity of course), with the Titan variants for Pascal completely breaking the original basis for the split in SKUs (Titan X wasn't a full die, yet cost vastly more vs. the 1080 Ti for only a tiny VRAM gain despite having the same shader count).

Even 50 bucks less is way too much of an ask. It's abominable that AMD even dares to ask 249 for it. It needs to be below 200, if 4060 is 299. And because they chose that node for the 4090, everything else has to follow Currently Nvidia doesnt *want* high sales. They want high margins. Thats because they make most profit with professional GPUs and due to the AI boom these are at very high demand. So, instead of selling small margin consumer GPUs, they overprice these GPUs and focus the production on the professional cards. Out of a business view, this move is a smart one. Because AMD told TSMC to run full steam ahead on production of Navi 22. Then the crypto crash happened followed by the post pandemic recession followed by the knock-on effects of Russia's inhumane stupidity, and woopsie, the market tanked. But the problem is that the lead time of N6/N7 wafers is 5 months. I shit you not. It takes 5 months from wafer start to packaged silicon. So from the time AMD pulled the emergency brake until crypto-level-volume stopped pouring in was 5 months. What I don't get is why AMD even bothered with the 7600 when they're sitting on mountains of Navi 22 and Navi 23 silicon that needs to be palmed off first. They're clearly working their way through Navi 21 stock, as those aren't nearly as universally available anymore. But 22/23 is available in abundance, and will clearly be so for a while to come. If AMD had just waited a longer, and then given the 7600 16GB (clam-shell configuration like the 3090/4090), they could have made a compelling case.

The only people gaming at that resolution are those working with ultra high framerates, or those very little cash to spend at all (and very hard up indeed considering how little a decent 1440/165hz display can be had for these days, I picked up a S2721DGF for $250 USD on a sale).
