Nutfield and Raymond Making the Hawkesbury Turn - Episode 73

Nutfield and Raymond making the Hawkesbury turn
Two historic narrowboats Nutfield and the butty Raymond attempt to make the Hawkesbury turn. For crew Nick and Frankie it’s the first time they tried this difficult manoeuvre with a motor and butty pair. Let’s see how they get on.

Been there, done that. Back in the late 70s with my own boat "Beech", don't remember what the butty was. It was normally paired with another motor. Worked as camping boats at the time. I'm sure the first shots showed the pair working in the opposite direction.

Hi Andrew update , I went through Bradford on Avon lock and I'moored up a couple of mile away from the lock next to the turning point and my tutor drove the boat into the lock while I operated the lock and it seemed fairly simple but very heavy work also in regards to the Bradford on Avon lock it really doesn't help that I do not like heights but other than that it was fine

Good to see you again my friend. Water is all solid again here though the temps have been warm for here hanging around -6 to -7C for a couple months. the last couple weeks at -12 C my little finger is starting to heal. decided to learn how to chord on a piano. Makes the finger move and doesn't take as much strength as holding done guitar strings. Hope you are both well.

Hi Skip, great news about your finger, and hopefully playing the piano will eventually strengthen it enough to play guitar. Yeah we're both well, but have been frozen in for the last week. Ice finally cleared here this morning so we could move to fill up with water. Only got down to -5 though. All the best A&V

I’m one of your long time subscribers and I was looking for the vlog you did on the canal murder of a woman by boatman back in the 1800’s. I can’t seem to find it. If anyone knows which episode that was can you please leave a link. You do excellent vlogs. I enjoy your style and the history of your countries canal system. Hope your doing well and will be seeing more of your videos. Take care mate.

I absolutely adore the old working boats their a beautiful piece of engineering and the skill at the tiller was amazing to watch they almost made a nearly impossible turn look easy , also just a quick update I have had an offer accepted on a 55ft former hire narrowboat called serenity so I will soon be joining you on the cut

@@talesfromtheswansneck I'm going to stay in Bradford on Avon for a few months , ideally I'd love this tart cruising in the summer but I have to get solar panels fitted , find place for a stove which i think will have to go in the galley and I'm going to have a very expensive ecoflow solar battery storage system set up separate from my measure batteries I'm also going to get ecoflows new solar powered Aircon unit as i cant have the boat getting to hot in the summer with the dogs on board so ideally hoping for a summer launch but depends when I can get the work done , I'm also hoping the name serenity is an omen especially since i walked in out of the blue and enquired with the hire boat firm before they were even advertised as serenity wasn't due to go on sale until easter

@@nathanberry4339 Sounds great. The K&A is pretty arduous for a solo boater so good idea to stay to the west of Caen Hill to get used to doing locks on your own. You may want to check out @emilytheboatmover on instagram, she's based near you and gives tuition to newbie boaters. Also have a look at The fit out pontoon website, lots of good info.

@@talesfromtheswansneckso I moved the boat today and it was only the second time I'd ever moved the boat and so I had an experienced tutor with me which was really lucky as we broke down reversing in the middle of the canal and had no steering fortunately it was just the gearbox needing an oil top up then when we un moored for the second time after the break down I pushed the boat out to hard and ended up only just holding onto the bow while my feet were just touching the tow path and half fell into the canal soaking my left leg it was just like an old looney tunes sketch 😂😂😂 but we still managed to get down to widbrook just a bit ahead of where i met you when you were moored up on the K&A
