Nursing Jobs : What Do LPNs Do?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

LPNs, or licensed practical nurses, perform similar tasks as registered nurses, except for the fact that they are being delegated or supervised by another RN or charge nurse. Find out how LPNs do reporting, monitoring of vital signs and basic wound care with help from a licensed RN in this free video on nursing jobs and health care.

    Thanks for finally giving LPN's the credit that is due instead of putting us down like I've seen a lot of RN's do. Lots of RNs have no clue what LPN's do. Kudos for a short and to the CORRECT point video.

    I graduated two years ago as an LPN from Galen in Louisville, Ky. Back there now for my RN. Yes LPNs are real nurses and should be treated as such.

    As Canadian RN, having LPN's are definite assets within the wards. They can perform basic/advanced patient assessments, administer meds, and they have knowledge of IV/PICCS. With additional training, they can become perioperative LPN's and orthopedics LPN's. LPN's are most definitely nurses. So called "RN's/ Physician Assistants" that commented here get off your high horse if that's your actual occupation because these are hard working individuals. They deserve the respect.

    @cielq Nursing assistant are called CNA they are not LVN/LPN. Nursing Assistance are not licensed personnel rather they are certified, hence the term Certified Nursing Assistance or CNA. LVN can do most of the jobs that an RN can do. I consider vocational nursing as a good stepping stone to RN.

    Well I saw your other comment before you deleted it. I don't understand how such an disrespectful person who lacks compassion and dignity such as yourself can be a nurse, hope you treat your patients better than your LPNs. I treat all my coworkers, CNAS LPNS RNS doctors and social workers, even the cleaning ladies, like that matter. Cause they do matter, Every single person is a piece to the puzzle and we all do our parts. Fortunately I am secure enough with myself to not put others down.Grow up

(just passed the NCLEX PN) I someday will bridge to RN also and need to play catch up with the bills first... Stay amazing (and beautiful!!!) and keep on educating :)!

    Its sad how ppl are goin in on lpns as if they are nothing having a big degree doesnt mean its ok to look down on someone or judge if u would look at a worker like that how do u look at a patient or a resident that soiled themselves bcus they are incontinent at least they are not out on the street begging for change they work hard just like an RN and there are different levels of nursing some are obviously more advanced but dont try to knock someone down just to build yaself up lets be better than that

    To answer the question of whether it is just as hard to become an LPN as it is an RN, I would say that is different. The education is shorter in length and focused more on the task oriented duties of nursing. LVN'S are a great asset to the healthcare team and I have had the privilege of working with and being in charge of some great LPNs. one key thing that the video touches on is that LPN assesses the patient and does many of the same things but the RN has to co-sign meds and assessments.

    people don't know that LPNS are entry level jobs to nursing so when you go for your to become a rn you can go ahead and go to a bachelors degree because of the experience vs a cna who hasn't to go through the full thing

    Pay rates and licensure aside, a nurse is a nurse because he/she was born that way. Yes there are some restrictions that vary by state or facility. But just because your facility has certain restrictions doesn't mean that is the law. L.V. NURSES can do most of what rns do. They haven't been groomed for management, but there are other things to consider. I personally would rather have an LVN with a good work ethic and a few years experience care for me than a new RN any day.

    Changing diapers is almost always a CNA job, probably the only time an LPN would do this is when a person is very large or immobile and the CNA needs help lifting the patient. Showers are also usually done by CNAs, with the same exception as with the diaper. LPNs, however, do insert and change catheters, urine collection and/or feces sample, change colostomy bags, dress wounds, care for infections/sores, etc. I throw in those things incase you were asking bc you thought it was gross...

    CNA usually takes care of bed pan duty by the way. Remember though, you'll end up doing a bit of everything in the end because if there's something that needs tending to right in front of you, and it's within your restrictions, you're expected to take care of it. Obviously, wether you're a CNA, LPN or RN, you'll come across and deal all types of wonderful stuff from urine to blood to feces to mucus to pus on a regular basis. Of course if you work in a Dr's office vs. a hospital, it varies.

  • @speeeee35
    @speeeee3511 жыл бұрын

    Lastly, with very difficult patients, in my experience, an RN or LPN on duty will usually volunteer to assist the CNA at changing time so the CNA doesn't get badly hit, etc. (This is in the case of nursing homes, mental hospitals, etc... but you can have a difficult patient anywhere you work, of course. Haha)

    @cielq no thats actually what is called a care aid. I live in canada and that is no where close to what an lpn is. when camparing an rn with a lpn, the major difference is that an Rn is allowed to care for a pallitive patient on their own, lpns must be under the supervision of an Rn for a pallitive patient. other than that Rn's generally but not always have more of a managment job now and Lpn's do 90% of what a Rn does, but we just get paidless. saying that lpns are way underskilled isincorrect

    You're just arrogant, end of story. Yes you have a higher degree and wider scope of practice than an LPN, but what makes you think LPNs don't work hard? You are putting LPNs down by saying they aren't nurses. Their title has NURSE in it because that's what they are. I am done discussing this. Maybe if you put as much work into your mentality and character as you did with your BSN, then it'd be worth talking to you. But as far as I see you're beneath many LPNs no matter what skills you do.

    @cielq LPN's are not like nurses aid's. Lpn's give meds, do assessment's for vital signs, insert catheters and catherter care ect..., among other things. Nurses aids cannot do any of this. Its very inconsiderate to lable lpn's under the same catorgory of a nurse's aid aka careaid. although care aids are an important part in many settings. btw I am an LPN . Lpn's do 90% of what a RN does and that is coming from Rn's with 20 years expericnce. ( my instructors).

    The real difference between a rn and lvn is some few courses at the end of the day its real petty to look down on another nurse because at the end of the day were all NURSES Lvn is just the first level of nursing big deal!!You wouldnt want a doctor to look down on you just because you are a ’rn’ and vise versa

  • @KerryLynne
    @KerryLynne10 жыл бұрын

    Not true. Depends where you are and what facility. Doesn't mean they aren't nurses either. They just have different roles than RNs. And what do you do? Are you a nurse? Cause if you are, then I guess you like talking down to people, taking care of a whole floor of patients without any help, or you just don't appreciate help? I feel sorry for your patients. And if you're not a nurse, then your argument is invalid and you should just stop lol

    I have my AAS and my BA in Liberal Arts.. BUT I'm unemployed and can't get ANY job... I'm thinking of going back to get a basic CNA certification and then working in a Hospital... Hopefully when I am there a year then the Hospital would pay for my continued education to become a RN, Lab Tech or Surgical Tech.. Could you share any advice for me on this plan? Is it a good idea or not? Thanks for your time. :)

    Why would you get a BAchelors in liberal arts??? Wat the hell kind of job can you get in liberal arts??? None!!! Unless you took some health/science classes apart of your bachelors, you'll basically be starting all the way back at square one. Try applying for accelerated BSN program, since you already have a bachelors some of your credits will transfer over and it will take 1-2 years to complete. Most accelerated programs are at private colleges

    I am a CNA and I work at a nursing home. My manager in our unit is an LPN. And we have R.N.'s that work in my unit. The LPN (manager) is over the RN's. I am confused. I thought RNs were over LPNs....

    She probably has a bachelors or a Masters degree in something else other than nursing, that's the only way I know of that some LPNs can assume managerial positions. One of our instructors at my nursing school was an LPN and I was just as confused but it turned out she had a masters degree prior to getting her nursing license which qualified her for the teaching position!
