Nurses Didn't 'Swap' Two Of My Babies | MY EXTRAORDINARY FAMILY

SUBSCRIBE to Truly: bit.ly/Oc61Hj
ASHLEY, 34, from Texas, is a mum of five who was shocked to her core when two of her children were born with Albinism. Ashley said that before the birth of her second child KD, she didn't even know what Albinism was. She told Truly: "I felt like they gave me the wrong baby, to me he was caucasian." Ashley admits that at the very beginning it was difficult for her to bond with her son as she just didn't feel like KD was hers, but that all changed the minute he first smiled at her and she instantly fell in love with him. Doctors told Ashley that the chances of her having a second child with Albinism were incredibly slim, but a few years later Ashley gave birth to daughter TT who also had the condition. Ashley has taken her story to social media to raise awareness of Albinism, but has been met with some cruel online hate. "It was a combination of reactions, a lot of positive and negative... They're 'whitewashed', that's 'not your daughter', somebody had TT's photo with the Ku Klux Klan and a rope." Despite the hate they have received, Ashley is incredibly proud of having two children with Albinism and refuses to hide them from the public eye. She added: "They're beautiful kids and they can do anything they put their minds to. I want my kids to be kids and I support them every step of the way."

Im a white person from Africa and everyone in Africa knows about Albinism. Its not common, but it happens often enough that it is expected that a certain % of black people will be albino. Its just a natural anomaly that happens. Unfortunately these poor albino people can have very tough lives because they are viewed with superstition, especially in very rural areas where people can be a little unknowing about these things. Thanks for spreading awareness about it.

True! At least a short explanation would have been good… But then again how come so many people don’t know what albinism is? Obviously times are different now, but I knew about it when I was in primary school and everyone in my class knew what it was in 7th grade when we talked about in biology lessons. So ig education in general is just as important. For everyone to be more open minded and accepting!

The hospital may not have been completely sure early on. Mixed race children can be anywhere from very fair to very dark regardless of what their parents look like. Once everyone figured it out the pediatrician should have explained about albinism and what the child needed to be safe and healthy. This is such a nice family. These kids will be alright.

I'm albino. I'm very happy that mom and the kids are making changes by helping people become aware of albinism but its unfortunate that mom didn't have that chance, causing her to create a distant relationship/bond with her son in the beginning. Growing up I have cooties or was the "ghost" I still made lots of friends because I was always a social butterfly and didn't care about the rude kids. To this day people still think I'm white as their initial thought and I had a friend that didn't believe I was black until she met my mom. When teaching kids about colour in humans, Albinism should be included since it is a condition that affects the skin and can confuse one on what the others "colour" may be. Now with that should also be vitiligo because they can get mixed up sometimes. I am a black albino, happily married to a Caucasian European man and I can't wait to see what our children look like! I also have 1 albino nephew!

yeah absolutely it should be taught. it's kind of rare but not *that* rare either and especially with people of colour, just knowing that it's a possibility would probably make it a lot less stressful than not knowing and thinking you have the wrong child. that must be traumatic.

I discovered this family through tiktok and I absolutely love the way they function as a unit. Mom is a no fucks given kinda girl who does not play about her kids and boom and kd being the oldest sons protect their family as well, it’s beautiful. I’m actually touched and inspired by her being so open and honest about her struggle in the beginning with kd because she shows growth and admits she didn’t know how to be there for him but she learned and god saw what she could do for him and said “you know what ma, you’re rocking this mom thing” and gave him a built in bestie who’s just like him and can relate. Those kids, all of them, have bright futures ahead of them

I was thinking both of them looked just like you. Not that you owe anyone anything, it might be fun to do a pic or video with your face in the center, and the two of them on either side, with their faces mushed up next to yours. To make it easy to see how the features line up. But even without that, you can tell they have your face. Your family is adorable.

I love that the family is super together and supportive. When they grow up, I wonder if any of their children would also have albinism since having 2 siblings with it is so rare!

When I was in Middle School in VA in the early 90's I had a best friend who had Albinism. She invited me over to her house and I was shocked to find out she had a sister with it too. She explained to me that it was rare for two to be born in the same family. Her name was Fatima. I wish I knew what she is up to now.

Nah, no one can ever tell me those aren't her kids; they all look like her and are so incredibly beautiful. People really need to opt for understanding the basic concepts of genetics and hereditary defects instead of spreading hate and racism

Albinism occurs most often in Tanzania Africa --1 in every 1000 births. Compared to Europe, USA or Canada 1 in every 20,000 to 35,000 births. Wow, how amazing!! Kids like every one else. They just have lighter skin & eyes while sensitive to sunlight. One of God's beautiful creations which we as humans cannot explain, right? 🤷🏾‍♀️🤗

I grew up in the Canal Zone, Republic of Panama. The San Blas Islands are the home of the Kuna (Cuna, Guna) indigenous people. The Kuna Indians are a small indigenous population in Central America, which independently own the province of Kuna Yala that spans some 400 miniature San Blas Islands off the east Panama coast. Their island population of about 30,000 resides in compact quarters, inhabiting only a few of those islands because they value family and tightly knit community over independent personal spread. The Kuna Indians have the world's highest rate of oculocutaneous albinism (specifically OCA2), with an estimated frequency of 1:160. The albinos, called the Moon Children, play a central role in Kuna mythology, are revered to have special powers and subsequently are often rendered prime positions in the community, such as doctors, shamans, and leaders. While appreciable anthropologic data has been gathered about the Kuna albinism, there has been surprisingly minimal medical research. This is likely in part because of the relative impermeablility to Westernization by this proud and hard-working community. I have never had a problem accepting albinism in anyone. I think that your family is completely amazing.

What a beautiful family! It’s heartbreaking that anyone could or would think differently. I grew up being constantly asked if I was adopted, being asked where I was from. And now I have kids that fit into an ‘other’ category. It’s hard and emotionally draining. Ashley, your family thrives because of you and your support people. Even though it might be tough sometimes, you are making the world better, more inclusive, more accepting and more beautiful with your beautiful children. Thank you. My only advice is to always be open and honest with your kids and keep them talking and expressing their feelings (super important for them to talk, no bottled up emotions).

@@queennanna5595I think she just means like it's a different time. We are all fully aware of how blacks were treated. And it's something that isn't always easy for others to digest. I do feel like there are genuine people who actually do care enough to look beyond our skin tone and just see a person. I remember walking in a shoe store with a child who's mixed and the guy who worked there is Mexican I believe. He said to me how could you do that knowing what they did to your people like why. In actuality I couldn't get offended fully because I understood his point of view. However I don't want to carry that thought everytime I look at a white person. Theres a girl who I work with who doesn't like white people because of that very issue. It's very challenging to be honest. I feel like it is the stupidest thing to have been in rage about. That shouldn't have even been a thing.
