Minnesota is known as one of the snowiest states in the country. And yet, year after year after year, we get hundreds of accidents every time it snows. Do people not learn? I guess people think that they're immune to losing traction on icy roads.. a true testament to the idiocy of the human race.

The plain truth is people are driving too fast. I am 72, born and raised here. I used to live and farm southwest of the cities. I have driven in all kinds of weather. Now I live in north east Minnesota, I drove down in the metro area a few time in the past year, including driving 94 our to St Cloud. I did not see one highway patrol, and, folks were smashing the speed limits, it is no wonder that they end up in the ditch.

@@ezzlivin I agree completely. If you need to commute, give yourself extra time. Go in early and have a cup of coffee before starting work. Our newer vehicles with traction control and all wheel drive, tend to give some drivers a false sense of security. Personally, I just drive a comfortable safe speed, andl let everyone else pass me. I try to maintain a healty distance between myself and the car in front of me. Driving defensively means, keeping an eye out of where you can go, if you need to get out of the way.

I'm not sure if this actually did just happen yesterday or if this is when they posted it. But I can save for sure that driving from Blaine to Woodbury was not good yesterday. My four-wheel drive car is in the shop so I'm driving a two-wheel drive Hyundai Elantra. I'm a former 10-year driver of school buses and we learned to go the appropriate speed for conditions and to leave yourself enough space if somebody has issues in front of you. I was trying to do that yesterday because every time I went under a bridge the back end of my car would fishtail. A slow and steady 45 miles an hour in the slow lane was almost too much. I did have to chuckle when the pickup was passing me in the fast lane almost spun completely around hitting that ice under the bridge.

When driving on sheets of ice like that, you really should not be doing any more than 30 mph since a gust of wind will eventually spin you around, and if you are only doing 30 then you will be okay, you won't fly off the road like you will if you are going faster.

@@MikeX3000 Yes, if you are driving too close, and, too fast, or you are distracted by that large video screen on your dash board. or you are trying to eat an egg mcmuffin on your way to work. Driving in bad weather demands complete concentration, and, requires defensive driving. Part of that is to always have a plan b and, drive in a way that gives you time to react. I have driven on a freeway, come over a hill and saw the semi in front of me start to fishtail, cars and trucks in the ditches, but, the semi driver kept his cool, and, so did I, we both eased up on the gas, and, slowly kept on going. People are driving way too fast for the conditions, and, not driving with the alertness that they require. I have been driving in Minnesota for almost sixty years, and never slid into the ditch or had an accident, but, I did learn to drive properly, and, my father who was an over the road trucker and heavey equiptment operator, taught me how to drive, and, do it safely in all kinds of weather.

I feel bad for semi truck drivers. In the last few days I’ve had so many people just cut me off with barely any time for stopping I don’t know why some of these tiny little cars or any kind of vehicles try to cut in front of me when it’s icy roads and talk people have to drive more safely, put yourself in the other person‘s shoes situation if you pull out in front of them and only give them a few feet of stopping and they ram in the back of your car who’s fault is it yours.

That's what highway cams are for so people can check the roads without a storm chaser parking on the side of the interstate in terrible weather to upload his or her video to YT. You know dam well someone will see you parked and panic slam on thier brakes and you just caused a wreck. Bet it's already happened or will...
