9 years later... Still a life saver to create wind in the far back of the frame without having to rig thousand of trees. Thanks a lot!

Wow, great tutorial! I continue to be amazed by the creative techniques employed by experienced compositors in Nuke. Really amazing stuff. Was looking for something like this-- had tried to move the tops of trees blowing in the wind via Nuke's Spline Warp tool but this new technique would probably be much more convincing. Plus could probably use the reflection technique described to create a water ripple/ downwash effect from a helicopter over water, for another project I'm working on. Thanks so much for sharing!!

Awesome tutorial! Thank you for uploading. Question - at the end, how did you get the water specular highlights to be isolated only to the reflection area?

Hi, thank you for this wonderful tutorial. If I may ask a question, what was the purpose of having two channels for the branch if you were going to isolate it with the mask?

Can you go into how you created the reflection? I don't understand how you created specs the noise. And how that connects to the grade node

Where did you get that custom ShuffleCopy? It doesn't exist in my Nuke so I couldn't really follow after that.

question: since your noise affects all the picture does it affect your colors when you composite the tree with some background other than black?

  • @dreamsurfer31VFXLUNCHBOX

Hello and thanks for your question. The distortion effect will only affect the element it is applied to. It is being applied to an image that contains RGBA channels. So you will be premultiplying the affected RGB by the alpha channel. So it will affect only the colors and the alpha of the element. It will not affect your background. I hope this helps.

I can't find the shufflecopy node, I was stuck right there, my version is NukeX 12.2v1, any idea?

You can use the new Shuffle node ( it replaces the old shufflecopy) or the copy node. If you want to still use the older version you just have to press "X" while in the node graph and type "ShuffleCopy ". This will create the legacy node. This video is from an older version of nuke. Many moons ago. Being working constantly in production, so I haven't been able to update any content.

I tried it and of course what I get in the viewport is my noise pattern. As always fuckin nuke doesn't do what you need. It pisses me off.
