Nui Dat - 1st Australian Task Force in Vietnam

Once Phuoc Tuy in South Vietnam had been selected as the provincial site for the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF), a location for its base had to be chosen. There were three possibilities: Ba Ria, Phuoc Tuy’s capital; the port of Vung Tau; and an area in the province’s central region known as Nui Dat, Vietnamese for ‘Dirt hill’.

Bought back a lot of memories. Last visited in 2008 and the video shows even more changes to the area since then. Luscombe field is still visible though. Saw service there 1966/67 and again in 1970/71.

Hey Pat, I visited in 93 & again in 2003, couldn't get up the Horseshoe, Viet Army engineers had it all red taped as they were clearing mines & UXB''s, in 2003 I couldn't get up again as mining companies were making it into road fill. Locals have built up beside Luscombe field making it one of the best & widest roads in Vietnam, looking at this Vid the changes are astounding. Thanks for your service Pat.

@House of GILNOCKIE - MANGERTON Whilst in Country Nui Dat was home, Vungers was better & the best of all was walking up the gang plank back onto the Sydney. I spent lots of time & lots of beers with our Vets at the old base, even time with 173rd Airborne Vets in the central highlands, driving around in a rented Willys jeep to all their old bases, met a lot of VC & NVA Vets, they showed no animosity or ill will toward our Vets, on the contrary, they wanted to meet them, give them a hug & have a cold beer, sitting back, just watching & listening I could see they shared the same nightmares every night but sharing experience seemed to me, to be a big stress relief & great therapy. You could cut this young kid some slack, he put together a Vid in Honour of Australia's service in Vietnam, he's no Spielberg but he's learning, English not being his first language a lot is lost in the Translation. The Vietnamese really respect the Australians, Long Tan is the ONLY allied War memorial aloud in Vietnam. You went through something no person should ever have too, made sacrifices unimaginable to Civvies back home. Thank you for your Service.

@@AsiaTravelHolidays I am also part of a tour organisation in Vung Tau and we conduct tours in this area, which many of us know intimately. Your problem is that the tones are wrong and the words, both English and Vietnamese, especially of name places, are pronounced wrong. And I think the reason is that is the voice is not real.
