Very polite nuclear convoy passing through Brize Norton during a cold winter evening. Lots of waves & beeps from the personnel.

I like your thinking ! The concept of the 'decoy' first came to me as a youngster, when I saw a TV movie called 'HIJACK' (1973) with David Janssen. Two lorry drivers have to transport a valuable cargo across the USA, get attacked along the way, then find out at the end they're just carrying bags of sand !🙂

Fun fact: although specifically targetting and filming one person can constitute harassment, in general, everyone in the UK has a right to just go into public spaces and film whatever and whomever they want. By going into public you are considered to have waived your right to not be filmed or photographed. (Contrast France, where the opposite applies and it's illegal to film anyone, even in passing)

I happened to mention them to a colleague whose son, I think, was in the military. I was quite surprised when I was told what the convoys were. My surprise was not that they were transporting these, but that I'd never given it a thought before then. Maybe I used to think that they sprinkled them with fairy dust, and they were magically tranferred across the country powered by unicorn farts! 😂

I got stopped about 2 years ago as I was joining the M6 near Nantwich as one of these convoys was passing by. It’s almost awe inspiring to think that enough destructive power is driving past (obviously unarmed, with various other safeguards and minus the Trident missile) to put Russia back into the dark ages (along with ourselves and everybody else). As long as these convoys are making return trips to Aldermaston and don’t ever only go one way to Coulport, we’ll be fine.

A Trident war head will burn people out to 8 kilometres then you'd have secondary effects of radiation in the medium to long term. Given that Trident is 8 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb and if detonated over St Petersburg, would immediately incinerate over 600,000 people, it's entirely feasible that millions would die although not in the immediate period.

Not necessarily. They won't take any risks that somehow the convoy is leaked internally and thus they are vulnerable. Nuclear weapons have been transported like this many times, and hence why the over the top protection. Those MoD police vans and other vehicles contained dozens and dozens of highly trained armed military personnel ready to deploy at a moments notice if anyone attempts to attack the nuclear trucks. Those trucks are also the ones kitted out to withstand bombs, RPGs and so on. Sometimes they are discreetly moved but it will depend on the size or type of nuclear weapon and quantity. A more valuable or larger quantity of nuclear weapons will always have a very distinctive convoy and protection as a clear deterrent. Discreet convoys are also not that discreet, it is very obviously still a convoy and a convoy that has escorts, blue lights and sirens as they cannot afford to be stopping at any moment, not even for traffic lights. They are all still bullet and explosion proof. All nuclear weapon transports discreet or not have ridiculous amount of armed personnel following and this requires a lot of large vehicles. As well as a recovery vehicle, and fire engine for any eventuality. Not to mention communications and often signal jammers. No nuclear transport ever goes without all of that, smallest nuclear weapon or not. They will never risk a discreet transport being intercepted by assuming because its secret and discreet that nothing can go wrong. Not a chance when it comes to nuclear weapons. But yes, less 'valuable' (or yield) and the odd one or two small nuclear weapons being transported can be done 'discreetly' but there is still not much discreet about it. It just isn't as obvious as this convoy or require as much personnel.

It's not every day you catch something like this on camera. If only that woman cared about what was going through her tiny village rather than you filming the whole ruddy thing. Some people are determined to ruin other peoples day.

I'm not entirely sure if they were civilian police, or MOD. It was a military convoy, so my assumption is that the vehicles involved would have been MOD.

I saw a similar thing in Glasgow on the erskine bridge where they closed the whole bridge down and had about 4 bomb squad vans 3 blacked out vans and a couple fire service and police blocking the roads and there were 3 fully blacked out Lorries passing over

Very interesting, they even appear to have spare vehicles just in case the truck breaks down so they can minimize downtime etc, very well thought out!
