NSW Railways - The Ten Tunnels - Lithgow NSW HD

In this video we travel on the Down Mainline bound for Lithgow passing through the Famous Ten Tunnel Deviation. The Ten tunnels are located between Edgecombe and Zig Zag and they opened on the 16 October 1910 and was built to replace the now Famous Lithgow Zig Zag, In which two of the Viaducts of the Zig Zag can been seen at around the 8 Minute mark. We also round the tightest curve on the Main Western Line named "Cape Horn" which has a radius of 160m or 8 Chains.

Found this video this evening and enjoyed it very much. My first trip through the tunnels was over 70 years ago, when my father took me for the May school holiday to stay with his aunt and uncle on their property at Rylstone. In the late 1980s, my wife and I were taking a holiday in Adelaide and returned on the Indian Pacific. I have little recollection of the Tunnels on either that or a repeat journey a couple of years later. Perhaps we were paying more attention to our lunch. In June this year, I made a rail journey to Lithgow specifically to experience the section between Bell and Lithgow. It was quite easy - a train from our local station about 8 am, and change at Central. A couple of hours in Lithgow around the main centre gave time for lunch and a visit to the Hoskins Church. It was cold, but I was expecting that and had a warm coat. Then the train back. $2.50 on the Seniors' Card was excellent value.

Great looking rock outcroppings in some rugged country seen on a sunset journey!

Nice video, I love travelling to or from Sydney by train, although I have not done it for years. Normally Newcastle or Gosford to Central.

At 240 you can see a "ghost" in the next tunnel. You can also see a kangaroo on the tracks shortly after
