Also known as Arcade Archives: Tranzor Z. This is the first anime-licensing arcade game for Arcade Archives and it's cost $14.99. Other Arcade Archives titles cost $7.99 each. It's from Banpresto and speaking of Banpresto, I hope they gonna have Arcade Archives: Sailor Moon at some point.

(Part 1) Stranger things have happened on Hamster's Arcade Archives, be it Arika's Tetris: The Grand Master and now we have Bandai Namco's 1994 release Mazinger Z! Based on the influential namesake franchise, it's a vertical 2D shooter that used the CAVE 68000 hardware. Around 1994-1999, said hardware hosted games from CAVE (DonPachi, DoDonPachi, Uo Poko, Dangun Feveron, ESP RaDe, Guwange), Gazelle (Aku Gallet, Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon), Takumi (Koro Koro Quest), Atlus (Gouketuji Ichizoku 2 & Saikyou Densetsu), and obscurities like Oni: The Ninja Master (Pandora Box), Hotdog Storm (Marble) and Gaia Crusaders (Noise Factory). Since Banpresto was among the many Bandai Namco subsidiaries at the time, it's a given they never actually developed games, so that leads to the actual developers. Luckily the gaming sleuths were able to connect the dots as best as possible. Even with the gathered info in mind, take it or leave it! Looking at the various sources from GDRI, Shmuplations' translation of the 2013 Mahou Daisakusen interviews, the Twitter user / manga artist known as "ranran", Battle Garegga 20th Anniversary Memorial Book Bluescape, veteran composer Hitosho Sakimoto's Basiscape profile (Sakimoto was credited for sound effects) and programmer Hisanori Takeuchi's webpage (who was credited for enemy logic), all fingers point to *Eleven* (shadow developer formed by ex-Kaneko/Inter State staffers behind Kaneko's home ports, X68K Kyuukyoku Tiger, Super Star Soldier, Star Parodier, Nexzr) and *Raizing/Eighting* (formed by ex-staff from Technosoft, Compile, Naxat Soft and Toaplan; best known for Mahou Daisakusen, Super Bomberman: Panic Bomber World, Battle Garegga, Soukyu Gurentai: Terra Diver, Bloody Roar, Armed Police Batrider, Battle Bakraid, 1944: The Loop Master, Brave Blade, Kururin, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom). It's quite the resume from two companies with STG experience, isn't it?

Do you remember when Nova 2001 and Mutant Night got Switch releases on Arcade Archives? That's right, the good old UPL is back which means it's time for yet another Arcade Archive goody that is currently owned by Hamster. Released by UPL in 1987, Ark Area is a direct sequel to the 1983 title, Nova 2001. The basic aim of the game fairly simple. You take control of a fighter aircraft that can rotate in various directions in order to defeat the enemies in sight that seemingly appear out of nowhere. This UPL title has quite a few unique features such as appealing graphics, decent audio, as well as colorful afterimage stages. But, how does this legendary title play compared to dozens of other Hamster shooters released in the past? Stay tuned to find out tomorrow on Arcade Archives.

(Part 2) Per The Cutting Room Floor, there were regional differences: "The Japanese logo features the standard Mazinger Z logo, while the English version has an all-new logo and centers the Z. The copyright text is also different between the two; the Japanese version has it as a full graphic, whereas it's just standard text in the English set. The Japanese version has text in the demo for the Photonic Power Lab (Mazinger Z), the Science Fortress Institute (Great Mazinger), and the Space Science Laboratory (Grendizer). The English set removes these. The English set has a tutorial of sorts in the demo, featuring a joystick and buttons that react to the demo's movements. The Japanese version lacks this entirely. Strangely, the joystick in the service menu changes color between regions. The blue version is unique to the English set, with the Japanese getting red. Stranger still is that the joystick in the demo was red, so why bother changing it...?" It's been documented on MAME, which indicated the World release being first while the JP set was second. (InB4 Bob Loblaw chooses to be a dick by playing contrarian, but I don't care at this point!) Mazinger Z never saw any home releases until Hamster's Arcade Archives for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch (May 11, 2023 worldwide + Asia). Due to the third-party license, the Hamster release received a price hike of 1500 JPY ($14.99 USD/£11.99) instead of the usual 800 JPY ($7.99 USD/£5.79); it's safe to say future licensed games will also come with license taxes. For the Arcade Archives release, Hamster wisely opted to only feature the Japanese version (thereby promptly ignoring the obscure World release, which was more barren due to the aforementioned regional differences); the usual options, leaderboards and score attack modes are present. More importantly, it's the first modern reissue of a Raizing/Eighting/CAVE adjacent game on Hamster's Arcade Archives, relatively speaking that is. Wouldn't surprise me if they reissued Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, given the upcoming Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos movie.
