I have both editions. The NRSV is my main translation and I like the ue a lot. I really like the premium - I agree that the leather is exceptionally nice, great paper, nice dark bold print, a winner. I also appreciate that the 'personal size' has the same pagination. I use that one for tossing in the car etc. Kudos to Zondervan for getting a premium edition of the ue out so soon.

I got the personal size NRSVue with the exact same leathersoft cover around a little over a month ago, and it has quickly become my "throw-in-the-backpack" bible. I've been really impressed by the gradual improvements in leathersoft covers. This one feels like it will last a while. The comfort print, though I don't think it's the most attractive typeface, is incredibly readable even in smaller sizes. As far as the translation goes, NRSV has been one of my go-to translations since college. Now that I'm Anglican, where readings from the Apocrypha come up from time to time in the lectionary, carrying around a bible with those has made the most sense. The translation updates, overall, make a lot of sense. I could nitpick a couple, but that's true of every translation. I think I'll be carrying this one around for some time.

Lovely review thanks. I only found the NRSV last month so started to read it and really liked it. I was after a Sunday best bible so I was looking around and came across your review here. I am aware of the couple of perhaps contentious translations in the UE version but I thought I would go for it and I've got a Premier version. This is the best bible I've ever owned and love it. I too had reservations as well great anticipation for this update. I love the NRSV and have used it for a while and I honestly wasn't ready for an update mainly because it was one of the only literal translations that herald from the translations read in churches throughout the ages. I appreciate and cherish the way the original NRS was handled, but I have to say that I have warmed up to the "ue". And if anything, I am glad to see that this translation which has always received unnecessary criticism over the years, gets another release to equip and encourage the saints. Thanks for the review, good stuff.

I have used the NRSV since 1989. The update is welcome

My nrsvue premium came in today and man it is the softest leather Bible that I’ve ever held.

The Premium version may be more expensive, but that Leathersoft cover looks awesome! Yeah, it would be great to be able to afford the Premium version, but there's nothing wrong with the somewhat cheaper Leathersoft version. I think a person would be proud to have either one.

I got the personal size edition after watching your unboxing video. I like it for all the reasons you mentioned in your review. I will wait for reference editions to come out before investing in a premier collection one though.

there has been a tonne of debate around genesis 1:1 in academic circles for a long time, and the NRSVue version has been slowly gaining ground. i got swayed by the arguments several years ago, and i confess i bought my NRSVue copy (the swanky premier one) *just* for that change 🙂

I enjoy my brown leather soft, too. 🤓 I was a little underwhelmed with the UE. I was hoping they would improve the readability some, but as you said, it was a relatively minor update. Looks like I’ll have to wait for an ESV 2026 (I don’t know if that’s a thing, but let’s start that rumor). 🤪

Wow, those are lovely. I am definitely interested in that personal size one. I wish they would make a bonded leather with vinyl lining verson. Abington Press makes a really nice inexpensive NRSV that's worth checking out. Since starting seminary NRSV has become my main translation. I started using it in a New Testament orientation class and fell in love with it. Great video as always 👍

@@philr3381 Hey Phil... I get the impression that they are going "all in" with the update. I don't know that for sure, but I have not heard about any new 1989 editions in the works not that the update it here.

Bought the black personal size NRSV with Apocrypha. Loved the type setting, design of the cover, and the silver gloss. I think the paper quality could be better though. It feels a bit cheap and from your commentsI suspect the NRSVue personal edition may be similar.

You should compare this primer edition with the primer edition of the Thompson chain that what it reminds me of minus the references on the side of the Thompson chain

The 1989 NRSV starts with "In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth..." (Gen. 1:1) but then adds the footnote "Or 'when God began to create' or 'In the beginning God created'." I prefer the 1989 because even the Hebrew bible starts with "bereshit" (in the beginning) and uses that word for the title of the first book of Moses. I use the Nelson premier collection NRSV reference (without Apocrypha) because I love the single-column layout. It's the Bible I use in the pulpit so I really like the size and the floppiness to it, it stays open nice. I also like the three ribbons and the purple undergilt.

Thanks, Tim. As ever, a great review. Did I hear you say in your previous video that CUP or OUP plan to release an anglicized edition of the NRSVue? Also, you'd wonder - if this is technically not a new translation - why we won't automatically see a NRSVue-CE.

I know Cambridge is hard at work on NRSVue editions, and I assume they will be anglicized. Not sure about official Catholic editions.

Hey Pastor Tim, it's Pastor Tim here lol. Regarding the typeface, to my eyes it is not so much that the typeface has changed, as it appears to be ever-so-slightly less bold. For example, the typeface in the Single Column Reference edition was so bold as to be harsh at times. In the NRSVue Premier edition, it seems to my eyes to have been dialed back just a tad, and it makes a big difference. I do hope they make a Purple speckled goatskin version, that one is my favorite and have been preaching out of it all this year.

I did a small research on 1 Cor 6:9 text on all the available translation from Literal to Dynamic. This NRSV-UE is the ONLY Bible translation I could find with such a radical change in interpretation. But the Bible looks great thought. Thanks for the review.

It definitely showed bias in this translation. There is no debate amongst scholars about the meaning of the Greek here. Of course, there are other verses affirming that homosexuality is considered sinful in the NRSVUE but there’s no reason for them doing this in the two places they did.

It's not radically different. It's needlessly awkward, which makes it sound vaguer than it is. They translate arsenokoitai as "men who engage in illicit sex." Arseno = men Koitai = illicit sex Who are engaging in illicit sex? Men. Not men and women, for the NRSVue never uses the word "men" inclusively. It's men who are engaging in this sex. And what does "illicit" mean? Something that's against the law. Which law? In this case, the Law of Moses. And where does the Law of Moses talk about illicit sex? Leviticus 18. The problem, of course, is that an English reader could misunderstand it quite easily. It could be taken to mean "individual men who engage in sex acts that violate the Law of Moses," which would still point to the list in Leviticus 18 but not specifically to verse 22. (Inevitably, you'd have to include verse 22 as one of the forms of "illicit sex," but it's not as pointed.) And that's assuming that the reader didn't think Paul was talking about Roman law instead of Jewish law. The translators could've done better, for sure, but the accurate meaning is present if you cut past the less-than-ideal phrasing.

@@MAMoreno But usage trumps that sort of etymological adding together of the roots of a word. They went out of the way to make these verses ambiguous regarding homosexuality. But as you said it’s not a radical change from the former NRSV (which I enjoy) and other verses remain that are clear on the nature of homosexuality. It was just unwise on their part. I think it’ll end up isolating them even further from conservative Christianity.

Hey Tim, any word on when a reference edition of the NRSVue might drop?

Better yet just get the premier edition only and do a video of them as a separate video of comparing them to the difference between them

Great review. I bought the premier edition largely for the larger font size. I will admit the goatskin cover is pleasing to the touch and smell. My biggest issue with all the options for NRSVue is the maximum font size in print format is 10 pt. For those with weak eyes (even with prescription glasses) get the Kindle edition. It's not as nice to hold, but you can adjust the fonts so that the text is easier to read.

Tim, at some point are you going to delve a little deeper into the translation itself...I'm a fan of the NRSV from when it first came out...but a little hesitant to pull the trigger on the Updated Edition...great work you do...appreciated...thank you for what you do...

I have a nrsv premier collection with speckled edges...it's amazing! I'm not a giant nrsv fan but it's a good translation. I'd be hesitant to read the updated version...changing genesis bothers me deeply. Kinda like ESV changes to genesis that wasn't my fave either.

I too have the premier specked edges - great bible. But I really like the vast majority of changes in the ue - (especially that they got rid of "booty" and replaced it with "plunder." LOL) And I'm happy that they changed "faith in" to "faith of Jesus Christ" in Gal 2:16, 20 and 3:22.

Dear Beth, the NRSVue translation is actually much closer to the meaning of the original Hebrew. It literally says "In beginning God...." This connotes that God preexisted creation and decided to create. "In THE beginning" can be interpreted as there was also a point of beginning for God. I am actually glad to see the change. The only issue I've ever had with the Premier Collection bibles is that they're all too big. I prefer a good carry bible, like a compact or traditional Thinline. Don't get me wrong, they are treasures for sure, but I'm still waiting for a compact NRSV in this type of release. Although they finally gave the NRS comfort print a two-color presentation! Which is awesome and long overdue. You would think that it would have been purple, but I really liked the wine color.

@@timwildsmith I ordered a rebind but have not yet sent in the Bible. I’m torn between sending the larger one with better paper and purple art gilt, or the smaller one with ideal size.

I'm interested in knowing if the punctuation of John 1:1-5 is the same in the ue as it was in the NRSV. Can you please take a look at that? The NRSV is different from any other translation I've seen, and it is my favorite.

I was going to purchase the goat skin one but I hear people saying the pages and chapters are not placed correctly. Some guy had repeating pages and books, while the other guy opened the bible to read Genesis and it started at chapter 32...

Does your copy of the Premier Collection goatskin one have the half glued pages at the front and back??? I am talking about the two very first pages. I was told by the publisher that this is not a defect but rather a part of the leather edge lining. It looks weird to me and I do not know why those pages were not just fused together totally instead of half way. But since it is not a defect and it is a part of making it a better stronger Bible....I can live with it. Do all the premier collection ones have that half fused thing? The leather is super soft and gorgeous as is the rest of the Bible. As a Jew who bought it for the Old Testament I would have preferred the cross only in the New Testament....that is not a big deal though...not going to have a cow....besides I love Christmas lights and Christian architecture. I like how this translation really makes use of the Dead Sea Scroll Bible manuscripts instead of just talking about it.

Do these have red letter?

A someone who grew up in a religious household, i never truly paid attention at church or at home. I am now as an adult wanting to strengthen my faith but what holds me back is feeling like im not going to get the right bible. How can I be sure that im not purchasing something that could have wrong translations or even missing verses?There are so many versions/translations and different sellers that i fear playing myself looking in the wrong place.

Look up “Greek-English Interlinear ESV New Testament” and see if this type of Bible might interest you. It’s got the ESV translation, plus a literal interlinear so you can see a very literal word for word translation alongside it. It allows you to have the best of both worlds. They make one for the Hebrew OT as well. Look up “Hebrew-English Interlinear ESV Old Testament”

I’m AV-preferred but I am very fond of NRSV and this 2022 update! I hate hearing those who use the critical text dub the NRSV as “liberal”. I think that’s the pot calling the kettle black, any issue that is pointed out in the NRSV/ue I can find the same “problem” in the NASB, LSB, ESV, CSB, NLT, NET, which all conservatives use and endorse.

Are either of your links affiliate links? If I can support your channel with a purchase, I'd like that. I'm thinking of splurging on the deluxe edition (combo of this year's birthday present to myself to set aside for late December and playing the "cancer card" at myself 😉). It's a splurge, but it's the type size my eyes like. I'm leaning toward getting it.

I found this Bible simply by TRYING to find a Bible that translates Genesis 1:1 exactly this way. Now I’m searching for a NRSVue Bible to purchase, after finally finding one that holds true to the original meaning

Notice that the other translations at some Bible the revelation title is to John rather than to Jesus Christ of which is supposed to be Jesus Christ not John some of my other Bible has Jesus Christ and some of the other Bible revelation page has to John Personally I rather have Jesus Christ on the title page than John on all translations of the revelation title otherwise it is confusing My Thomson chain has the revelation of Jesus Christ Others have John as theirs I’ve been noticing that on a lot of bibles The Allan has John the Divine on their revelation page All translations should go with Jesus Christ not John the divine on the revelation page

There are some some things where reasonable minds can differ. But aspects of the NRSV-ue goes beyond reasonable disagreement over an ancient word and demonstrates an agenda on the part of the translators.

I don’t understand your point in referencing a translation made in 1611 or referencing a highly controversial translation that is the direct ancestor of the NRSVue, and they certainly don’t prove anything about the veracity of the NRSVue.

The problematic change was with 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, and the reasons (or lack of reasons) for the weakening of the language they chose to go with is pretty lame.

You might want to see the NRSVUE 21's translation of 1 Corinthians 6:9 & 1 Timlothy 1:10 🤦🏾‍♂️

I am surprised you use the nrsvue. In 1 Cor. 6:9, the translator is wrong. 8:07 He fails to translate correctly the word that means homosexual. The footnote indicates meaning uncertain.

The word doesn't mean "homosexual." It means "males who lie with males," which is close to how it's translated in the CSB and NIV. The word "homosexual" is too broad: the coitus is specifically between two males, so lesbians are not in view. And Paul is concerned with people who are actually engaging in sexual intercourse, so celibate homosexuals would not be the target of his criticism. The original NRSV's "sodomites" was misleading because the Greek word isn't related to the Greek word for "Sodom." The NRSVue's translation sounds vague, but if you take the committee's philosophy on gender inclusiveness into account, you'll see that it's really not that inaccurate. - The first half of the word, arseno, is translated as "men." - The NRSV doesn't use "men" to refer to both men and women. - Therefore, the people who "engage in" this sin are all male. - The second half of the word, koitai, is translated as "illicit sex." - In Greek, Leviticus 18.22 uses koitai to refer to "lying" with a male. - The "illicit" part refers to the fact that this act violates the Law. - Thus, "men who engage in illicit sex" is technically correct. As for the "uncertain" aspect of it, that comes from looking at its early usage over the first few centuries AD. It may specifically mean one particular kind of act between males, or it may be a reference to all kinds of male-male relations, or it might even be more in reference to the primary act associated with male-male intercourse regardless of the participants (as one early source seems to warn that a man could commit it with a woman). The note is certainly too vague, and it only adds to the apparently vague translation in the text, but again, there is a legitimate scholarly reason to say that the exact meaning is disputed. So yes, the text could use a minor revision here. Change it to say "men who engage in illicit sex together," and voila: you've fixed the problem. If you're using it in church, this is a very easy word to insert. Just explain that you're doing so for the sake of clarity because of a muddled bit of syntax on the translation committee's part.

I respect your right to your opinion...but can you explain more what you mean? What proof are you using to say they do not faithfully translate the original ancient manuscripts? Have a great day.

See Mark Ward’s well-argued criticism of the NRSVue. It does compromise on homosexuality. There is a reason “liberal” churches like “liberal” translations. I’m rejecting NRSVue; there is no good reason to use it when we have so many other faithful translations. NRSVue is now in the untouchable column. Don’t use it, read it, buy it, celebrate it or recommend it.

Also some Evangelical bibles are not faithful enough to the ancient manuscripts...especially the Dead Sea Scroll ones for my taste. I thought the whole point was to translate from the most accurate ancient manuscripts.

@@booklover3959 The point is to accurately convey God’s word, and spread his word to save mankind from sin and hell. There is no salvation without repentance from sin. And if *you* cause others to stumble with *your* heresy, *your* hell will be worse than theirs and you’ll wish you were never born. God sent Jesus to take our horrific punishment for sin. To deny the sin is to deny the purpose of Christ’s substitutionary atonement.

@@paulklenknyc Hey Paul....first I wish you the best...that you come closer to God as we are all struggling to do. Second, if you are not translating from the best sources then how are you accurately conveying the Word of God as you said? Before you translate accurately you have to know what you are translating. Thirdly, Jesus spent a lot of time hanging out with sinners and outcast....prostitutes, lepers, tax collectors, the lowest of the low. He himself was despised and rejected. He said that the whole of the law was to love God and love other humans. If you convey a spirit of Love then you will attract others to God. If you convey a spirit of self righteousness and hate then you will turn people away from God. Believe me Paul...I used to think that I was pure and everyone was bad....I was full of self righteousness and judgement. And I was awful. I now am trying to be different and show people by my spirit and actions God's love though I often fall short I am sure. So I wish you the best for real Paul.
