What did you do in between the year you didn’t match and the year you did? Did you do another year of medical school?

@@lilyreiser8808 No, I graduated on time. I don't think it is even possible to do an additional year of medical school, unless you failed a course. During my year off, I met with my school's program director to discuss the pitfalls of my application. Then I made the changes suggested. I found shadowing opportunities, which I used one for a new letter of recommendation. I also worked as a scribe through a company called ScribeAmerica. That was a MAJOR humbling experiencing. At that time, I had graduated from medical school with a MD in good standing but scribing. Lastly, I worked as an Epic consultant. Epic is one of the premier electronic medical record companies. And of course continue to volunteer in community/church events that I was personally interested in. Those experiences above were included in a NEW personal statement, which I also talked about the adversity of not matching. It also important to expand not only the number of programs but also to different regions when applying the following year. I definitely will be making a more in-depth and detail video on "what to do next when you go unmatch". I hope this helped!

Great video. Of note (in case any med students are reading this): Preliminary and transitional year residencies are not simply for unmatched applicants or struggling students, as this video leads you to believe. I went to one for my first choice. Some are much better than others though and consider this option on a case by case basis based on your career goals.

Also: many programs are not "categorical," meaning you have to also match into a TY or prelim year. Diagnostic Radiology is a classic example of this.

I'm a computer science major and we're studying this algorithm currently in one of my classes. it's called "stable matching"

Koru Designs American medical pathway is longer than compared to asian or european pathways because in America u do pre med and in european or asian u directly go to a medical uni after high school its called bmbs or mbbs or 6 yr md course

@@sirisha7112 Not all asian countries is like that though. In my country, we also do pre-med. The 6 years med (7 years in my country) you are talking about is only for those who are really INTELLIGENT which is like in a 400 applications, only 40 would pass. If you can't pass that, then you have to go to pre-med and then medical school after.

Residency spots are funded by US taxpayers and it’s difficult for US citizens going to US medical schools, likely going on to practice in the US, to get spots. I know this post is 2 years old, but any foreign students should realize their chances at residency here are slim. Some foreign students do get accepted, but it’s ,rightfully, uncommon.

Omg thank you for clarifying that there was a switch in 1995 from program to applicant-proposing. I kept hearing people insist that it was one or the other, but it seems to have been both at different points in time

Thanks so much for this video! This is the most comprehensive explanation of residency matching that I have seen so far. I would definitely be interested in more videos from you about residency in general. It seems like (real) information on what to actually expect in residency (academically, professionally, and personally) is difficult to find. I have a question about the connection between the ERAS application and doing interviews at residency programs. Is the ERAS application like a medical school application where you select which schools/programs you want to inquire about, and so your application goes to them and they like you so they call you for an interview.... or are the ERAS applications just released into cyberspace and programs just randomly select students for interviews?

From personal experience reviewing resident applications, medical schools have very complex letters and reading them is like trying to figure out some sort of hieroglyphic map. And each school is different with the information that they send. And we get several thousand applicants and we only spend a minute or two on each application. Most of this time is not spent trying to figure out your class rank. So unless you’re in the top 10 of your class and this is very clearly stated in your Dean’s letter, which we also don’t really spend much time reading since you probably filled out a form telling them what to write about yourself anyway, I don’t really think it’s going to change much because frankly my friends and I are going to spend anymore time trying to decipher each schools different algorithm on where you compare to your classmates. That said, your step 2 score is going to be much much more important. And failing step one is probably going to look worse because it will be hard to see if you found it by just a little bit or a lot. Hope that helps!

Just to add, some TY positions DO rank applicants without an interview if they are being considered for the advanced position. However its not the norm and is program specific

So residency programs can see if you’ve ranked them? Is that why they might bump you up?

So does being on a division 1 sports team help get into med school at all? Obviously it would not make up for a bad GPA, but would it help me stand out? I have 18 hours of track practice a week. So I feel like because of that it would be extra impressive if I had a good GPA as well as being on a D1 team. Or do they not care about sports at all?

Just to elaborate, I read that it was becoming official on January 1, 2022, but I'm still curious on how it can affect outcome down the road.

How does that work with the new step 1 pass/fail system?

If I am deciding on multiple specialties, can I apply to multiple specialties or do I have to just stick to one? Just like applying to medical school, you have to use your stats to rank your school list right? Thanks for your answers.

Shivani Shastri technically you can, but it’s pretty rare to do that unless the specialties are very similar because you have to get completely separate LORs, write completely separate essays, go on different interviews, etc. It gets expensive.

Yepp, DO students will apply using ERAS the same as their MD counterparts.

You explained the reason for the match being started in the first place very well. However, I still don't understand why this is viewed as a "problem." In every other field that has graduate level education, students are offered jobs early. Why does medicine have to be so special?

why?

If I rank a program with 10 spots 1st. The algorithm will attempt to match me to that program. However if that program ranks me 12th, but 2 of the top 10 at that program have other programs ranked first, will I match to that program? Or, because I do not break their top 10, will the algorithm go ahead and scoot me to my number 2.

Now that USMLE Step 1 is pass fail as are grades at most medical schools, USMLE Step 2 is ever more important as a single deciding factor.

Apply to multiple med schools and "hopefully get several acceptances" holy crap those are some wildly high expectations, considering something like 60% of applicants get zero acceptances. 3+ acceptances is the sort of thing that only happens to the best of the best applicants.

Does this also apply for international medical graduates or is there anything different? And GREAT video Thank you.

If you're US-citizen IMG, there isn't much of a difference. If you're non-US citizen, you'll also need to apply for a visa, like J1 or H1B, which not all residency programs sponsor.

@@ahmadhumbal6129 I'm not a non-US citizen IMG so I'm not sure how to answer that fully. I highly recommend researching which programs do sponsor visas, like on Freida. Also check out ECFMG, the main program that takes care of IMG applicants.

Can someone answer this? With the 2020 residency merger, will D.Os still have to take the USMLE? or will the COMLEX suffice?

I interviewed at separate DO schools that said the EXACT opposite thing. 1. COMLEX gets converted to a USMLE score. 2. If you are gonna go for a competitive residency, they used neurosurgery as an example, "you bet your bottom dollar you're gonna have to take the USMLE."

Colin Henderson please please please take the usmle. Programs still do not understand the comlex scoring and will never rank someone with a 600 comlex over a 230 on usmle. If you want to be competitive at all, do not skimp out on usmle.

What if I do not want to match with a civilian residency program but intend to join the armed forces as a medical officer? Are armed forces residencies matched using the same system?

Hi sorry for the delay . Military medical students participate in a different syestem and their results are delivered in December instead of March . The military residency programs are not allowed for civilians . However military med students can apply for civilian residency programs if they don’t Mach in military resdences .

In order to be a medical officer you have two options . Opinion 1 is applying for the hpsp scholarship. The hpsp scholarship is a program where the navy , army or air force will pay for your medical education in any USA university and then commission you as a medical officer . During the 4 years you will receive litunent pay . You will pretty much have the same lifestyle as your civilian classmates until clinical rotations . During clinical rotations you will be doing rotations at military hospitals and civilian . During the match you will be going for interviews to military hospitals and ranking their programs . Option 2 going to the military medical school in Maryland .

I’m confused, when you select your rank list, are you listing programs for the specialty you want? Or, are you submitting different specialties with your top specialties higher on the list?

You can choose what specialities to apply for at different places. However, most apply to the specialty they want at different places with maybe a backup specialty also chosen at a couple places to try and prevent being unmatched if their chosen speciality is super competitive which increases their chances of going unmatched hence the purpose of a backup less competitive speciality.

Jesus Christ, and I thought software engineering interviews were crazy (so much there are books about how to crack the software engineer interview) But to have a whole match system...

Does this work the same for international students who attend med school in the US

the match system is fucking stupid!! I failed to match this year. It is actually the stupidest thing on earth and doesn't work in favor of students at all, but for the programs very much so!

Great videos! What about if you rank a program "Low" on your list and the program ranks you "High", but also other applicants rank that same program "High" and the program ranks them "lower" than you, would you still match there if you didn't match in the other higher ranked programs of your list ??

You work hard, score a standard deviation above the mean on the USMLE then get sent to Afghanistan after your first year then have no residency to come back to. Isn't that how everyone else's selection worked?
